One thing I only just realised too, is how the magazine referred to it as "Bully" instead of Canis Canem Edit, which, by the time the magazine published the article, Bully was re-named over here in the previous month. Could maybe hint the demo is from August, they visited Rockstar's studios in September, either before, or just after the name change, and they weren't allowed to publish the preview until October.

sounds like the russell fight initially took place in the empty pool by the description. either that or the initial setup was skipped or replaced with just a note (hence no help gary) and the player simply didn't recognise the hole. fascinating story though, it's a shame the build will likely never surface.

I'm tired of all this, I hope that one day everything about the bully beta will leak, seeing those screenshots from the magazine catches my attention so much to see what the game was like for sure much cooler than the end

The gta liberty city stories and other rockstar games have demos on mobile. It lets you only play for an hour and then asks you to pay for the full game.

Just noticed that in the magazine description of "Defend Bucky" there is no mention of the skateboard, only saying you earn "more respect from the nerds"

technically every game has a demo build. in V, RDR2 and such are "magdemo" references. and IV TLAD debug scripts have a option to trigger the "demo" menu. but obviously doesn´t work. and Max Payne 3 even has different checkpoints.xml files called "checkpoints_demo.xml which show what part of the level they would have had in the demo and which not. only specific sections are in there

Wonder if "magdemo" stands for "Magazine demo", at least in Bully's case, only certain gaming magazines were allowed to see it.

@@TheNathanNS i believe it does. same was with RDR2 and V that magazines got to see a demo and described it. like in Vs case magazines described how they saw a switch to Michael getting up from his sun lounger. and in the files that switch`s audio iirc has magdemo as a prefix. in RDR2 are also similar ones, like arthur sitting on a ledge. but magazines aren´t allowed to play themselve anymore, they get to see it being played by a dev. in those cases i think it stands for "magazine demonstation"

Related, but I vaguely remember a gaming outlet (IGN?) who did a piece on RDR2 way before release, and they were shown footage and mentioned about the horse "appearing out of nowhere" and i think something about falling through the floor(?) when it was called and the devs told them they were working on fixing it.

the beta missions can be recreated with mods with the beta russell in the hole

Wow seeing those demo disks reminded me of when I was playing this demo disk with Sly Cooper and Tony Hawk. I was so broke all I would do it play those over and over again. Good times!

I believe it's something Rockstar wouldn't bother to release, similar case is how WWE has a library of every episode and every event shown, including the infamous death of Owen Hart, which the only high quality copy of the incident exists hidden in their HQ where instructions are put in place to prevent people from duplicating, seeing, or leaking the footage, however in Rockstar's case, it's likely the Bully demo is something they don't care about because it's not lucrative for them.

Rockstar have never bothered with demos as far as I can tell, they only usually let a very select few people see their games before release. So I don't think it's about not releasing because it's not lucrative, but just sticking to what they usually do.

@@digiorno912 it was in the early days (i know clice rigt) but i remember the defender of te castle being on a different location (possibly te same area but a higher hill in a zigzag rom leading to the bottom) i also remember being able to give flowers to Algernon (maybe a ref to the book????) the interesting part is that this would have been a UK old version maybe or potentially a cracked CD we used to get in the junk mail back in the UK early 2000s

I think this demo build might actually be Just a normal game with limitations, to our huge disappointment. But seriously. It was probably a rushed job. They took the existing build from that time, wrote a few Lines of Code to limit the missions testers could play, and that was about it... Although it could contain some deleted stuff that could be recreated, its existence is as plausible as an existence of a full game build from that period. Seeing as the article contains screenshots provided by Rockstar, instead of making their own, and all you get is a description of a few missions, this was probably Just a short meeting, when they played for an hour or two, and had to get back to write an article, with provided media. Yes. Its Just my theory backed up by nothing

From the other research I did, you're not wrong about writing an article with the media they were provided, pretty much all the screenshots can be easily found online, to me the article seems like it's a bit of mix between writing what they saw and played, and writing about what Rockstar told them, stuff like assuming boxing is a part of gym and the graffiti cleaning detention sounds a lot like it was information they were given in some document instead of seeing it for themselves. With the parts I am certain they played, there's barely any mentions of anything to do for side content, like there's no mentions of activities, customization or the rest of the map, which sounds like an average demo experience. To me, it sounds quite similar to the Saints Row one, very limited map, tiny selection of missions and barely any side content.
