Building Bumblebee the REAL TRANSFORMER #4 | James Bruton

Ғылым және технология

Paramount asked me to build a real transformer that turns from a life-sized car into #Bumblebee. Check it out all together and operational in this video when we surprise a parking attendant, along with a quick overview from myself and Kyla about the machine!

@Aaack Aardvark Yeah, and perhaps come up with a better solution for the hood than having it just... Pop off. Doesn't quite fit what you'd expect of a transformer. But it's an amazing result, all things considered...

True.. although some of the "critique" comments may be true in ways, people seem to forget how much time and effort goes into stuff like this. Im building a robot dog myself, 3 months and approx 90 pc hours in, and its not even fully assembled and/or modelled yet. So kudos on your work, Kyla and James👍

Thanks everyone for your responses of which the majority have been positive :) Yes, there are 'improvements' that could be made, but for Bumblebee to work at this scale and in this configuration, we had to make some conscious decisions. This included scaling down his arms and hands so that they would fit inside the car, and not adding the additional cosmetics panels that had been made for his abdomen incase he became too heavy to stand or they got in the way of the mechanisms. What we achieved was the best possible balance of look vs function we could manage given the time and resources we had :)

This was part of Paramount's marketing campaign. The project is done unless they decide to make a sequel, and then maybe they'll spring for a more realistic looking Bug upgrade. It would have been nice to see the hood dealt with more gracefully, but it's still pretty impressive for basically a two-person team. Doesn't really have much use other than as a marketing stunt, though. If they do this again, I'd like to see them start from a mold of an actual VW Beetle's exterior and work backward from there.

Hey James, as always, I'm impressed with the mechanical work, and Kyla did a great job on the head and painting. I think the one thing I wasn't a big fan of was the faceted/flattened body panels. It would have been cooler to have taken "splashes" off of a real vintage Beetle to make molds from which fiberglass or plastic body panels could have been made, preserving the original shape of the car and making it look convincingly like an actual old car when folded up. Anyway, nice work overall and congrats on getting to work with a company like Paramount. If you do anything like this again, though, I hope you devote a little more effort to getting the exterior form more faithful to the source. The hood (or bonnet) popping off is understandable, but with a bigger budget and perhaps more time, you could totally deal with that more gracefully, too. There is nothing in the laws of physics preventing it from happening is what I'm saying, but it would definitely involve a rather complex mechanism.

Honestly the mechanics are amazing but some of the panels like the Bonet don’t fit together very well however the small parts like the arms and head look absolutely amazing. Also when the car is not transformed it looks sort of depressing and droopy but other than that and the fact that i think the arms are to short and thin which I’m guessing is due to the extra weight and unbalance they would cause the project is great

I think the occasional negative comments on this one can all be covered by the phrase "There wasn't time". James usually builds projects over several months (And sometimes over more than a year). He'll design it, Build it, Break it, Redesign it, rebuild it, rethink it, Upgrade it, Then when everything works, finish it. They were both building their own sections of it at the same time, And that's bound to lead to compromises so as not to force the other person to completely redo something they've been working on to make it work with what you've done. If James had time to really go to town on the mechanical side before the whole project was handed over to Kyla to skin it I'm sure it would have looked a lot more realistic as a car. As it stands, it's pretty stunning work considering the compressed time frame available.
