I just love that your little girl is helping you out. My dad who grew up and lived on a farm showed me how to use tools when I was about 9 years old. I knew how to change an electrical outlet/switch/light. I knew the basic techniques in using a saw. When I got my first car, he taught me how to change a tire and my oil. I use those skills today. Your daughter will remember helping daddy and she will be able to do minor repairs and fixes in her later years. Great job Dad! I have a decent set of tools and use the Tool cart shown in this video. I got into ham radio and now have specialty tools and testers/analyzers. I am now looking for organization tips instead of putting stuff in the drawers. Thank you for a great video.

This is a great setup for 99% of homeowners. I don't think the tool chest is even necessary, but it is cool and does make organizing easier. Harbor Freight really is the best place to get tools for 99% of people. Let's say my $7 set of Pittsburgh screwdrivers goes bad after... 10 years of occasional use... just buy another set. Why buy a $50-$100 set that may or may not last longer? Good choices!

Hey guy, what an awesome brother you are. And very thoughtful. I’m a journeyman diesel mechanic of 34 years so I’ve got tools coming out of my ears lol. But when I first started out it was with a set of craftsman tools. It was a bit of a larger set for around $450. I used a charge card at sears and I did not have a roll cart to start, I had a small top chest that I hauled around for the longest time. My first real tool box came from snap on, was very well used and beat up but I scored it for around $300 and made my weekly payments on it until it was paid off and then grew from there. Now I’ve got a huge snap on tool box top and bottom and a snap on service cart and full length locker. Over the years I’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars on tools. And here’s the best advice I can offer. Snap on, Matco, Mac Tools, and Cornwell tools all do have their place. But I’ve NEVER broken a craftsman wrench, ever. I have broken wrenches from most of the others mentioned though. Also bent quite a few, especially Mac wrenches. And tool boxes ? If I had it all to do over - right now - I’d buy the Icon tool box from Harbor Freight. Everytime I go into HF I check out that Icon tool box, the professional one, the biggest one they have displayed, with the hutch and 2 full length lockers etc, and I am impressed with it. It’s built better than the snap on box I own and just like my snap on box it’s double walled and welded. At HALF the price as it stands right now. But like I said, the others DO have their place. I work with those tools every day, and they stand up to the daily grind, the daily use and abuse. So that’s where I’d spend the majority of my money. The kids that get hired on to our shop nowadays all see the kind of tools we have and a lot of them think they have to have that “right now” until they see the prices we pay, and they get discouraged, some to the point of quitting before they even give themselves a chance. It IS expensive. But I tell them “you do not have to start out that way”, build your box 1 tool at a time. Start out with the cheap stuff from harbor freight. It’ll get you by and some it is surprisingly sturdy. I’ve known guys that bought their snap on wrench sets 1 wrench at a time. You don’t have to ski. That cat all at once. But by the time you become the “old timer” in the shop your tool set will match your experience. (And by then you’ll be sick af of the job, the expense etc) lol. Good luck to ya and your bro.

For anyone looking to get one of these mechanics toolsets, the Gearwrench set is usually on sale at Home Depot. It’s a 232pc set that in my opinion, is much more comprehensive than the craftsman set and the tools feel like they are of a much higher quality. It basically provides you with most everything you’d need for 1/4 and 3/8, both SAE and metric, and also includes a decent set of deep sockets as well. The only thing it doesn’t have that I think every starter mechanic should need are swivels. It’s $200 on sale, regular $315. It’s quite a nice set to start with, and I would bet anyone who has it will retain almost every tool from it as they graduate to a bigger box setup. Having said that, craftsman is also a good brand and the US General tool cart he’s got here is also a very good choice.

That's an awesome setup for someone starting out. I'm sure they'll get a lot of use out of it. Being the tool guy out of my family and friends. I usually do something similar. I head in a slightly different direction, though. I like to lean a little more towards carpenter type tools. You know, like a hammer, adjustable wrench, vice grips, utility knife, some putty knives, a caulk gun, and saw, etc. That Pittsburgh pliers set is a good one that I always include. I don't lean so heavily on the socket sets, I usually only include a 3/8 set, like those Craftsman clamshell sets, and I go with the classic craftsman 6 piece acetate handle screwdriver set, even though it doesn't have as many different drivers. Even so, you put together an excellent set. They have a really good start. That was really nice of you to put in the extra time with the foam. With Christmas not far off, I'm wondering if you're planning any more additions. Cordless drill, perhaps?
