Bull Elephant in Musth ready to mate and a little grumpy and tired

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Our first morning at the Hiuhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve in South Africa,
we saw this Bull elephant twice. The first time he went into the brush and came out the other side later that morning. The wetness on his cheeks is from the musk, an oily substance that only once a year is secreted and attracts females. His glands are inflamed, the temples swollen and his temperament and behavior undergo a remarkable change. This makes him nervy, excitable and unpredictable. After shaking the tree for breakfast he showed us that he was the king of the jungle that day. Watch as he comes at us, and starts to carry his trunk in his tusks. I think he did not like the little white car in front of us. An 11 minute video but I think you will like it. August 12, 2015. Gate One Tour.

He is not putting his trunk over his tusks because it's heavy..that is a sign he is very upset . He is warning big time Leave! Yet they laugh and taunt him. Very dangerous and disrespectful towards these amazing creatures.

Elephant was NOT ‘in musth’. Secretions from temporal gland might be because of thirst, hungry, tooth ache or some other minor irritant, and possibly his frustration was due to the fruit at top of tree being out of reach and he could not get them to fall. Your Guide would not be so stupid as to take you that close, had he been ‘in musth’. One or several people would have been killed - there were 4 vehicles there, and all 4 knew you were safe.

The huberous, disrespect & arrogance of all of these people in the presence of this magnificent bull cannot be overstated. Take pics & leave the animals in peace. Elephants already endure enough abuse by human beings. Frankly, it's amazing they don't attack every vehicle & kill every human being they see. It"s obvious this bull is irritated & fed up with the human beings present. The trunk being rested on the risks is a sign of irritation, not because it's heavy. Elephants lay their trunks on the ground to listen. They also listen through their feet. They listen for every sound but mainly for infra sound in several ways. The guides here are very irresponsible & showing little regard for the well being of the elephant. Regardless of the fees people pay to see them in the wild, they don't wish to see elephants harassed in this way. By pressing the time this elephant was willing to do oleratw the presence of people in vehicles, the guides endangered the customers. They also induced the elephant to show aggressive behaviour by chasing the vehicles, which is exactly the wrong thing to do, as elephants are very intelligent & this bull will not forget that he backed down vehicles when he's really in musth & extremely unpredictable & dangerous. Incredibly, an elephant is very fast. Faster than people realize. This bull could be on the vehicles & take out every person in them in no time, if he were truly in musth & agitated. This bull isn't in musth or not deeply. Thus his long tolerance. Lucky people he wasn't in full musth, if at all. There was no evidence he's in musth. No dripping, constant dribbling of urine or violent behaviour like a bull in musth normally displays. Just a bad show by the guides all around.

Norma Trimble these elephants have daily encounters with the tourists who are with guides. Most likely the little white car irritated him, not the usual voices that are part of his day and not a female which is what he was really looking for. There is no abuse going on. The money the tourists bring in is what supports his sanctuary. The guides know what they are doing, the folks in the white car obviously did not.

Norma Trimble these tourists at least are adding 💰 into the local economy there in South Africa. The elephant is more importantly encountering humans who would rather see him alive in his element than dead with his ivory being sold in China.

@ Kathryn M The sanctuary does need the tourist. How do you think they pay for guards that provide protection from poachers, veterinariay services and medicine. There are administrative expenses as well. The sanctuary exist because there are people working for the betterment all the animals living there. The African government cannot and does not pay for everything. Therefore we do need Tourist.

Elephant was NOT ‘in musth, ready to mate nor grumpy. Why you make this stiff up is beyond me. The condition known as ‘musth’ is incredibly easy to detect, so any Guide going within 100 yds of an Elephant ‘in musth’ is an Idiot and should be placed on ‘Suicide Watch’. Perfectly calm, chilled, relaxed and peckish, so feeding on the fruit or nuts that he could shake down from the tree. The Guide probably reversed because he thought you would freak out at him walking past. Not necessary. Pull over and give him space to pass. Job done.

If these people did NOT “trespass the animals Kingdom”, as you put it, the land would be deemed to have little (or even - no) value as it is and it would be levelled, ALL the Wildlife would be slaughtered, and it would become farmland. Which did you think is better - Tourists or Empty fields.

Learning about wild creatures is called enlightenment but in reality how would these people react in being treated in the same way...they deserve all that may happen to them but in the end it would be the exploited animal that would suffer again.
