They were talking in a modified version of the Lowlands/Central Belt dialect of the Scots Language. Scots is related to English, but is more Germanic and is understood and used to various extents by about 2 Million people. The other main dialect is Doric - spoken in the NE of Scotland. I cannot believe that many Americans can understand this.

  • @lmcgregoruk

I'm surprised at how much money gets spent on Gaelic, when Doric is spoken by far more people. Even if it is a dialect rather than a language. Last couple of times I looked, Gaelic was spoken by about 1% of the Scottish population, or around 20,000 people.

Redgren Grumbholdt extended into Caithness at one time. Going back just just eight centuries Glasgow was a Cumbric speaking village (inhabitants could have conversed up to a point with Welsh speaking Liverpuddlians) with Gaelic speakers North of the Clyde, and Scots speakers to the East.

For Scottish tv comedy I can only think of Limmy (early-mid 2000s abstract comedy), Still Game, an early-mid 2000s comedy on the lives of working class pensioners living in Glasgow high rise schemes (projects?) played by a younger cast, of which first 6 series are the better ones before it took a ten year break and changed format - and Rab C Nesbitt, an 1980s to 2000s comedy on the life of an alcoholic and his family, lol. The latter was the bigger hit out of the three, but I think the first 6 series of Still Game are the better option to try eventually as the main cast don't have strong accents. Your collectables reminded me of Red Dwarf as I used to have a few boxed collectable figures I received with RD autographed dvds, you might want to check that out (scifi comedy with a hint of trek). My favourite comedy UK wide is probably the League of Gentlemen, a horror-comedy from the 90s, as it was so different to anything else, lol.
