Building a Yew Recurve Bow in Silence

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Building a recurve self bow out of yew wood with the use of hand tools. The bow ended up drawing 60lb at 28" - excactly what I was aiming for. Need to practice a bit to be able to use its full potential. But love it already!

    Your videos are so inspiring to me. I have only started making bows in the last year. Out of the 7 bows that I have made, only this last one has survived without breaking. I always find myself going back to your videos to see if I have missed something or can learn any new tricks that might be useful. Thanks, and keep up the great work.

    Beautiful bow!! but to me it looks like you never pulled the bow back to a full draw. You got to what i would consider maybe 3/4 of a full draw and released. I’m no expert though, and I suppose it’s possible that you have a unique shooting style. I would love to see how it holds up to being pulled all the way back to a full draw though,I’m just curious about the performance of that cherry wood. Oh well it obviously functions for you so that’s really the most important part.

    This is Yew wood not Cherry. Beautiful work out of much rarer wood. Having the right sapwood is essential and is not found on every single Yew.

    Great bow and video. I want to get into using steam, whether I get back into bows or make a 3-ply banjo pot ow two. I only got into a hybrid recurve/longbow level of minor recurve (reflex/deflex) and even then I only bent by way of a form and laminating multiple layers together and they stayed like that. Steam forming is something I've always wanted to try. So many things can be done from furniture to snowboards. Cool, man! P.S. I also never did an all-natural bow other than a plain, straight longbow (I did put some reflex in one with heat alone that helped harden the back, but never got the propeller curve out no matter how much I compensated). I love the carving around knots and features to make the natural rugged look. I saw it in the Bowyers Bible and have been thinking about doing it on a flute.

    I have a question. Since you basically took half of the log and made the bow wouldn't it have been better to split the log in half so you could have made two bows from one piece of wood instead of chopping half the log in small pieces and throwing it away?

  • @DreamcraftBows

    Dopiero zaczynam z tworzeniem łuków i mam pytanie. Jak każdy początkujący wolę zacząć od miękkiego drewna więc wybrałem leszczynę. W połowie września sciąłem pień o średnicy 7/8cm i położyłem do suszenia w ogrzewanej piwnicy.

  • @DreamcraftBows

    @DreamcraftBows

    Жыл бұрын

    Myślę, że pęknięcia nie powinny być widoczne po odcięciu takiej ilości materiału, ale to zależy od stopnia spękania. Zazwyczaj wystarczy odciąć 10-20 cm. Jest takie ryzyko, aby ochronić drewno od spękania zalecam zalakierowanie końców pniaka.
