Building a Stormtrooper: Thigh sizing and construction

Size, trim and assemble Stormtrooper or Sandtrooper thighs!
*Note: please watch the "Bicep: Trimming and sizing / Construction" videos before watching the subsequent videos for the other limbs.
The detailed principles in the Bicep videos are used in the rest of the armour assembly videos. The following videos contain some time lapse footage to make the videos more concise.*
=====
In this video, I trim and size the inner and outer thigh armour and tape the parts together to test fit them on the costumer.
Before you trim any plastic, it's best to wear your under suit and test fit the armour on yourself before you do any trimming.
I usually leave about 3/16" of return edge plastic around the thigh tops, so that the armour looks like it has some thickness to it. Some people trim much of the return off for comfort but the originals did have some return edges.
The lower part of the thighs I leave about the same amount of return, but make sure to round off the return on the corners to prevent cracking etc. Sand these areas and round off sharp edges to prevent "armour bites".
Thighs traditionally used 20mm cover strips on the front of the thighs and the back of the thighs used 25mm cover strips. These measurements are approximate, see whitearmor.net for more info.
I will cover the left thigh ammo strip attachment in a separate video.

Hi there, I like what you have done with "two" people; but how do you size your armor with only "ONE" person? Also the same goes for the abdominal and chest pieces.

Hi panda props!! Loving the videos... I'm building my own AM 2.0 suit now... finished everything you've covered thus far.. I think I've also seen your posts on white armour too. Any chance you're going to continue on with the chest, abs and kidney plates too? Thanks so much for your videos, without I wouldn't of had the courage to make the first cuts... not so many resources here in Australia to follow... Look forward to seeing the next parts being constructed

When clamping armour you want to put abit of material on the clamp claw so that way you don't mark your armour.

Not really. Most clamps are plastic and won’t leave a mark. Besides, you should wear your scuffs and scrapes with pride. It won’t stay shiny forever :)

how much return edge did you keep on these thighs? I currently have 10mm and am considering going to 5mm for more room.

ReHi's Panda! Hey I'm stuck on a couple things. The Thighs and Shins. I noticed you had a nice Tutorial on the Thighs, but no tutorials on sizing the Shins or Calves. On both I'm unsure on splitting the difference cuts, on the shins I'm more limited with that in that there's not much meat at the bottoms with which to do so. I am so nervous on both these cuts. With the thighs I think there is a certain area or region they want you to cut (at least with the RS KIT but I'm still unclear on it. These rear cuts are so awkward and difficult for just one person to pencil mark. It'd be so easy to get wrong. Love your work man.

I’ve filmed one for the calves but I haven’t edited it yet. When you refer to the bottom cuts do you mean the notches at the knees for flexibility?

@@pandapropsncostumes the part that wraps around your boots. There's not a whole lot left to cut. I don't have fat legs, more toned so I'm attempting to remove more material towards to upper calf than the bottom boot/ankle. Yet keep a straight centered line up. So do I split the difference at the top and draw a crooked line down? I am so worried and concerned with fitting these shins and thighs. Same thing going on with the thighs. I've also found with the calves that the inner and outer don't match at the back (at the top where your knees are). I'm talking with RS about this as well.

@@pandapropsncostumes Do you know any good sites on how to torso pieces should sit on body? IE front chest plate, should the bottom sit at bottom of rib cage? I am 5'8" and trying to make sure it doesn't look like I am wearing my dad's armor.

Michael Rose The ab and kidney when joined should sit on your hips. The bottom of the chest should sit above the ab button box. I’ll try to get back to the torso video as soon as I can :)

@@pandapropsncostumes Thank you. I am only 5'8". I am just wondering if I am going to have to trim down any of the torso pieces to fit my frame. Like the ab plate sit on hips, but should the top sit below bottom of rib cage? I am trying to figure out how to make armor look proportional to my size. I appreciate you answering questions from your old video posts.

Michael Rose Don’t worry about where the top sits. Connect the kidney to the abdomen, then connect the kidney to the butt. Then strap the butt to the cod. Try the torso on and the adjust the butt to crotch strap so that the butt hugs your butt and the crotch hugs the crotch :) a lot of people have their cod sitting too low, it needs to hug your crotch. The top of the an will sit where ever it need to sit. Lay the chest armor on top so that the bottom of the chest sits above the an box, ideally an inch or so away. There “should” be enough room for your neck / neck seal. If you have a standard armor make and it is screen sized, it should fit you fine. I’m just under 5 foot 9 and standard armor fits me just fine.
