I've been talking about building my photography website for so long! I started this video thinking I was just going to sit here and watch for half an hour, now it's past midnight and I've gotten my Home page done thanks to your easy to follow tutorial and tips! Thanks so much for the inspiration, John Branch IS awesome!

Been slightly struggling with my “style”. I personally tend to lean toward more darker and cooler type of edits when culturally it seems photos are more light and airy. When you meet with couples for wedding planning, do you ask them what look they are going for or are they going to you because they like your style? Being so new I still struggle with being me vs wanting to book clients. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks, John. This "how to" was more informative than the zillion Squarespace ads I've seen or heard on podcasts and other videos.

Nicely done! Very helpful and your voice definitely calms me. 😂 sometimes looking for help can stress someone out like myself. I go back and forth with photography as a business since it’s only a hobby for myself. Covid is hitting hard financially right now for us so I’ve been thinking about doing it. Getting information like your video to help me kick start my website.

Great video John! I think for those who want the capability to migrate your entire website, you have the option of building it by yourself from scratch if you are a Web developer. I personally like the templates and drag and drop site builder features of Squarespace. Similarly, I am sure you create Lightroom presets - I doubt you can easily "take" them and use them in Capture One or other Raw Processing softwares. You have a choice, don't blame Squarespace.

I enjoy reviewing all of your work on utube. I have been enjoying the world of photography since the days of film and the highest ISO was 100. I think the problem of booking clients remains a problem in SC as well from my understanding. I hope that bookings get better for you.

lol. I think it should help out with some ideas. It is very top level but I do plan on making some more in-depth videos focusing on maybe specific pages and design choices as well.

Do you put a caption and describe each image on the backside of the site for seo purposes?

Hi John! This was awesome, thank you, subbed 🙃 I just had a question. I noticed that the photos you are uploading are under 1MB. Most of my photos are around 30MB once they go through Lightroom and then Photoshop. Is this unnecessarily too heavy? I just want to make sure they are good quality so I think I'm overkilling it. Will my site be extremely slow to load because of this? Thanks 🍻

Hi John. Thank you for this video. I was able to follow along with out any problems but I ran into a few issues when trying to create buttons and every time with saving my work. Every time I hit save and tried moving on to the next section, my background on my home page kept reverting back to the default background . Also, when I tired double clicking on the picture to create my buttons, my picture would just flash and the pop up screen to make my selections never popped up. Can you help me and tell me what I’m doing wrong .. Anita

Do they allow you to book and take retainer fees? Also do they have invoice?

Is it cool if you make a video about how you advertise your website? SEO, Google Ads, etc...? I would truly appreciate the help!

Just started your video. I was so frustrated with squarespace. I spent an hour trying to put a vertical image in a horizontal "image block" and wanted to murder everyone around me haha. Maybe I'll give it another chance. I can't believe (the perceived) counter-intuitiveness. Can I please just drag stuff and move it around? Can't it automatically detect if my images are 2:3 or 3:2?

Hey John! I just watched the whole website critique, well, not in one go, haha. I learned a lot, so thanks for sitting nearly 5 hours! Got some good inspiration. 7.1 is the answer! I was tweaking with the grid gallery so much while watching the website critique. Right now I have the click through and even I get bored looking trough my pictures.

Love your work. I am aspiring to be a wedding photographer. I follow you and VJ and am learning a lot. I've been into photography since 2000 and have been a second shooter for 3 weddings. Thanks a bunch! And that's awesome to hear that you're going to be venturing out to doing your own wedding soon. Exciting times! For albums I'm currently using Red Tree Albums. They're SUPER premium and actually only sell to professional wedding photographers. If you're looking for something a little cheaper but still good check out Artifact Uprising. They're who I used when I first started out.

Thanks again for the great content. I really appreciate the nuggets about the landing page and booking! Please show us more info about styled shoots. I'm looking to get into wedding photography but I don't have the portfolio that matches my target audience.

I would HIGHLY recommend NOT using stock photography on your site even if you haven’t done any weddings yet. Wedding photography is a very trust forward type of photography and I feel that would be being dishonest to your couples. They would be paying you money kit even really knowing with the product is going to look like.

Yes. The templates are more of a guideline to give you an idea but just because certain templates say they’re for photography doesn’t mean that’s all they can do.

Helpful, but Squarespace must have changed some of their formatting because some of your info is hidden elsewhere. Would love to see an updated video.

They have. They're now on Squarespace 7.1 which made a HUGE change in how you can build your website. I'll need to update this video. Thanks for pointing that out.

I do all of that through Pic-Time. Squarespace isn't the best platform for sharing and purchasing prints.

It sounds like you might have it in your footer? There's not a reason it should show up on both pages unless you put it in a place that's showing on the whole website, like your header or footer. But I'd have to see it to really know.

I absolutely do not want to use Squarespace for my website. Why would I pay $16 up to $49 per month perpetually forever for Squarespace to host my website when I can host it myself for free? Why would I let another company host and essentially own all of my personal data? Total scam.
