Building Snow Castles: Sansa and Night's Queen - ASOS Sansa VIII read-along
Ойын-сауық
All of the eerie symbolism of the Vale comes to a head in this Sansa chapter, of George’s best. “The Snow Castle chapter,” as its called, has some of the best clues about what’s truly going on in the Heart of Winter!

sooooo refreshing to hear someone appreciate and actually understand Sansa. soooo much misogyny in this fandom, but not in this community!!
I remember building sand castle with my grandparents when I was a kid. My mom put the urns on a high shelf after that. 🤪
The Sansa chapters have always been some of my favorites.
I love Sansa's story arc- I love how it mirrors Persephone's mythology so well! Thanks for the great stream, I'm excited to see what you'll cook up next 🤗
This was one of the best streams. The chapter rereads are the best, you break them down like no other. 🔥✨
Oh. My. Garth. The sheer number of "holy shit" moments I had during this stream. You could teach a whole media literacy course (something we as a society badly need more of) just on this series alone. Professor Lightbringer!! Not sure where you're thinking of going next, but I know I'd be very interested in more Jon and Tyrion chapter read alongs. Specifically from Jon's time north of the wall with the wildlings and of Tyrions journey in Dance!

I find the Sansa chapters fascinating! Thanks for the awesome stream LML!!
So many reasons this is a great chapter! Symbolism, excitement, madness!
Great symbolism deconstruction! Nice way to spend the evening.
I'm sorry to hear that less people have been tuning in for these, but I absolutely agree with you that this is top tier content. I get a lot of joy out of watching these symbolism videos in live stream form. All of your videos are great but, like you mentioned, there is something about the experience of hearing you put it together and seeing the excitement for you that takes it to another level. Whenever you do deep dives, whether they're chapter reads or just theory videos, I always come away with new thoughts and theories and a renewed excitement for these stories.

This was a great stream! All the talk of Night's Queen's death and rebirth as a "cycle" reminds me of the South Slavic goddess Marzana (or Morana in other Slavic cultures), the goddess of death and dreams, who in some legends is also just the other alias/half of the goddess of spring
@DavidLightbringer

“in some legends,” that’s how I’ll say it. “In some legends, Nissa Nissa BECAME night’s queen, but in others, they are merely besties”
About the slipper thing -- there's Dorothy's ruby ones that she clicks together while saying "There's no place like home". In the Brother's Grimm version of CInderella, she prays to a tree that grows from her mother's grave. And in an older French version (The Ash-Tree Girl), the protagonist is abanonned by an ash tree as an infant. She grows up only to find out that her lover's wife is her long-lost twin sister. These versions have a few things in common: a hidden, unknown identity that is eventually revealed with some object, some rivalry with a close family member, and a connection to her mother through a tree. Oh and in some versions she turns into a bird. Interesting stuff.

Ooh, I'm getting all kinds of Sandor "little bird" vibes from that last part, actually!
It's pretty incredible that Sansa was able to build the snow model of Winterfell. Think about it...she is from there, but would have spent most of her time on the inside where you wouldn't get a proper view of the "skyline". Plus, how many of us could make s model of the downtown of our city from memory? Also..... Fëanor made the Silmarils. Sauron had nothing to do with them. He doesn't really enter the story until much later.

he was in disguise as Anatar and had to do with the rings. melkor stole the silmarils
I said it as a joke in the chat, but now I am thinking about the runes house Royce wears. Would Waymar Royce have lived if he was wearing the "protective" runes? They don't offer much protection in a fight against another human. The Royce's are a first men house, so the runes pre-date the Andals coming to Westeros.
@c.w.8200

I always thought these runes probably spell something like: "Property of house Royce, if you're not a Royce and wear this armor you and your whole family are cursed forever", I mean, that armor must have been pretty valuable to the bronze age first men.

I wouldn’t be surprised if rude magic does protect against perhaps the wights, of not the others. maybe it doesn’t kill them, but it might protect against them
maybe the reason that the others are symbolized as the castle itself is that they form a metaphorical castle, like living walls surrounding and protecting the heart of winter where night’s queen and king live. and the heart of winter is the core and essence of the frozen half of the weirwood net that night’s queen created and controls
Interesting to see the archetypes at play

My honest opinion....there are not enough Sansa videos in the world! Sooooo looking forward to this idunn/Sansa theory video 👀
These past few weeks have been great streams! It is fun to watch you re-discover, or discover anew, clues in the symbolism that further support the ideas you have already put forth. I especially enjoyed the slamming of the moon door into the wall and your highlighting of the similar kind of language in one of Jon’s chapters. I don’t think I had ever heard you talk about Jon’s dream of the moon calling out Snow and his subsequent throwing of his pillow against the wall, where it explodes. Such epic stuff!
When Sansa builds the tower it starts as 3 snowballs she stacks up and then shapes into a tower I wonder if that says something about the Others in the walls or they being the foundation of winterfell

LOVE chapter rereads… these save my sanity at work 🤯!
GREAT re-read, very entertaining and learned so many new things about Sansa & Lysa I never noticed before. Thank you David!!!
Great stream!
In the confrontation with Sansa, Lysa is projecting everything she did onto Sansa and Catelyn. She tells that Sansa is trying to trap littlefinger, but it was Lysa who has repeatedly tried to trap littlefinger. She accuses Cat of stealing littlefinger too.She is saying Sansa is giving Marillion the looks, but it was probably Lysa who was doing that. She calls Sansa a liar, but Lysa is the one who lies. LYsa is a liar. I just noticed she also has the same Ly prefix as Lyanna. All the Night's Queen figures seem to be hiding some kind of secret, they're lying about something.
Dwight from the Office as an Other,”Identity theft is not a joke Jim!” Dwight Walker Yes, you’re welcome
loved the stream
Thank you, David, interesting, informative, charming as always❤
Marillion simply heeded Queen's words: The show must go on.
It might be profitable to research the band Marillion to find out if GRRM was indeed referencing them with the singer's name. The band date from the early 1980s, so they were around long before GoT and George may well harbour a nostalgic love or hate for them. Furthermore, their first few albums had consistent artwork featuring a sad, tormented JESTER, indeed their breakout album was called "Script For A Jester's Tear". Their name does NOT come from the colour, it's a contraction of "Silmarillion" from JRR Tolkien. Their lead singer when they were most successful in the '80s went by the stage name "Fish".

Hey David. I need to apologize to you. It was me who sent a superchat to you years ago about the brood parasitism practices of the mockingbird. I had said that the mockingbird practices brood parasitism... This IS technically true, but the reality is far weirder than you or I realized. The mockingbird is actually a kidnapper of cuckoo chicks. That's right. They kidnap "little birds" a mockingbird will build several nests and waits for a cuckoo to lay an egg in one of its bait nests. Only then will the mockingbird lay its own egg alongside the cuckoo egg. The mockingbird then raises BOTH chicks as its own. It seems counterintuitive until you realize that cuckoo chicks are bigger and more defenseless than mockingbird chicks. The mockingbird is counting on a predator eating the plump cuckoo chick and being too full to eat the small, sweetrobinlike mocking bird chick. The wild thing is that it STILL fits the theme of the kidnapped little bird Sansa and little sweetrobin... but which is which? Cheers, -Hrangan
Thank you for these awesome chapter re-reads and analysis. Fly Lysa, fly!

Concerning “slipping on an icy skin” If ice magic is cold green seer magic and one possesses the living and the other possesses the dead, then varamir six skins shows us skin changers can possess multiple targets at once. Therefore it could be the same idea with the others, each one possesses multiple corpses at once (imagine bran with 10 hodors) we can start to see how an other legion might be filled out. I’ll add that she sails with this icy skin, sounds like walking around inside a corpse
Great stream big dave!
You have several times mentioned Lysa being locked away in the Vale after her marriage. Did she not spend nearly her entire marriage in King's Landing with the Hand?

I'm 8 months late but the marillion thing is driving me nuts lol. Yes marillion is an 80s Brit prog rock group and I remember reading George was a fan. I took the musician in the story as a nod to that.. But they were originally called Silmarillion. Also tho, the silmarils were created by feanor, an elf, who stole the light of the trees of the valar before suffering a great fall and being banished from the heavenly realm of valinor. Feanor means lightbringer.
Great stuff David

Coming back to leave a comment, and no, I wasn't offended that I was accidentally put in time out. :D I don't usually say much anyway on these streams as most here are much deeper into it than I have been. I just enjoy listening and hearing the new connections between everything. I need to study up on the older fairy tales and mythology. Always had a deep interest in it all, but alas, life has distracted me.
I just googled one-legged god and it turns out that "Ekapada is a one-footed aspect" of Shiva. He unites the serpent, deer and trident symbolis in one figure. He's also the cosmic axis? Its a grand unifying symbolism kinda thing. In Elden Ring, the last Fire Giant at some point rips off hit left leg to.. ehm, let's say, wake up his inner R'hllor. The entire ending plot points of Elden Ring seem kinda relevant to our story and I'm pretty convinced that ASOIAF will hit on some of the same important beats.

Great video!
Azor Ahai causes the long night when he uses the weirwoods to force Nissa Nissas skinchanger soul into a dragon. Their son, the last hero uses the dragon (lightbringer) which he is now genetically bonded with, to defeat him and end the long night, maybe, I don't know, I just think that dragons will be central to this story in some way. I'm convinced lightbringer ultimately refers to a dragon and that the black swords and flaming swords and swords from the stars are symbols of that
the talk about replacement of the old by the young and beautiful reminds me of cersei's prophecy. so the theme of replacement nissa nissa/night's queen i think might have some relevance. love the conclusion of the eyrie/arryn stuff. even their andal invasion history seems mythically closer to age of heroes via dragon/long night metaphor than the pretty grounded andal invasions. there's the winged knight/artys arryn who may have been a dragon knight instead, whose wife was a child of the forest who died giving birth to a child. a dragonrider would probably have no problem with a moon door.
I've lived in Texas all my life where the mockingbird is the state bird. How did i miss that it's a cuckbird!? 😂
Jojen is small and has visions that give him tremors. Maybe Robin doesn't know how to describe his green dreams because he wasn't raised in Northern culture? His physical description and ailments remind me of Bran and Jojen.
Gotta bring it back to bran the blessed, actually think he's a welsh folklore character who went over to ireland to beat the irish king who was abusing his wife (bran's sister). I live near to dinas bran, an old ruined castle in llangollen that was supposedly named after him
Loved this chapter re-read ❤️
Sounds to me like Winterfell is/was the original Heart of Winter. Night’s Queen might take it back, and the fighting goes beyond, down to the Riverlands and beyond. A final confrontation at Winterfell makes sense if it’s lost early on, but Winterfell has changed hands several times already.
such a great chapter

Just when I thought I couldn't appreciate GRRM's writing anymore, we do another re-read. Positive vibes going out to George and all the great progress he's making on the book.
Have not listened yet, but I'm loving these Vale-centric streams!! I remembered bits and pieces strewn across some of your other videos, but was always wanting for a great unified symbolism analysis of this _nutso_ location 😂 It also hit me in waves as I slowly read the books how alike it is to the North (but stranger, tbh), complete with its own version of Wildlings (who are the original residents and were pushed out of civilization; the more I learn about these tribes the more fascinated and empathetic I feel). Basically it gets colder as you go Up instead of North. What's better, an ice cell or a sky cell? 🤔🥶

The Wall being made of (possibly giant) Others isn't as crazy as it may sound. I mean it's literally what Attack on Titan did, in that story the three walls of Paradis are all made of colossal Titan encased in hardening Crystal
I have been waiting for this Sansa discussion for so long! She's one of those minor major characters that kinda hide the role they'll have at the climax or conclusion but when we get there none of it would be possible without them (thinking Snape, Jean Grey, Hippolyta and Diana Freeman from the Lovecraft Country series). Those bird metaphors and the history of the ravens in Westeros comes up waaaayy too often for it to be a minor plot point. Lysa is kicked out of the nest (RIP), Sansa takes up a perch high in the mountains, she feeds of her mother's expectations like a baby bird; she's even doing the brood parasite thing by moving into Robert's home and leaching resources. How do I say this without saying he words "Sansa is for the birds"? 🤔🤣 I realized as i listened that Petyr is so greedy, he's cannibalizing his own parasites 😬
Dope!
Nut and Geb are the origin of the Earth and Sky in the Egyptian creation myth. I was misremembering Nut as the Mother Earth and Geb as the Starry Sky Father, but actually it is the other way around. Geb is usually depicted as a -green- man in artwork and is a fertility symbol. Interesting detail, he also represents a -prison for the dead- and prevents movement of the dead in the afterlife.... Nut and Geb were said to be born holding each other so tightly, that their father, Air, had to separate them. And so Geb cried for Nut and created the Oceans, while Nut reaches towards the Earth becoming the Starry Sky that stretches over us. She also swallows the sun every night and gives birth to the day, bringing -dawn.- I feel like there is a LOT there waiting to be even further feathered out in a future video! Perhaps Ancient Egyptian Myth in ASOIAF? In whatever capacity that can be done! Lol. Whether it's finding parallels to Azor Ahai & Nissa Nissa, or particular character arcs & themes. Nut and Geb being born as twins and so tightly bound really made me think of Cersei and Jaime... wonder if George is using them as a creation myth? Would love to hear your Starry Wisdom on this! 🌠 Good Luck on All Your Recent and Future Endeavors! Have been really enjoying all your content recently. (And revisiting some of these chapter reread's and older videos).
You wondered out loud about the connection when Sansa first wants to build a snow knight (an Other), then she decides building a snow version of her home would be better. Could this be GRRM symbolically telling us that Night's Queen was making Others, and then the next stage of Nights Queen's plan is to create an icy home for her family? Aka invading south of the wall/turning the whole world icy. Then Sansa longing to leave the Eerie, where she is Littlefinger's captive, and go home, is symbolic of Night's Queen longing to escape the Weirwoodnet and the evil clutch's of Nights King. Later Sansa scolds Baelish for: "taking me here instead of home." Aka trapping her in the wierwoodnet. So basically Step one: Create snow knights aka create White Walkers. Step two: build a snow castle, aka turn the world icy/conquer the world. Step three: profit aka escape the Weirwoodnet.
I think somthing magical happened to help Jorah win the turnament. Or a super advanced conspiracy. Someone wanted Jorah to end up with Dany and he still have somthing important tl do...
Faenor makes the Silmarils - Faenor was also kind of a dick and Galadriel didn't like him and didn't contribute her hair to the creation of the gems, Morgoth coveted them and stole them, Then they were lost forever. Sauron was Morgoth's lieutenant who was originally the Maiar called Mairon who then took on the false identity of Annatar "The giver of gifts" who tricked the elven smiths into forging the great and minor magic rings including 16 rings of power. Then he forged his one ring on his own and because he gave the knowledge of God to the elves, all 19 of their rings touched by Sauron were bound to his one ring. However, the elves made 3 great rings of power in secret and these maintained their own power when the one ring was created, but ultimately since the knowledge sauron gave was used in their creation, they were still tied to it and its fate. All elves holding the 16 rings took them off immediately as Sauron's will tried to conquer their minds and control them, and he went to war to recover the 16 rings, which he did eventually. Then he gave them to the 7 dwarf lord who fell to greed and dragons as the rings twisted their minds, but he could not conquer their minds either as they were things of cogs and machines, but the 9 he gave to men worked as he desired and he was able to infiltrate their minds with ease and slowly poison them with his influence.

30:22 Snow coming apart on her hand
👍
31:09 agreed! I never understood that part in the story, or the inference others have made when talking about the "corpse queen". Because the others obviously can't reproduce on their own, so how could she have? She's something extra special (like you say, was once Nissa Nissa probably, and I'm buying into this theory now). Just wondering who will be the next Night's Queen for real if there will be one. I used to watch James of Thrones' off-the-wall theory videos, and he thought Dany would turn into the Night's Queen. I thought that was a pretty cool idea, and THAT would subvert our expectations in a cool way, unlike what D&D did w/the show... I think it was him and some other GOT content creators which helped frame this story - or at least the meta part of it - in terms of the central question being presented by GRRM as: would you rather live free and have chaos that you can't expect from others in life, which may even harm and kill you or loved ones or destroy things you hold dear? OR would you rather have everything controlled and taken care of for you (via the White Walkers controlling you as their slave) and never have to worry about anything in life again? It's the central difference between the two types of people who exist (R and K types which I learned from someone outside of this realm of YT). Sadly, most fall in to the latter category, but I want to remain a part of humanity who is willing to live free and die free rather than be someone's slave for eternity all for safety's sake. It's God's will vs. The Devil's.
