Building the Ultimate Workbench for my Dream Garage
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In today's episode, I'm building a MASSIVE workbench to get my dream garage organized. Small parts and hardware organization has been a real challenge for me in the workshop, so I'm fabricating and 3D printing my way into the craziest workbench I've ever made.

This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble kzread.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!

3D print a hose adapter. Gridfinity for the bins. Cut individual plywood pieces for each of the toolboxes, glue the top down, and when dry remove and screw up from the bottom.
@GrindhousePerformance
7 ай бұрын
For the volume of bins (1000+), printing them wasn't really going to be worth the time and I didn't want this to be a reason to buy a bunch more printers. I've seen the plywood stands on top of the boxes and just didn't really like the way that looks. Definitely more work this way but I'm really happy with how everything turned out! 👍
If you were looking for deeper drawers, cut out the bottom of a shallow drawer and bolt it to the drawer below. That way you keep the look of the drawer front while getting more capacity.
@GrindhousePerformance
Жыл бұрын
That'd be pretty intense 😯
@evanciambrone9373
Жыл бұрын
This seems like a really good idea.... You could fold the bottom down and rivet it to the sidewalls of the lower drawers. That would make use of the upper pair of drawer slides for weight capacity
@legallyfree2955
11 ай бұрын
I have done similar to this, I cut the bottom out of a drawer then put in 1/2 inch plywood "U" shape nearly the height of both drawers and screwed that on the sides. This nicely completely covered up my very messy cut so I dont cut my hand open every time I stick it in there. I couldn't use a square shape because I couldn't open the drawers fully and place it in so I wound up cutting the back off so it's just a U now. Of course this means I lost an inch of drawer width but not a big deal for what I was doing. I also cut the bottom out of the top drawer with an angle grinder before removing the foam base from the second drawer. That was also a mistake.
nice job on the bench and love the process, i have subscribed and need more .....

Been waiting for a new video! Great bench idea, not overkill by any means, seriously great idea. I would have done the same thing with routing the bottom of the bench tops. I’ll be asking you where the red bins came from, gonna steal that one! And I want a hat.
@GrindhousePerformance
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Fred! Routing the top was worth the effort and mess. The bins are from Schaller, they're what people use in pro cabinets. I actually reached out to them about producing a run of several thousand 1.5" deep bins specifically for the Harbor Freight boxes but they weren't interested... I also looked into developing the tooling to injection mold them myself but this seemed like the easiest alternative. I've got black, and red/white/blue hats in stock!
This brings me back to when we where getting Nine Lives Racing fired up and I was working by myself. Your attitude is spot on. Before you know it you’ll have a full shop packed full of employees.

Something to consider, it does technically weaken the work surface by routing out the bottom. If you're hammering a lot and using the bench for heavy work, there's a chance it can split at the seam. I have other benches for that kind of work, but just as a caution 👍

I got a 56" and a 6-ft butcher block top. Cut plywood to fit inside the lip, just a bit proud so I won't damage the sheet metal if I hammer on the butcher block. It allowed me to move the top around for a few days to figure out the overhang L-R and front-back before I committed to bolting it. I also bolted bumper hitches to the underside to temporarily attach small vises, bench grinder, and a belt & disk sander. You don't have to clear off the bench to make room for a bench tool!
@GrindhousePerformance

Really like the bumper hitch idea, did you have to shim the tool stands from having a bunch of play in them?
@aleghart
Жыл бұрын
@@GrindhousePerformance (Not sure where my reply went. Maybe the Amazon links were causing a problem. ) The bumper hitch already had a bolt tapped in. A quick turn with a wrench stops the wobble. Mounted a parrot vise to a winch plate. Grinder and belt/disc sander are on a 2x12 first, then a winch plate. Eventually will have 2 small 4-5" vises and a grinder with wire and buffing wheels. I just saw Harbor Freight makes a hitch-mount vise now. Worth a look for me. Also looking at making some kind of 'shelf'-like thing out of strut channel to dock the mounted equipment when not used. Hey thanks! Glad you liked it. I ended up getting injured shortly after posting this video, and slowly finished everything while I was recovering. I'm going to post a shop tour video + workbench update video sometime soon
You need a Band Saw haha. Props to you for doing all those on a table saw haha.

Lmao thanks. I tried every saw in the shop to see what cut the cleanest in the least amount of time. I didn't expect the table saw to do as nice of a job as it did. The bandsaw I have cut a lot slower and got hot enough to start melting the boxes. It worked, but took longer to cut and clean up the edge after. Maybe a different blade would've performed better, only had one meant for stainless

@GrindhousePE haha that makes sense. The jig you made was some good thinking though. Good job for sure
Your very first sentence in this video is brutally true and I'm really struggling with it. If you fix and DO things all these little bits are essential and often save the day. OK, getting back to the video, thanks!
This is incredible, but god damn that's a lot of work. If I ever did this myself, I'd consider trying to make slotted inserts similar to the way high end boxes are configured... (Snap on, Rousseau, Vidmar, etc)

I like being able to take the bins out of the bench to wherever im working in the shop. I might still do some slotted inserts for drawers later on depending how it all fills out though 👍
You deserve more subscribers. Well done, sir.

Really kind of you, people have been great sharing my content despite being so small! Thanks
Great video man, new subscriber and love your ideas and I need to get into 3 D printing. I know this is an older video you should have 3D printed a adapter for your vacuum. Oh well great content!

You're 100% right. At that point I found the adapter dewalt provided was wrong, and had everything set up. Just wanted to push through and get it done 👍 thanks for subscribing and I hope you check out some of my other projects!
Man. The new series 3 do have deeper drawers. You might have liked them, too.

I haven't had a chance to see the Series 3's in person yet! I get why they changed the drawer arrangement but they look a little weird with the extra deep top drawer. Hopefully they're as good as the series 2 boxes. Have you gotten to check them out?
I really like the workbench made with tool boxes. It looks awesome. I'm currently remodeling my garage and I'm curious. What was the deciding factor on the box? Why not the icon boxes? Great video can't wait to see the finished setup.

I picked these specifically because of the drawer arrangement and width. With the top narrow drawers I think you'll run out of physical space before you hit the weight limit of the drawer slides. If the drawers were a lot larger they'd get extremely heavy full of hardware and that's not really what these style toolboxes are designed for. Being 8 drawers, I'm planning to have the bottom 2 deep drawers be overflow storage for the 6 top drawers. Drawer 4-6 has enough height for adding a second set of slides if I overload them. I also liked the symmetrical look between everything, a lot of the wider boxes have a wide set of drawers and a smaller one. I'm also only putting hardware & supplies in this box. If you're also storing tools there might be better options 👍
Great video good luck. You will be building a great memory rembering where those parts are. Next time just 3d print a router vac attachment.

100%! I got caught up in the moment and just wanted to get it done. Everything's been working out great so far though!
I've done the same thing with those Schaller bins using a jewelers saw on the router table. That way I was able to just turn them upside down and trim them. Unfortunately Schaller does not make 1-1/2" deep bins.

That's a great, really smart solution. Being able to put them upside down makes trimming them really easy I'd bet. I REALLY tried convincing them of the business case to make a set of tooling for 1.5" bins. I even spent a week working with different injection molding companies to look at making bins specifically to fit the HF drawers.. designed dies and everything 😅

Awesome idea with the tool boxes and the countertop! Did you consider a sled design for the table saw so that you could rip a few storage bins at a time, the 3d printer pliers design is neat but that is a lot of time cutting one bin at a time. I had to do something similar for a home project and threw together a quick sled with scrap plywood and was able to rip 5 pieces at a time of some plastic post caps.

I made a few attempts with other ways of cutting the bins. I'd tried all the different tools etc in the shop and some other designs/sleds but the pliers seemed the most consistent/safest. The taper on the sides really wants to walk out if you don't have enough pressure on multiple sides. I could've gotten away with a sled if I was comfortable getting fingers closer to the blade. With doing a couple thousand of them I wanted something I thought gave a little more room. I was able to do a full drawer in about 30 minutes 👍

@@GrindhousePerformance do you sell those pliers??? I really like the idea of using the toolboxes like that. Nice job!!
For the hose adapter, check out Rockler’s “ Dust Right FlexiPort Power Tool Hose Kit, 3' to 12' Expandable”. It has fit my DeWalt 3.25hp router

That’s a lot of work … but in the end it looks great. BUT, you should have waited cuz now Harbor Freight has the 34”x23” 6 drawer full bank service cart that you could have used for the bins and probably not needed to cut them down to small little shorties … you get an A for effort for sure.
