Building My 28 Foot Sailboat for Long Term Cruising and Living Aboard - Project Triton EP4

Ойын-сауық

Journal of refitting a 1963 Pearson Triton sailboat for liveaboard and cruising. This is part 4 of Project Triton.
The Pearson Triton was designed by Carl Alberg at the request for a 28-foot sailboat that sleeps four. It became one of the first fiberglass auxillary sailboats built in the United States. The Triton is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass. The design was inspired by the lines of the traditional Scandinavian Folkboat. It has a spooned raked stem, a raised transom, a keel-mounted rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed long keel.
The Pearson Triton 28 has made at least two circumnavigations and several other Atlantic and Pacific crossings.

This video focuses on the process of building an outboard motor engine well for a 28-foot sailboat for long-term cruising and living aboard. I start by removing various hardware and cleats from the boat to prepare for the installation. There are advantages of installing an outboard motor well.
Cutting the boat for the motor well begins with marking the centerline and calculating dimensions based on it. I use an angle grinder with a steel cutting disc to make the cutout for the engine well.
Removing hardware and components from the boat, such as exhaust pipes, wiring, and ventilation hoses, proves to be a dirty and challenging task.
I also remove stanchions, repair cracks in the deck, and address issues with screws and winches.
I face challenges with removing the gas tank and considers removing an ice box lid for practicality.
The episode concludes with plans to continue tearing out old components and beginning the rebuilding process in the next video.
Thanks for watching 🙂

You could replace the A4 (which is an explosion waiting to happen) with an electric. Elecrics can also recharge the battery bank under sail power. To late now, but back in the day, we had an inboard diesel on a 30' sailboat. We had to discipline ourselves to motor enough to keep it in shape. Too late now, but.....

I was not trying to be negative at all - replacing the A4 is a great idea - however you go about it. Can't wait to see the outcome.

“Explosion waiting to happen.” Yep, I’ve owned my A4 powered Pearson Triton since 1962 - and the engine only blows up every other week or so. No big deal. 🙄

To answer your question: Fuel tank is normally removed and installed through a removable panel in the bulkhead behind the galley cabinet once it is removed. Best wishes.

From my perspective as a nearly life long sailor, mainly on the ocean. Going from an inboard engine to an outboard converts the boat from a potential passage maker to a sheltered water cruiser. In your situation based on how you have said you want to use the boat, I would definitely looked for a boat with an inboard diesel, or in the worst case an inboard Atomic 4. If I bought a boat with an Atomic 4, I would have made sure I had the budget to rip the gas engine out and put in a new diesel - likely a Beta Marine since they make a drop in replacement for the Atomic 4. Yeah that would have cost $10K+, but it would be worth it. You will regret going to an outboard.

Look up Atom Voyages, who circumnavigated twice in a Pearson Triton outfitted with an outboard just like this. He has now converted several boats and has detailed information on his website about the pros and cons. Perhaps 40 years ago an inboard would be the best option but today’s modern 4 stroke outboards like the Sailpro are designed for this purpose. With a built in alternator, internal and external fuel tank, providing 5+ knots, freeing up space and creating an aft locker, being able to turn the shaft for aft thrusting ability, lower maintenance and replacement cost, eliminating engine heat from the cabin, moving fuel fumes out of cabin, …. The benefits of an outboard surpass the benefits of an inboard. Just because something is the way it has always been done doesn’t mean it should continue to be done that way.

@@TrailguidePictures I base my comment on having owned both inboard and outboard powered boats. From my limited perspective of 60 years of sailing experience, the big negatives of an outboard are as follows: 1) If you find yourself having to motor into big chop, you will also often have the outboard out of the water which will make it very difficult to make headway. 2) A five horse outboard is severely under powered for a boat the size and weight of a Triton. Yeah, you can manage 5 knots on flat water, but if there is a head wind or chop you will be going SLOW. 3) Gas outboards are much less fuel efficient than inboard diesels and you are quite limited to how much tankage you can have. A portable tank like you have is about 6 gallons, which is not much on a passage where you might need to motor for 30-50 hours. 4) You have to have gas on the boat. Gas is much more explosive than diesel and a correspondingly bigger hazard. 5) That 5 horse 4 stroke motor has very small passages in the carburetor which will plug up after not too many hours unless you run ethanol free gas. Cleaning the carb on that motor requires and ultrasonic cleaner. 6) the outboard and its prop are not matched to the boat, which will make for less efficient motoring. and 7) on a passage, if you hit any rough weather a lot of water will get into the compartment where the outboard is and the engine will get very wet. If you are on salt water the entire engine will get salt encrusted. In that case you may find that things like the alternator do not work. Incidentally, the 6 amp alternator on that motor isn't much use for battery charging if you use more than minimal power. One other thing. The tank you have is a ABOVE decks tank. Locating the tank where you have requires an exhaust blower fan at the very least and is likely illegal in the states. I don't know how Transport Canada feels about it. You will be OK if the tank is in the open cockpit, but not in a closed compartment where a leak of spill drains inside the boat.
