Building Your Own Animated Face - ARCHIVED (Adobe Character Animator Tutorial)

This 30-minute tutorial is meant for beginners to Adobe Photoshop and/or Character Animator. No drawing skills necessary - we'll just be using simple shapes. I'll slowly walk through the process of making an animated face, explaining each tool along the way. If you follow along, by the end you should have a working puppet of your own to serve as a foundation for your own animated creations.

    Hi Dave! Thanks for the great tutorials. I started playing with the template files yesterday, this is so exciting! Question: Will there be an option to record more than one face in the camera? Say real-time dialogue between two people in front of the webcam. Thanks!

  • @okaysamurai

    @okaysamurai

    7 жыл бұрын

    Currently not one one device - for that you'd want two computers w/ two cameras/mics and then record & composite it in AE or stream it together using OBS/Wirecast or something similar. Definitely doable though - see the June tips video where we did 3 puppets at a time for the "Meet the Team" event!

    Another fantastic video Dave, thanks. Regarding lighting your face. I once had a webcam with infrared LED's that would really light up your face, but wouldn't blind or annoy your eyes since it was infrared light. I would think the best position for such a light would be directly at nose level or perhaps below your chin pointing up, since that latter case would really help reduce shadows in the eye sockets. Do you think an IR webcam like would help with tracking?

  • @okaysamurai

    Awesome tutorial! I ha e a few questions as well; 1 When all is said and done, how many adobe products will I need to add in order to create my own animated series? I already subscrube to the Photoshop/Lightroom pack. 2. What system requirements am I looking at to run multiple adobe programs and animations lasting up to 30 minutes in length? 3 What role do An + Ch play with one another? Is it an either or, or does each one have its own critical function indipemdant from the other? Just trying to plan for how much I will need to buy from Adobe and what I'll have left over for the computer. Thanks in advance!

    Thanks! 1. If you're going to get one other app, get After Effects - it comes with CH so you get two apps that work well together. For me, I find myself using 6 Adobe apps together to make my videos: Photoshop and Illustrator for character creation, Character Animator for animation, Audition for audio, After Effects for post-production composition, and Premiere Pro for editing. But I'd say PS / CH / AE is the minimum for a longform cartoon. 2. Check out the AE system specs at helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/system-requirements.html - that sounds right to me. 3. Animate and CH currently don't interact with each other, they're kinda like two different tools in the toolbox.

    Great tutorial thank you! One thing I couldn't work out is why my illustrator file doesn't automatically centre to the scene? I'm only able to use CA Beta as I've yet to upgrade my Mac OS (which I've been advised not to as it's quite buggy). Would this make a difference?

  • @okaysamurai

    @okaysamurai

    6 жыл бұрын

    It should always auto-center, but if you have hidden layers or disconnected artwork that will be included in the calculation and can throw things off. See kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y6lnlpasZZWngKw.htmlm5s for adjusting the scene dimensions and using transform to reposition the character. And yes, there have been two major releases since going out of beta (1.0 & 1.5), so there are a ton of new features and performance improvements in the new versions - you should definitely update!

    Hi. Thank you for all of your content. It is really helpful. In June you presented the Ronin-character which had a really animated and ecpressful face. It also had a shortcut to place the head smaller in the corner within a circle. I am trying to make a character more like that. Is it somewhere these possibilities are explained more in detail?

  • @okaysamurai

    @okaysamurai

    6 жыл бұрын

    The main thing with Ronin is really subtle use of head turning, and Kevin (a talented artist) knowing how to line things up / move properly to give a sense of depth. Yeah, I think a more in-depth tutorial into head turning makes a lot of sense for the future. The circle was done in After Effects, most likely just using masking - if you look up AE simple masking tutorials I think you'll find what you need!

  • @Storyraymond

    Thank you. This helps some. I saw that one other puppet had the mouth together with jaw and cheeks. I guess if i take the time to do that together with subtle head turns, i will get a much more lifefull face.

  • @okaysamurai

    @okaysamurai

    Yeah, that's definitely an option. Gene from our official example page has a whole head background that changes with each mouth! But the mouth/jaw area is where the main movement can happen.

    Great tutorial, thanks so much! I have a few quick questions, hopefully you can answer. Eyes: can the motion of a pupil be limited (mine move around and get thrown off center quite easily), and can eye pupils be set behind eye holes, so if they rise up or down do not float above the face? Also, is there a way to get the body to not tilt every time I tilt my head (both the body and head seems to rotate in tandem.)

  • @okaysamurai

    @okaysamurai

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, the next upcoming release will allow you to limit pupil movement and add clipping masks - see the "New Features Preview" video on this channel for more. You need to add fixed handles to the Body group to keep them pinned down - check out the Body & Limbs sections of the "Making Your First Character" video on this channel for how to do that.

    Really well explained Dave, thanks. I got up and running fast. I notice the mouth template does not include a 'Th' phoneme (hope I'm using that word correctly). If I create one, will it work in the process? Are there other ones that will integrate into the software?

  • @okaysamurai

    @okaysamurai

    6 жыл бұрын

    Currently you are limited to the 11 audio visemes and 3 webcam ones. In our lip sync editing right-click menu, we recommend the "D" shape as the closest to a "Th" sound. But you do have the ability to create custom mouths - you would just need to manually trigger them, not via audio.

  • @okaysamurai
