Building Ambient Modular "The Spell is Cast"

The Spell is Cast - an epic modular improvisation by Gary P Hayes
Minor shuffling a few things around in my rack to get to a more refined balancing of sounds and two modules added - the Erica quad vca2 and also was very keen to get the QuNexus sequencers sync'd to my rack so the Pams Expander PPEX1 provides midi clock out and more usefully eight more standard clocks (for sequencers etc:) freeing up the main 8 clocks for more exotic duties. I lost a few things like the dual VCA, the Doepfer noise/random, 2HP filter etc: - This piece more focused around bringing layers in and out using slow LFOs on the four VCAs.

notes from the opening minutes of the video below:
Hi. QuNexus tracks1/2 goes to Disting EX Piano Multisample using midi ch1
Also QuNexus CV for Track 1 goes to TwinWaves, with fold & VCA2 modulation
The Erica Quad VCA (top middle) is used to LFO mix four sounds, using slow OCHDs
VCA ch4 is the Doepfer MiniSynth bass, Cm rand notes from Pams 6 with PWM mod
Switched QuNexus tr2 for piano seq. QuNexus is now midi clocked from Pams PPEX1
Mix & VCA3 is 2HP Pluck, seq by a growing range of notes from Moskwa top left
2 O&C Euclideans sent to PicoDrums into Mix & VCA 1 - useful to get piano seq going
QuNexus tr2 7/8 piano seq start, I have it set to cycling octaves
Also note the top right FXAidXL is in slow LFO dry/wet cycling throughout, for variety
QuNexus tr3, is midi ch3 to PolyCinematic, also stereo 'fripp' looped (red lights bot right)
There is sync delay on the first four Mix / VCA channels. PCinematic set to super saws
As well a decaying loops I also record here a small seq for PC to QuNexus track 3
The reason to sync QuNexus to Pams Pro is to do live sequence changes throughout
OK time to build the piece and balance the constantly varying LFO mix of four layers
Erica Quad VCA2 is great for varying the balance hands off (as well as special things!)
Ornament & Crime top mid is also an EG for the bass into VCA, for smooth entry/exits
Having piano & synth voice (TwinWaves) on QuNexus tr1 is great for melodic solos too
Just captured a seq onto QuNexus tr1 low piano and simul twinwaves sound
Will lets the piece develop now, and it gets big later!

Gorgeous composition. The voice choices, sequences, evolving layers and melodic snippets are really amazingly put together. The piano sample and playing add a great deal throughout. Thank you again Gary for an inspirational piece.

Your timing is impeccable. Just doing a pull-down and re-wiring on my rack (headphones/trigger/audio cables and lighting) and this piece was sooooooo nice to listen to (more than once) while doing this menial chore.

Cheers again Phil and good luck on the rearrangement - I often find I arrange modules depending on my 'flow' and what ideally sits close to something else that is often patched together but, then your flow style changes and off one goes again! That said my rack here has been pretty static for over a year so that's a good thing!

How many hours a week do you reckon you are fiddling with synths?

Thanks for the lovely comment - yes this piece took about 35 minutes to carefully patch over morning coffee, then later that morning 30 minutes to record / produce. Editing and upload took about an hour incl patch notes ... I do one or two productions a week ... I will let you do the sums on that one ... generally avoid fiddling unless learning a new module for a production ...
