The real challenge for me, and I think most people, is branding yourself. As a designer I can brand other people no problem, but as soon as it’s for me.... I just hit a wall. Every time. Overcoming self doubt about this is also a key stumbling block. That said, this was a good reminder to really kick myself up the arse and sort this out. Thanks man.,

Having your own website, is like having your own show-room, you decide what goes where, what the client sees first, what he sees second, what he doesn't see at all, how and when he can get in touch, you are in control so you can show your best the way you know best!

I remember you talking about Instagram being "the new portfolio" like 3-4 years ago in a video, and ever since then I started upping my game there. But I started realising otherwise like a year ago - more clients want a website where they can choose what category of work they want to see. It's overall more professional... and the quality doesn't get compressed. But your tip overall helped me be more picky with what I post on instagram, witch I also think is important!

Same here. It’s like people don’t want to spend the money for pictures. I always get into discussions with people about doing it but once it comes to money they don’t want to really do it. But those few instances is all the encounters I have had. It’s hard to find people and in constantly trying to reach out to people to get paid gigs.

Excellent video and so true. As pro sports photog for over 10 years running, with 100+ teams I’ve never set up a website to showcase a portfolio or video work I’ve completed.. since starting a YT channel, this is SOOOO TRUE because a possible client may seek out our channel, and that would not entirely reflect the capacity of work that we can execute.

"people dont have time for that" such a true statement, people will watch a tutorial but when it comes to certain things they are looking for then they want the info NOW and not in 20 minutes. The biggest thing is learning your audience and what they are looking for. This is my 4th and newest channel and I have learnt this the hard way. I do product reviews and people shopping want the info quickly. I can make a 10 minute video and it gets 50% viewed or I can make a 3 minute video that gets watched almost 100%. Was the same for my cooking channel, my gaming channel etc.

True but to be fair.. a good website is not always a 'template' website... it needs to tell your story and fit you as a person or brand. Otherwise you are the same as anyone else... Socials are good for community building.. which can lead to your website... but because it's this end station, it's important that you present yourself the best you can.. and templates are not always the way to go then... this might not fit everyone or every brand...

Peter you got big from social media. And i include KZread with social media. Pretty much nobody ever visits a website. They need to specifically look for you to find your website

KZread is a website for the owner to get people to use the platform. People can post their content on here while the owner (Google) can profit off of people's content. Without websites, the internet would be just text like back in the old days before internet became public.

Now that you have said this I think it is very true that we post so much on social media specially being a photographer/Videographer that we don't know what people first see when they start scrolling down.

THANK YOU for this. There are legitimate reasons why some people may refuse to access Instagram (aka Facebook). Don’t try to force your potential clients into your world; give them a publicly accessible website. No animosity intended, but there are businesses I don’t work with because the only way to learn about them is through “social media” sites I do not use. Also, if you work for local government/schools/services; make sure you aren’t making this same mistake. Because you will be blocking citizens/parents from participating if you communicate only via closed “social media” systems.

When I started my company doing photo and video professionally, I spent weeks creating my portfolio with hardcopy specifically in mind, so it could be printed in smaller booklet style copies. My husband thought it was a waste of time... "it's all going to be posted on social media" ... flash forward 2 years to our booth at Pride Orlando last week when the digital photo display kept crashing, those hard copies were directly responsible for securing clients who otherwise would have just kept walking.

Coming back to this. I just got my dream job, and the reason why is because they saw my insta feed and loved it. In this sense, my feed was my portfolio. Now, I had a website to supplement it (or the other way around), but it was extremely crucial for it to be polished. Dont neglect the feed! Could be huge. (Full time gig, not a freelance gig)

With all due respect Peter, and I do mean it considering I have been following you for years and shaping a lot of my own work around yours, it is people like you who made social media a portfolio of a sorts to begin with. Perhaps it was a temporal springboard, nevertheless, to rid of this social media culture is no easy task. However, it is both humbling and admirable that you not only recognize the deep effects of social media has on the art of photography and society at large. Keep it up man. After all, the artists first job is to portray beauty which is radiant, clear, and whole. God Bless!!

Could not agree more. The biggest benefit I ever did in my film career was create a website with a custom domain off the jump (ironically yes, I did use Squarespace to do this). It made me stand out against the other creators in my niche, and therefore gave me room to get better quality clients/higher pay. Invest in yourself 🎬🙌🏼
