Built by Silkworms | Neri Oxman's "Silk Pavilion II" | ARTIST STORIES

What might constitute sustainable construction methods for the future? Can humans collaborate with other species in the design and construction of objects and buildings, bringing us closer to the exquisite circularity of nature? These were some of the questions that architect and MIT professor Neri Oxman and The Mediated Matter Group sought to answer with the development of "Silk Pavilion II," a silk structure that was produced over the course of ten days through a combination of digital (a computer-controlled robotic arm) and biological (17,000 silkworms) fabrication.
Neri Oxman and Paola Antonelli, senior curator in MoMA's Department of Architecture and Design, guide the installation of "Silk Pavilion II" in the galleries at The Museum of Modern Art as part of the exhibition "Neri Oxman-Material Ecology."

How far is the human imagination? It seems to be trying to go from what is seen to what is invisible. Challenges, as far as attempts go, even beyond...

Its too weak to become a building, maybe only some shading in a hot climate. it, cannot be a roof for a building in damp wet countries, due to water ingress
