Building Skateparks & Community With The Uganda Skateboard Society | SKATE TALES S2

The true unit of measurement in skateboarding is heart and not skill. Skateboarding doesn’t require skill to begin with, but it demands heart from day one.
The people who gain most from skating are those to whom it means most, and you will go a long way before you find more pure skateboarding passion than within our main man Gose Gerald and the Ugandan Skateboarding Society.

23:00 - Why The Locals Like About Skateboarding
25:30 - Last Session. At The Park
27:20 - What Does Skateboarding Mean To Uganda Skateboard Society?
This episode of Skate Tales sees Latvian pro skater extraordinaire and man of the people Madars Apse enlist Tyler Surrey to go and meet the skate crew who built their own unique park from plans off the internet, and then started to create their own moves!
One magic facet of skateboarding is that it adapts to the environment in which it finds itself- from the downhills of Brazil to the built environment of Japanese cities.
In Uganda, Madars finds the local skate crew ripping their own mini-mega ramp doing tricks with both no name and many - and learns from rulers like Rashid Sserunjogi, Travor Kanyike, Shanitah Blessings and Brian Bukenya what skateboarding has offered them and their hopes for where it may yet take them.
Heart is the engine room of the whole skate game, and this episode has it in a big way.
Enjoy, and give them a follow for more!
The Uganda Skateboard Society has recently launched a fundraiser with the goal of raising money to buy land to build their next skatepark. In 2016 the local skaters in Uganda built a DIY skatepark, which has formed a cornerstone of the Uganda Skateboard Society and become a gathering place for skaters in the area. The community is now at a place where they are looking to raise funds to purchase land for the new home of skateboarding in Uganda, so that they can buy enough land to have a store and an office as well as a new skatepark.

I am an old guy now well past my prime, but I’m watching this just before leaving a construction site and I bet my eyes look red because they’ve been tearing up. I miss the days of pure innocent joy out with my friends, trying to figure out what skateboard can do. Not a care in the world. What I mean is I certainly had things to worry about off the board, but when I was with my friends skating, none of it mattered. This video is so pure.

To see this is phenomenal. I would have visited in a heartbeat. I sent the link to Brian Lye, in hopes that he sees what a positive impact he has had on the country and skateboarding as a whole. Much love...greetings from Iceland. Hey yo Rashid that 180 shuvit grab transfer you did was hella sick man. I always love seeing when people watch a skater do cool tricks for the first time in their lifes and see just how amazed they are and how hype they get when crazy tricks are being done right in front of them. It reminds me of when i saw it for the first time. Like when i watched hokus pokus (80s H-street skatevideo) for the first time and i was like wow! I want to do that! It really is magical. It was the same for me when i saw He-Man or something simular but it was within my grasp and actually possible to do so i got so excited that one day i was going to be doing that... and i did except for turning pro and being at the same top level but you know what i mean. Every skater knows this feeling and remembers watching skatevideos before going outside all hyped out to the max and driving some neighbours crazy by visiting every single corner of the neighbourhood scouting for new spots. If it was skateable we tried to skate it..even if it was only 3 broken stairs right by their frontdoor..or backdoor...or behind closed gates 🤠🥳😎 good times...that started like 30 years ago and i still get hyped when just seeing something simple butnreally steezy..the sounds of the wheels , then the pop and perfect landing. Thats aahhhhh
