Building BIG - Wood Framed RC Model L-1011 Airliner | Part 3 - Empennage

The long awaited part 3 of the wood framed RC L-1011 Scale Model Airliner Kit is finally here. Working with the ply wood that was cut on my laser machine makes assembly easy and precise.
In this RC build episode, I assemble my own CAD designed airliner tail section's wooden frame complete with 3D Printed Molds for the Rudder and S-Duct, engineering grade composite 3D printed parts, and Carbon Fiber Casting with Epoxy Resin using the molds to create the light wight duct for the plane's iconic engine number two and the rudder.
This section of the model has been a big challenge, from the weeks of CAD design work to testing printing parts, different FDM filaments and creating countless prototypes. There were some interesting engineering challenges as well regarding the actuation of the rudder and its servo placement. The biggest challenge was the horizontal stabilizer (Stabilator on the L-1011) and ensuring 100% synchronized movement. This was accomplished with the use of drive shafts, U-Joints, and precision ball bearings. In this video, the drive shafts for the stabilator were printed from nylon with a stainless steel core, however, upon further testing, the shafts in the production airplane kit will be milled from aluminum which will prevent premature wear on the shafts which could introduce slack.
A final note. Using the laser makes the wood working part easy, but there are still some tweaks that need to be made. This build is rooted in the traditional model airplane construction where you're working with plywood and balsa wood to meticulously cut out each part. Using my 100w laser makes the process of framing and joining much faster and more precise. A modern twist on an "old" school building style.

Thank you to FrSky for providing these for this build!
The frame is made of 3mm birch ply wood which was laser cut on my 100 watt CO2 laser.
The 3D printed parts were printed using the Raise 3D Pro2 and are made from the following materials:
- The black parts seen in this episode are printed out of carbon fiber nylon for durability and rigidity.
- Taulman 910 alloy was used for the pins and stabilator horn. (This will be swapped out in production for milled aluminum parts)
Featured in this build are the FrSky HV5403 & BLS5405H servos

Holy cow Terrance, you've come a long way. I've been in the R/C hobby 3 decades now and you're doing the L1011 justice. It's refreshing to see how an engineer would go about building an R/C model and you clearly do things a bit differently. It's like Skunkworks for R/C.

@@RCCAD2VR I can only imagine the tribulations with 3D printing the moulds for the Carbon Fiber, joining them, dealing with warpage, then the actual layup, and vacuum bagging and the heat from the epoxy affecting the moulds.

@@RCCAD2VR Oh yeah, in the 70s it was very advanced at the time, in design, construction, and sound. It is my opinion as an aerospace engineer. Lockheed has always built the most technologically advanced aircraft available. Unfortunately, they've never figured out how to make money doing so. And Lockheed should design them, Boeing should build them, and Douglas should market them. Sorry to go on so long. With respect to your beautiful model, take care of the weight of the tail, you can even design the ductwork, smaller for a smaller engine, it has always been like that. the wing motors had more thrust than the rear engine.. regards

Foamies are certainly much more accessible for people. The foamy build videos seem to be geared more to the casual consumer and product reviews side of the hobby. Finding build videos in the genre are a little more difficult to come by than in carpentry, or school bus conversions for instance. I'm doing my best to help add to the mix. Nice to know the work I'm doing appreciated by folks that understand! Thank you!!

@@RCCAD2VR obviously, I don’t expect the average Joe to tackle a project like this😂 What happened to airplane KITS? Ya know, balsa and ply? Sad really. Not knocking those into foamies but if some can’t fix anything unless they can use packing tape or 5 minute epoxy. I enjoy foamies too. Absolutely. But I will always prefer actual kit builds.

Oh mama! After months of waiting, the third video is here at last! What a complicated tail section with so many things cramped there but you resolved it with an amazing design skill. I hope you cover the stabilator in carbon fibre as it will take inmense loads. I am a bit worried about being only one servo for the whole stabilator, ever if it is a monster of a servo. I take for granted you will put three engines on it (as it should be) but ducties or real power turbines 😎😎😎? Anyway, good luck with it and I am looking forward to the next episode.

😃 Thanks for being patient. It's been a bit of a rough go, but getting back on track and have made much more progress. The wings are pretty much done, I just need to get the video made for it. The total time to design and build this section took just shy of 2 months. Many, Many tests and prototype parts were needed to get to this point. The molds alone took 13 days to 3D print and prepare for casting. I've considered dual servos for the stab but didn't want to add extra weight in an all ready weighty area. The BLS5405H should be more than up to the job. Mine will be EDF powered, however, several buyers said they will be going with turbines. Still debating on the final covering for the stabs, CF is a good option. Thanks for watching!

It will hang proudly in the shop as soon as I wrap up the wings.
