    Thanks, nice video. My great great grandfather was Lakota. My grandfather taught me much. I knapped arrowheads, built bows and arrows, speared and fished and trapped since a small boy. I built a wikiup in northern vermont, usa on a beaver lake in the 1980's. I lived in it most of the winter while trapping. For insulation, I put a plastic tarp over the framework, covered with some hemlock bows. I then purchased 5 bales of straw from a nearby farmer. I fluffed the straw over the entire shelter. It was more than 2 feet thick. I then put a plastic sheet over the top which came to a coule feet above the ground. I then covered with more hemlock bows and then brush and leaves. The walls were abour 4 feet thick when finished. I built an igloo type entrance with sheep skin doors at each end. A gas lantern kept it so warm that even when the temp was -20 some nights I didn't need a jacket. Every year, more leaves would cover it and it blended in perfectly with the surroundings. This wikiup lasted me 6 years, until the land was sold. Who knows, it may still be there as it just looked like part of the hill.

    Lilly, My quickest shelter from scratch, is based upon the Plains Lakota sweatlodge frame of willow saplings, butt ends dug into the ground in a circle, then bent and tied in place. Unlike a sweatlodge, I use plastic tarps to cover it, (to shed the P.N.W. rain) rather than the traditional Bison hides or wool blankets. Once done with frame and cover, I dig a "trench" of about 2' depth, (saving the excavated dirt for later) and wide enough for a "bed". Then outside, I heat up rocks, to be placed in the trench, and covered with the saved dirt or sand.This is the base for whatever bedding that I have on hand, (I favor wool "trappers blankets" or a bedroll). Makes for a quick, snug, trappers camp, when I'm traveling light on the move through back country in the American west, or Alaska.

    Good job on the shelter. I am sure you are aware that more material is needed to block all daylight coming through the shelter. These shelters are very time consuming and much materials needed, so I respect the amount of work you put into it. It really depends on the type of environment and weather, on how much debris is needed on the outside. I live in Alberta, Canada where temperatures can dip to -30 all the way to -60 Celsius. I would need minimum 2 feet thick of debris around my shelter in those conditions.

  • @Tossdart

    @Tossdart

    Not really on the 2 feet. Just a nice tarp & fire inside :). Of course more insulation won't hurt but spent some nice nights in my yukon tent before I loaned it & got it back rotten. At home cutting spruce is fine city did you know? I try not cutting anything live I don't actually need. People often cut black spruce or tamarac not even thinking they are several hundred years old. No for me some fall down, tarp in a tipi will do.

    HI there from CANADA. Thank you for the laughter. Well actually it was the dogs ability to pull down a tree faster than you could saw. folding saw for cutting green limbs without damaging the tree, and an axe for making pegs, knocking dead branches off your main poles, etc. both have uses and both are incredibly useful for shelter making. thats why she bothered, hope this answers your question.

    ***** If you're coming under snow conditions or it's just getting dark and you're looking for shelter, you can bed down on the ground with only leaves covering you as long as the leaves come from top of the decayed ones. Pile them up high and quickly under the limbs of evergreen trees and against the trunk and borough deep under them from the trunk side. Always enter and exit at the trunk. The snow will provide insulation. For me as soon as I get comfortable I have the urge to pee. lol

    beta11554 Survival in bad or when serious weather is approaching etc ,needs fast reactions and fast shelters to build/find/improvise, not things like this. It was a good video but I would not have labeled it survival. One should expend as little energy as needed do these things unless you know you are getting rescued or self rescue is imminent JMHO based on being involved in S and R and several survival situations, including both finding shelter and water in a hurry. But as she says, she always carried these tools with her and that is smart and I do to when I'm in the wilds.

    Bush Camping Tools Hi, as your name says, it's camping not survival. You bring anything you want or think you will need. And I agree with you, FAST reactions. Not walking around looking for that nice piece of wood to burn. Night is coming on and it's raining. Shelter comes first, in my experience and just my opinion. Cheers

    Why do you feel the need for women in your area to be like her? How would that affect you as a person? I mean being outdoorsy is great and all but I dont feel sad that men and women around me are not outdoorsy. I dont really care either way as it does not affect me. Do you feel the same about men? Or is it just girls because you wanna fuck them?

    @TNTsquadHQ That was a bit strange reasoning in my opinion. Not shovel as shovels out of the shop looks today (obviously), but what do you know about how they dug back in the days? So they may have used a stick to dig with: still a kind of shovel. The thing is "digging" then, not how exactly they dug. So they didn't have the same ready made ropes (obviously), but were they able to make string or something doing the same job out of natural materials? I would guess so. Anyway, I don't think Lilly made any claims here of using authentic tools or methods, just wanted to practice and test the general concept of the hut itself.
