THIS STORY:
Her name was Julia Georgiana Seabrook. She grew up at the nearby Seabrook Plantation. Julia was the daughter of Captain William Seabrook, one of the richest cotton plantation owners around these parts of South Carolina.
While visiting family, Julia would contract the dreaded disease - diphtheria. When it appeared that she had finally passed on, as common in those days, there would be a immediate ceremony in the parlor, and then immediate internment. In this case, Julia was put into the family crypt, in the mausoleum. But all this time, she was not dead. She was actually just in a comatose state. They put her in and close the vault and locked the outer door. And and no one would soon enter after that.
Two years later, they would come back. And there they would witness a horrific scene.
THIS CHANNEL:
_________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

The fear of being buried alive gave rise to the saying ' dead ringers ' . The deceased was buried with a string in his/ her hand that led to the surface and was attached to a bell ...just in case ! It leads me to believe that mistakes were made more often than one would think .

Excellent retelling. I could almost feel what you felt inside the crypt believing where they found her lying. Her child predeceased the husband, so the poor man must have been completely bereaved to not only bury his young child but having to rebury his wife now knowing the pure horror she experienced in her real death. Mesmerizing and worthy of a Vincent Price, Edgar Allan Poe film.

Was my great uncle ,told me that when he was a boy in 1885 , at 8 y.o. , and there was a death in the family . With no embalming done , that the coffin placed inside the house with coal oil lamp lit . All the family sat up day and night to see if the death was real ? After about 3 or 4 days . Real signs of death was visible . Then the family took the coffin to the cemetery. In very rear cases the dead would wake , in the coffin and hopefully be reunited with loved ones !!! Meny simple folks took care or their own dead , buy ,or build their own coffins ahead of times to die !! Death was not spooky at all but still a time of sorrow ! I'm now 75 , telling you ,what was told to me as a boy in 1953 !!

George Washington feared being buried while alive so he made the stipulation in his last requests, or will, that he not be buried until he had been dead for four days. Also, this is a tragic story but at least she was able to get out of her coffin, unlike others being buried underground while still alive. Yikes, the stuff of nightmares.

Every time I hear of someone being buried alive it gives me the willies. I think a long time ago I posted about the story my grandpa said his grandfather told him about being a caretaker of a cemetery in the late 1800s in Germany. It was winter and they just had a cold snap and he was doing his rounds and he heard faint screaming coming from a grave of a young woman just buried, realizing she was buried alive he ran to the shed to get tools to start digging. But then he realized the ground was frozen and by the time he would get to her she would have already died of suffocation and it would be horrible to dig her up, tell her family she was buried alive only to end up dying anyway from suffocation. He thought knowing that would be more horrible for the parents then just thinking their daughter was already dead. So he put his tools away, went inside, made himself something to drink and cried all night knowing she was buried alive and he had to leave her there cause either way she would die of suffocation so there was no point in digging her up. That always traumatized me as a kid hearing that and my biggest fear for a long time was being buried alive in a box.

Strange story. She could not have been buried a long time because she was not able to survive very long.. so how was it the ground was frozen in such a short time? If they just buried her it was not frozen. If she was buried for a while how could she have survived. I doubt that the story is true

  • @lisatheboywonder6744

@@stephaniegilcher4577 I said in my story that they had a cold snap the night before so the ground ended up freezing. So my guess she was buried the day before and if she was comatose or whatever the entire time her breathing would be shallow/almost non existent cause they did think she was dead so she wasn't taking up air and there's variables depending on what scientists you ask, you can survive anywhere between 5 hours after 'waking up' or 24 hours. So it's possible she was buried the day before and when my great great grandpa was doing his rounds she just 'woke up' and that's when he heard her and this was in Europe where it is colder and their cold snaps are brutal so the ground can freeze pretty bad even if it was only frozen a foot down with victorian era digging tools it would have taken forever to even get a foot down into frozen ground.i never met my great great grandpa so I cant ask but from what I was told of him he was a very no nonsense man who didn't mince words and my grandpa said wasn't the kind to ' tell stories ' cause my grandpa was the same way and my grandpa believes it could have happened and If HE of all people believed it, I'm kinda inclined to believe it. But I have wondered myself over the years and I thought about it a lot like you the circumstances and conditions and did a million Google searches because it just weirded me out for years I felt like I ' had' to know if it was possible cause it was so creepy. My stance is inconclusive I read that it could be possible but still I don't like to think it happened cause it's just so damn creepy.

@@stephaniegilcher4577 I don't know where in Germany cause unfortunately my grandfather passed in 2008. So I can't ask and it's possible especially if she was only buried the day prior. She would only suffocate after she woke up and realized she was buried alive and used up all her oxygen. Apparently it was super common in that era to be buried alive which is creepy and there are stories of people being dug up and rescued after being buried for a day or two so who knows. I read up so much on being buried alive cause for years it scared me cause it was a legit fear until I was in my late twenties cause for some reason my grandpa decided to nonchalantly tell a bunch of 7 and 9 year olds how his grandpa left a girl buried alive in a cemetery. But this is the same country that read their kids struwwelpeter....so yeah. I hope it wasn't true cause it legit disturbed me to the point of it being a obsessive phobia. I mostly gotten over it but it still gives me the willies.

Poor poor woman 😔 how horrendous! So many stories I have heard ( a good few from you) about how many ' died' and were buried alive in those days. Horrific! I'm a recent sub of yours from the UK. I am so so glad I found your channel. I literally listened to all the play lists over 5 days! I pottered about with my ear pods in and listened to your stories and would stop and watch parts I could then save and revisit them to see the bits I had missed visually lol. The beauty about your videos is the fact that you almost combine a history podcast with a broadcast. You tell the stories so vividly, colourfully and calmly that we take it all in then we have the luxury of the visual of you being there and the links and pics you put in. I have learnt so much history from your channel. You've visited places I can only imagine being in my lifetime. I almost had anxiety when I was getting to the end of the last playlist and would then have to wait for uploads! 😂. Also I found your channel at a very stressful time in my life and your stories and voice brought a calming feeling for me and was able to relax alot listening and learning and being kept intrigued. So thankyou so so much for finding a passion of yours as well as a gift of story telling and sharing with the world. Also for keeping alive the legacy of so many people that so many of us wouldn't know about. So many you have spoken about deserve to be remembered and honoured. Your respect especially with the vets etc is admirable. Also the missing or broken head stone work you do with the charity is wonderful. Thankyou again and good luck for all your forthcoming trips and we all can't wait! Love and appreciation from Across the Pond ❤️

Wow, it’s so rare that we get such a good look at the inside of one of these things! How sad. First off, none of them lived to even be 40 years old. A whole little family, just gone. Julia’s story is absolutely horrific and the stuff of nightmares, but I’m just a bit apprehensive to fully believe that absolutely no one heard her?? No other cemetery visitors? And no one in her family came to visit her in the days following her burial? I’m sure it’s entirely possible; I don’t know, maybe my mind just doesn’t want to believe it haha.

I had a great grandfather that was thought to be dead and woke up during the wake. It's written about in some old family bibles and has been passed down. I understand it scared the crap out of everyone present. He lived for 6 more months before passing. He was very lucky 🍀. This was in south Carolina.

Wow. That would have been horrendous. With her having been sick for a few days before they declared her dead, she had to of been weak and that last big effort to break out of the casket and vault might have taken about all the life she had left. I really hope so...I hope she lay down in that corner to rest from her efforts, and this time, death did claim her, and she didn't suffer anymore. What a story!

Thanks Ron for the story of Julia Legare. Only one can imagine what her thoughts were at the time? To be enclosed in her coffin, waking up, and she finds herself trapped with no way out. A sad, but chilling story. Thanks Ron.

Wow so sad!! I'm sure her husband felt so bad. I wonder why he passed away so soon also, after? Her son 2yrs after and her husband 4 yrs after. The first time i saw that door opened after they found her i would've torn down the cript down and make a nice open aired burial memorial garden❤️ so she would be outdoors forever

I don't believe I'm wrong when I write that we were all and perhaps remain thoroughly creeped out by this story, and Don's telling us particularly chilling as he was in the mausoleum. I actually got up as I felt a moment of panic which thankfully passed away quickly, whereas I did not. Thank you so much for remebering this lady and her lost battle. Indeed, thanks for remembering them all with respect, and when applicable, kindness. You are a fine ethnographer, sir. Best regards always!

What a lovely old southern cemetery. South Carolina, especially Charleston, has so many stories, history, and beautiful architecture. I think Julie, her husband, and the child died within six years?

This is so heartbreaking, listening to this part of history and how this woman must have suffered and then how her family finding her in a pile in a corner must have added to their feelings of loss and grief all over again, must have been so very sad. I can not imagine the amount of heartache and suffering everybody had to deal with. Thank you for telling us about the history behind this lady's passing away, she certainly deserves to be remembered.

😲 wow what an awesome story. A sad, heartbreaking, unfortunate story. Ron you are the best when it comes to telling these stories. I honestly feel like I was there and seen it, I could almost smell the musty dirt smell it has. Thank you for always bringing me to these awesome places with you. I live in Pueblo Colorado and here lived a family by the last name of Thatcher, I have always wondered what secrets that family had. If you have a chance look up Rosemount Museum in Pueblo Colorado. 😊
