I’m a 2nd year analyst at a top 5 Commercial Bank working within a specialized lending group for private-equity backed SaaS and tech-enabled services companies. Would I be competitive for a software/tech services M&A analyst role? Assumed yes for middle market shops but what about BB/EB too?

Can you tell about the advisory departments of Big4 firms? They also deal with M&A, and other staff which is similar to IBs. Can you tell more about the difference and similarities between them?

Yes, they're a great feeder into BB and EBs. Tend to work on smaller deals, get paid less, and have worse exit opps. Still great jobs where you pick up important skills, just don't have the same cachet.

I've heard bulge bracket bankers have more products to sell to clients, so it's easier to move up. How does that factor play into upward mobility vs boutiques? Great video as always Matt!

I think on a relative basis it's still harder to move up. There might be a few more products, but the bulge brackets are all significantly older firms and they generally all have huge gluts at the mid-level. From my perspective you can generally grind your way up to VP, but it's materially harder jumping to MD or partner at the bulge brackets.

UBS is a bulge bracket bank. They hold the most amount of private wealth. 2:1.

UBS is top BB in APAC region

I had MBA summer associate offers from Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan and a Superday invite from Goldman. Ended up signing with Morgan Stanley because of the flexibility of its generalist platform (NYC)

Is Wells Fargo an investment bank? Is it good place for junior analyst?

Yes, Wells Fargo does have a corporate / investment banking divisions, but I think it's generally been quite small. I would prefer a traditional investment bank over it, but Wells Fargo is still preferable to a Big 4 or boutique.

MBB is significantly better but I've seen people from Deloitte financial advisory services break into private equity. Just check the track record of your group to see what's possible.
