The Missoula Megafloods are quite unusual in that they permanently changed the landscape of a wide swath of Oregon, Washington State, Idaho, and Montana in a brief time period. Typically, erosion from water takes thousands or even tens of thousands of years to carve a fraction of what a single flood accomplished.

Could you look into the hypothesis that a comet impact in the Canadian ice sheet provided the water and energy to do this? There was an impact crater discovered there recently that may be a better explanation for the water source and the subsidence of the ice.

Today they *officially* started filling the big Dam. They openned the "Riacho Seco" valve. Water will take +- 6/7 days to arrive at the Dam. It'll travel +- 350km through natural river(bed)s (after the "Riacho Seco" valve). Remember water flows 24/7 in the system. Keep an eye here cause it changes everywhere.

Maybe, just maybe, if it can be learned in this situation what is possible in a brief period of time, maybe scientists will LOOK AGAIN at many other massive erosion sites and begin to let go of the never proven but always mentioned "takes thousands or even tens of thousands of years ..." -- Many canyons all over the world were likely created in this way. The idea of a blissful and peaceful earth changing incrementally over millions of years just isn't so.

@@pinetree2473 Tectonic processes are certainly that slow; but we're talking about a failing ice dam here. With that much water dammed up, dumping it all at once is bound to rip the landscape apart downstream -- which is what it did. I've driven through there several times and the enormity of these floods on the landscape you just can't wrap your head around. There are glacial erratics all over the Willamette Valley and here in Clark County even -- rafted downriver 300 or so miles only to land here, in the span of just a few days. Incredible.

Having lived in Eastern Washington for a long time and being a pilot, it is (like my physics instructor says) intuitively obvious to even the most casual observer the effects of the flood waters. I used to sit on the hills around Yakima, WA and marvel at HOW MUCH water must have been ripping through there to create the features. And now living 2 hours north of Missoula and traveling the area between there and the Oregon/Washington coast, the geology is really amazing. I fly up to Glacier National Park which I might recommend you focus on for a topic, since the towering geology is super impressive. Again, thank you for covering such awesome events.

Thanks for sharing! I’m glad that you were able to experience the beauty of this region yourself. The issue as to why these megafloods were not recognized until the 1960s relates to a now outdated school of thought which said “If a geologic event can’t be observed now, it never happened.” That of course is nonsensical, but caused the area to not be widely recognize until this thought process was abandoned

Moving to Washington state, I drove through Missoula. All through the trip along the Clark Fork River, I kept looking up at the sides of the hills and cliffs where there were horizontal water lines/stains way up their sides. I felt like I was at the bottom of an old bathtub and wondered where all that water had gone. When I got to Washington I could easily see where it had passed through! It’s all out in the Pacific now, having dug a trench into the sea floor for several miles by shear force of volume. 😳

I study geology, but in Germany. That's why I'm hearing about the Missoula Floods for the first time. I sat here with my mouth open upon seeing what nowadays remains from them. Spectacular. And thanks for making a video not related to volcanics, it's really refreshing. As a related topic to this video, I would like to suggest the Messinian Salinity Crisis and subsequent Zanclean Flood. The former led to the mediterranean sea completely evaporating about 6-5ma ago and depositing massive layers of evaporites. The latter then ended the MSC by reflooding the basin and scouring it in the process (though most of these erosion marks now are deep below sea leavel, of course).

Ohh yes. Look the floods on PBS Nova (I think). They had a good special on that. Should be on KZread. I lived in that area for 17 years. Had ancient basalt layers from ancient lava flows and our modern water table created by those old floods.

There are telltale "lines" on Mount Sentinel at the East edge of Missoula MT that show lake levels above the valley floor to this very day. It's insane that they are over 10,000 years old and still so prominent. You can easily see them from a couple miles away still.

"10 times the combined output of all the rivers on Earth." ... WOW. ... that's amazing.

One web site about the Missoula Lake floods says: "It is estimated that the maximum rate of flow was equal to 386 million cubic feet per second. At that rate, the lake probably drained in a few days. Water moving at speeds between 30 and 50 miles per hour..." The Mississippi River discharges about 600 thousand cubic feet per second, so the Missoula flood flow rate was estimated to be equal to about 650 Mississippi Rivers. That is simply unimaginable.

Yeah the glacial dam burst floods of the ice ages are not something we can really intuition and it took scientists a long time to finally recognize that yes these events really happened. The Missoula floods are perhaps the most famous since most of the damage done to the landscape is largely still visible and intact within the arid climate however they occurred elsewhere too often with similarly impressive carnage. Perhaps the best example of a major feature carved by glacial dam burst floods is the English Channel. Honestly I suspect that accounts of these kinds of glacial megafloods probably form the original basis for many of the various flood myth/legends that have been passed around. Obviously even if that is the case they have largely been highly contaminated by other stories and mythological interpretations well before the first written accounts.

There was a glacial dam burst in a Himalayan country not long ago. There are videos on youtube. Granted nowhere near as big as this, but it was still the biggest volume of rushing water I'd ever seen that wasn't a tsunami.

I recently did a project on the Missoula floods for one of my classes in college. I live in Idaho and the evidence of the floods is easy to see especially when viewing lidar/height maps. A less talked about lake is Glacial Lake Columbia which was once located over Spokane Washington and the Rathdrum Prairie in Idaho. This lake was here during some of the megafloods from Missoula which likely helped it flow out and over what is now the channel scablands. It amazes me how you can upload so many videos on all these different geologic topics so quickly, keep it up.

Oh yea, I lived near Spokane for 17 years. This was taught in Elementary, Junior High, High School, and Collage. The man who pointed this event was initially RIDICULED by the Geology community until satellite 🛰 imaging proved him right. Just Like how they were looking all over Yellowstone for a volcano……until a satellite showed the entire park was one giant Volcano. There was one of those “orphan” boulders not to far from my house in a farmers field. He just worked around it. To big to move!

In a similar vein, I'd like to see you analyze the history of Lake Bonneville in Utah and its eventual catastrophic release.

I just so happen to live in Gresham Oregon and drive along the Columbia almost every day. I try to picture a 500' + wall of water coming out of the gorge but can never wrap my head around it. You should look up Randle Carlson, He is huge into the floods and has a different take on how they happen.

Haha! I’m from there too. Randal Carlson has the real story here, or the beginnings of it. J Harlen Bretz, a geologist who dedicated his entire life and was at the forefront during the discovery of the aftermath of these floods, spent his life trying to find the real culprit for what we see in the landscape. He settled for the idea of jökulhlaups, or periodic floods bursting from glacial lakes, and was awarded the Nobel prize after decades in the field. He settled for this idea but knew that this wasn’t the full story. In reality, the only thing that can create what we see is the Ice Age’s North American glacial sheet spread over thousands of miles and 2 miles thick at its maximum, melting from a sudden event. Tens of millions of cubic feet of water flowing over the North American landscape some from unknown event. A solar flare? A comet? A meteor? We’re not totally sure. But I can tell you that the complicated history of our geologic understanding has swayed back and forth and cannot say for certain that was we see are merely thousands of years of breaking glacial lakes. The glacial erratics strewn across the landscape are far too large and much too far away from their source to be from anything short of a single, cataclysmic flood. There are certainly some erratics that can be explained by glacial lake breaks, but for the most part, the landscape does not show us a slowly building mystery. It shows us an enormous, unbelievable mystery (carbon spherules, nano-diamonds) that unfortunately, the mainstream is on the wrong side of as of now. It annoys me seeing these KZread videos from a bunch of basic people touting basic ideas, trying to fit a basic understanding of “glacial lakes” into the entirety of the northern landscape. They’re sell outs and they don’t do the extra thought and research that J Harlen Bretz did, they just accept their cute little glacial lakes theory for everything and call it good.

Those don’t happen due to one or two cataclysmic events, as Carlson suggests. I’d be interested to see what his thoughts were on these features. Everything else mentioned in this video can be debated to have been created by a massive flood due to a (small) asteroid impact on the glacier sheet.

@@seanmont8274 I totally hear you. I’m not dismissing glacial lakes and thousand of years of cyclical ice breaking and doing that over and over again. There are just lots of features that are either too far away or clearly feature magnitudes of water that hurt your brain if you don’t account for an entire continent worth of glaciers melting all at once. That doesn’t dismiss glacial lakes for everything, just some things. Definitely not an expert but I’ve seen a lot of the landscape and read a lot about this so I’m just trying to fit everything in my mind and don’t ask anyone to change their opinions. The research definitely isn’t complete here and there’s more dots we need to connect or at least that I need to.

And this, folks, is why the National Weather Service urges you to take flash flooding so seriously. Water can do SO much damage in such a short timespan. It is the most powerful erosive force on earth. And it takes shockingly little of it to sweep your vehicle away. A foot of water can stall your engine. Two feet can float your vehicle. Even less than that can undermine the road and cause it to collapse below you. Turn around; don't drown!

@@ihatecandy02 This is far fetched. There's so much in this comment I'm not going to try and debunk this. The mud flood reset for example. Um. If that mud flood reset civilization just 200 years ago, how did we do that in under 200 years? How did the population go from basically nothing to nearly 8 billion in under 200 years? How did we go from no technology to what we have today in under 200 years? That mud flood wiped out civilization. Right? So how did civilization go from nothing, to today in under 200 years? There are so many holes in that idea that the Titanic could have gone through and still have miles of space at the narrowest point.

This mega event is explained with tremendous brevity because of the simple and clear narrative accompanied by the simultaneous footage of the landscape and geological landmarks.

I live in the Walla Walla valley where temporary Lake Lewis backed up from the restriction at Wallula Gap. Just two miles west of our farm is the what's known locally as the Little Grand Canyon which formed when, back in the day a siphon pipe burst on an irrigation ditch. There was no way to turn off about eight miles of fully charged ditch so it washed out a very deep ravine, revealing the 40 deposited layers mentioned in the video. Long since repaired, we still divert irrigation water from this canal that flows by the washout. It's private land and posted now but my mother got the opportunity to see it up close years ago. I grow organic crops on those Lake Missoula deposits which includes removing a few dozen erratics from our fields every year. These are non-native rocks ranging from fist to football sized but some are larger!... As a matter of fact while plowing, I found and interesting one just last week that is sedimentary with several layers sandwiched together which I gave to my mother to line another flowerbed. Most are granite I believe. So much has changed since the floods, but the evidence remains! Thanks for sharing a great story that is truly close to home!

I live in North Idaho near Lake Pend Orielle, a remnant of the great Missoula Floods. Where the Clark Fork River (not Fork Clark like the video says) empties into the lake, and for many miles upstream, you can clearly see the layers on the canyon walls from the lake levels as the ice built up, and broke away. It is amazing that large boulders from this area (called Erratics) can be found all the way to the WA and OR coastlines.

I am surprised ... no volcano today ... but a very interesting topic, because of me being a retired meteorologist and climatologist. I often think that people (and governments) should look at boulders more carefully and think about what force was able to move them into the places where they are now, to be prepared what catastrophic events might be possible. When I saw some boulders in tiny valleys with little creeks, I thought how these creeks can be able to move these, especially when after a more or less normal flooding they remained in place. We just experienced a flood of 100 or even 200 year frequency here in western Germany and Belgium in July 2021. And after experiencing that, I am sure, that valleys are not formed by the normal small rivers and creeks that run in those, but in single rare catastrophic events. Especially when we had 2 meters of flood here in parts of the city in one day in July, when there had been almost no creek in the city since I moved here 9 years ago. That had been only rainfall, and these megafloods you show, had been caused by periodically forming and breaking ice dams. I had my geology education in north east New York, and we have a smaller but similar set of events during the Younger-Dryas glaciation event. Glacial Lake Iroquois, which encompassed modern Lake Ontario and the surrounding lowlands, had two massive "break out" floods. The first one dramatically reduced the sizes of both Lake Iroquois and Glacial Lake Vermont (centered where modern day Lake Champlain and its lowlands are) to their Frontinac and Fort Ann phases, and broke the dam that held back Glacial Lake Albany, leaving the modern day Hudson River Valley. The second breakout flood reduced both Lake Iroquois and Lake Vermont close to the size of their modern day counterparts, but were inundated with seawater after the Laurentide Ice Sheet retreated past the mouth of the Saint Lawrence Seaway. The Champlain Sea phase is why Vermont's state fossil is the Beluga whale.

@@swirvinbirds1971 I had a professor in college that was a proponent of a theory that if it was not the cause of the Younger Dryas, the first Lake Iroquois breakout flood contributed to beginning of it. Therefore I misspoke. Technically it was at the end of the Bolling-Allerod, but I felt its potential connection to Younger-Dryas was more important as it did happen on the cusp of the two events.

As far as all the world being unified at one time, it's tough to even get people to agree in my neighborhood, never mind the world. If this is what you believe, that's cool. I had a job fixing remote weather stations for a couple years in the channeled scablands. I drove all over that area. In the spring some of the smaller coulees are beautiful. Cool area to check out

Make a real effort to not mention other KZread channels but this is fascinating geology. Dr. Nick Zentner has a class on this and specialty is the area. Back then it was a much different place. A least one glacier calving into the lake in what is now Salt Lake Valley.

Nicely done, to give an idea to those who haven't gone in depth with this topic, the flood water got as far south on the Willamette River that it reached Eugene Oregon, that's about 100 miles south of the Columbia River, pretty impressive floods, and it happened several times.

I read the book on this and I looked at the landscape of the area a entire different way since. When flying overhead it blows my mind how massive this flood was. CWA

I first heard about these floods at the end of the ice age (and I can't remember something like younger dryas? It was a cold spell in between two warmer periods) On Joe Rogan of all places lol, it was a geologist named randall Carlson, I never looked into prehistory or geology much until last year but this period with the obvious climatic and geographic changes and the mega fauna extinctions is now fascinating to me, I can't imagine how the ancient people in the area might have felt when they saw such a massive flood...

Fascinating.. When looking at Google maps, I see these ripple formations caused by water almost everywhere that is not developed, mountain or forest.

I've long been interested in this subject since I first heard about it while working as a wildfire crew member in Washington State back in the 70s when the concept was just becoming accepted. Earlier this week I listened to a Joe Rogan podcast with catastrophist Randall Carlson who spent considerable time describing this in relationship to theories that revolve around asteroid impacts at the end of the Pleistocene and early Holocene. I'm curious as to just what the environment would have been along the southern edge of the cordilleran and laurentide ice sheet. I know that we sometimes portray using modern imagery from Greenland or Antarctica though I suspect this wouldn't be quite correct since it would fail to address the vast amounts of glacial debris and the relatively warm and sunny climate at those latitudes which I suspect would have made the southern edge a distinctive kind of depositional zone including huge dust storms to create the loess covered regions in both Eurasia and North America and with abundance of water and soil and therefore abundant life; all of which would have been catastrophically washed away as the breakout floods, regardless of whether they were simple glacial dams being periodically broken or the result of meteoric impacts.

In part, yes. The amount of water channeling thru the Columbia River Gorge certainly enlarged the channel by ripping out even more bedrock. The widening of the channel left steep banks and cliffs on both N and S banks. Multnomah is one of those cliffs…

Eastern Washington is full of fascinating geology (although unfortunately the minerals are rather lackluster). The Columbia river gorge is a good place to view all sorts of stuff relating to the Missoula floods and Columbia flood basalts as well. However the area between the Okanagan highlands and the Cascades also has some fun stuff to offer in that regard. The drive across the Cascades to Wenatchee is quite scenic.

I recently got curious about ancient floods and now here you are with a video on them haha. Would be cool to see one on the lake bonneville flood, one of the leading hypothesis' is that an earthquake hit the Wasatch front and caused a landslide in Salt Lake City area and further caused a tsunami that breached a natural dam in Idaho and caused the lake to drain north and through the Columbia some 20,000 years ago as well. That river cant catch a break it seems.

Geology keeps fascinating me, thank U for another awesome video!

For your 40 floods, you are going to have to explain how the dam was rebuilt each time, and how large it was to hold back the intense pressure from all of that water behind it. An ice lobe doesn't just magically reappear, it has to be built up every winter, and not be destroyed by the summer melt. You would have to date your sediment layers first, to make sure they are all under 15k years old.

Thanks for doing more videos on geological features other than volcanoes. This is one of the topics I hoped for a video on the most. Would you mind covering the Hudson Palisades next? I visited them recently and my family and I thought they were very beautiful. It is mind blowing that these 500 foot tall cliffs are made entirely of magma and once marked where North America split apart from Africa.

@@miguellopez3392I've listened to Nick Zetner and Randal Carson. Nick Zetner parrots the standard conventional geology accepted narrative. Conventional geologists are the same ones that destroyed the carrier of J Harlen's Bretz when he first proposed that a huge flood reshaped eastern Washington, which is now accepted as a fact. Randal Carson by rational thinking has actually found severe faults with the current conventional geology narrative of the Missoula floods.

These thaw floods that happened, not only the one reported, but as well as others, were quite impressive. great video. Unfortunately I know a lot about the glaciation in the north of the globe, but I know nothing about what happened in the southern hemisphere, almost nothing is ever said.

The main reason we don't talk about southern hemisphere glaciation is that glaciers generally need land to be stable (glaciers crumble when they hit the coast as wave action is an unstable foundation), and the southern hemisphere has very little land for glaciers to expand onto. The only place where they left Antarctica alwas the southern bit of South America where the ice mainly extended into the mountains. In contrast North America, Scandinavia, and Russia were all perfect for large glaciers to build up miles thick on and expand across. Additionally, if glaciers/icesheets did grow out conciderablely from Antarctica the evidence of ice floating on deep water is a lot harder to find compared to the obvious scars of these floods, the great and finger lakes, and countless moraines including long island, dogger bank, and grand banks.

I think only New Zealand and perhaps parts of patagonia was glaciated. Maybe the Andes had some too? If they did, you could do a quick youtube search and see what is out there.

Yeah, and the geologist that first proposed it based on the waterfall site was called a crackpot and his flood theory was denied for over 20 years. Ultimately another geologist came along and said he was wrong, the floods occurred repeatedly, not just once. Retired by that time, he was finally given a prestigious geology award for his work. I might have remembered it wrong, he might have been called a crackpot for almost 30 years.

Lived in Missoula for a bit and it's impressive you can still see the evidence of this lake and this event there

After the first time I saw the Grand canyon, I thought of the Missoula floods and thought a few floods like that probably went through there and helped the Colorado river carve that.

Enjoyed your video, very quick synopsis of this flooding. I liked the top down view of most of your images. I look at this from a climatology view point. So, in a span of 15,000 years as we were exiting an ice age, the glaciers had a come back 40 times? Was the scenario the same each time? A glacial blockage over the river that drained the Missoula area?

The boneville flood is another. Also, these floods weren’t singular events. They happened over and over again as glaciers extended and retreated during the last ice age.

Wow, I had never heard or read of this before. Remarkable.

I live in Corvallis, Oregon. In the heart of the Willamette Valley and its crazy to learn the history that this area was covered in water all over this valley making only small islands. It's facinating to me. It's what makes certain areas of Oregon so hard to gold mine, because in some places there is 100+ft of overburdened soil above the bedrock gold bearing layers.

As soon as time travel holidays are a thing I want to go back to see one of these catastrophic floods (from a distance).

The closest I have is a video on the Uinkaret volcanic field which is partially in the Grand Canyon :). I’ll make an eventual video on the Grand Canyon

Those sediment deposits are going to be the next gold rush

I've spent a lot of time in Moses Coulee near Wenatchee Wa where a lot of the water dumped out into the Columbia. A few years back a local geologist identified a large Boulder on the east Wenatchee bench as being from the Missoula area. Dry falls and the lake lenore caves are also very interesting.

The biggest flood was thought to be between 22ka and 18 ka ...when the okanagan lobe wasnt present it took a northern outlet route.And you cannot mention these floods and miss the 1time Bonneville flood......intersesting stuff tho ty
