Built to Break: Nairobi's Collapsing Buildings

Kenya is enjoying a moment of relative calm. But, for how long? Every once in a while, the country is nudged back to the reality of the dangers posed by numerous residential blocks in urban centres, the most affected being the capital, Nairobi. In the third episode of #UncensoredMtaani, we shed a light on the ticking time bomb that is the country's apparent ill-planned urban centres and dubious structure approvals.

Unfortunately, the media fails to interview an engineer when his expert opinion is needed. Whenever a structure collapses, it is not solely the government's fault. The contractors/developers are the actual culprits. They should depend on safely designed structures, and this is to be done by an engineer! But more critical is the lack of appreciation for engineering services by the contractor/developers and now the media.

it is the govt fault because they are the ones, with govt engineers, who look up the construction plans and inspect the final building for approval. but they'd rather accept a bahasha

@@michaelheery7427 most of these building are not done by qualified engineers. The developer or client does not want cost, so they look for cheap guys like diploma ones to design for them, who have no experience or ample knowledge. or they use experienced fundis who have never stepped into any building engineering class to build the houses. government the approval issuer and enforcer of the regulations is very corrupt and does not ensure appropriate drawings and all pre-requisites are available before commencement of the construction. it is a corrupt nation with people in love of short cuts, while we qualified engineers are bypassed, struggling out here for jobs.

There are no innovative ideas to solve problems like these. Singapore solved its housing crisis in the 1960s when it was still 3rd world country and now has the highest house ownership on the planet. The solutions to the corruption, poverty, death, illiteracy e.t.c are there but I am 100% certain that if someone tried to solve them, these same "victims" would fight them tooth and nail.

I hope that we shall find the will to bring down all the buildings that haven't met the required standards in Nairobi. Growing up in Nai in the 80's one would admire the order that was there back then. Places like Donholm, Umoja, Dandora and Huruma had so much order that couldn't be rivalled by any other city in East Africa. Sadly, times have changed and these once fancy estates have transformed into concrete dens that have no plan whatsoever and owners of these houses are powerful cartels that care for nothing but money. The Moi government blessed the sale of NCC houses and not even Kibaki addressed this thorny issue. Innocent Kenyans are dying coz they've got no where else to live...after all, someone has approved these buildings to be safe for human habitation. The only solution is to bring down all these buildings and stick to the original plan of Nairobi...woe unto us the day when we shall have an earth tremor (not an earth quake) in Nairobi coz 80% of residential buildings will be brought down. Thanks Allan Namu for posting this.

As a professional in the construction sector, and Kenya having a housing deficit, the Ministry of Public works in collaboration with the counties need to work on bringing down the cost of construction approvals which many developers evade. this high costs dissuade developers from following procedure, and when a building collapses, the same government and counties has to spend on rescue efforts and hospital bills, even with bad publicity

Kenya, Kenya, Kenya. Sure our elected leaders and government officials truly don’t care for us. If only these guys(the so called land makachietha) had to pay heavily for the lives lost, to where they were totally out business never to recover again, and on top of it, jail time. Then and only then will these money hungry, good for nothing landlords learn their lessons. Na ujinga jameni, why waste material on so many floors only to loose the building later, and be a murderer too, having taken that many lives. Build low, with strong foundation and permanent! And Kenyans, let’s stop being ignorant! We’ve all seen these and learnt our lesson. Many living in these buildings seem to have enough education to stop entertaining such nonsense!!!
