Building a Log Home in the Canadian Wilderness (Pt.3)

Ойын-сауық

This is the third installment of the log home building series. In this episode I finish the remaining walls and build the door frame.
Thank you to everyone who watches.
FAQ is below, but feel free to ask me any questions you have in the comments below.
FAQ:
Where does this video take place?
Alberta, Canada. I am building this log home on a plot of private land I have permission to be on. The location is about an hour drive from any developed area. The hike to get to my log home is about 6 km.
Are there dangerous animals in this area?
Yes. This area is home to black bears, grizzly bears, wolves, cougars, and coyotes.
Do I carry anything to protect myself from these dangerous animals?
No. In the summer months I carry bear spray, but in the winter the spray would freeze.
What were the sounds at night?
Wolves. A nearby pack of wolves began howling while I was getting ready to go to sleep.
Was I scared or worried?
No, the howls were locating howls (used to communicate between the wolves). They weren't being aggressive or moving closer to my location, so I was happy to sit and listen to them without any sense of worry.
What kind of tarp do I use?
It's a homemade waxed cloth tarp measuring 6' X 6'. It's a small tarp, but it does the trick. I plan to make a new one soon that is a bit bigger. I will film the process and make a video on it.
What hatchet, saw, and knife do I use?
Hatchet - unknown (it was bought at an antique store for 8$ and it has no makers mark).
Saw - Bahco 21" peg tooth saw blade. Wood frame is made by me. I have a video on how I made the saw, here's the link: • Video
Knife - Helle Sigmund
How cold was it on this trip?
Not very cold. During the first day it was 5 degrees Celsius. Over night the temperature dropped to -10 degrees Celsius.
What is my sleeping setup?
Two queen sized 100% wool blankets, a foam insulating sleep pad, and a rubberized ground sheet.
Why do I cut down trees?
All the trees I cut down were dead-standing. Dead-standing trees are usually quite dry, which is desirable for building material and firewood. Cutting down these dead trees does not negatively impact the environment; it actually promotes new growth within the forest.
How big is the log home I am building?
It measures about 8' x 8' at the base, and the peak is about 10 feet or so off of the ground. This size will allow me to have a bed inside, along with a fire to stay warm.

Your videos have encouraged me to get back out to enjoy the outdoors after a long and painful set back with Crohns Decease. I was very nervous getting back to hiking. Just as I got started with hiking and small fort building for over nighters in the Smokey’s with permission from friends with property there, my wife passed away of Cystic Fibrosis. So Just when I thought I’d not wanna Camp after her death, I realized I was alone already and the quietness of not hearing her machines running or her voice was to load to bare. Knowing I could go back to the sounds of the woods was overwhelmingly peaceful. So thank you again for posting your videos. Sincerely, Tom

Many of us have grown up imagining our little cabin in the woods. Some of us made them as kids. For me it was a prairie dugout, which served me well until I left for college and it fell in. You’re making yours now, and sharing it with all of us. Build it. Let it bring you joy. Because it should. Be well, and take good care, as always, from here in the Allegheny National Forest, in Northwest Pennsylvania.

Picked up on your comment about your wool blanket. Would like to give some info about keeping warm and cutting down on the weight you have to carry. Dept of Defense personnel are issued nylon camouflage poncho liner to place inside sleeping bags. If you've never tried one, give it a go. The amount of body heat it retains is unbelievable. Unlike a wool blanket it is extremely light weight and if it gets wet, moisture dissipates rapidly. To obtain heat in your log structure, a roll of thick plastic wrapped on the lower portion of structure will maintain a lot of heat. As a retired Marine, I've been "camping" a lot during my career and just wanted to pass along a few things that worked for me. Please don't take myu comments as criticism.

I have some money to buy land , not much, but Offgrid, un serviced land can be bought cheaply in some parts of Canada. But I’m disabled, can’t build a house. Anyone want to partner with me? I Could buy some acres, other person can build an Offgrid log cabin For themselves. Build some kind of shelter for me to move eventually (wouldn’t be for a long time). Or anyone have some money to put towards land? Eg 320 acres for sale at moment but I’m £15,000 short.

Having grown up in Alaska, camping and hunting both summer and winter, wolves usually avoid people. Bears also avoid being seen if possible. At least that is how it is in the interior outside of the parks. There is no hunting in the parks, and that is usually where people are attacked, as those bears haven't learned to avoid human contact.

I would love to do the things that you do I long to be in the woods all the time away from daily caused by PTSD just to sit by the fire just to know that I can be closer to God when there are no distractions. But it is harder for someone like me I know there are women who can go out and do these things on their own but I have always been a house wife, nurse and have always been shut-in. Now that I'm alone the woods are the only place I long to be. But I question myself can I do this by myself. Am I strong enough, fearless enough . To stay overnight building fires I don't think I could kill anything but I guess you never know till you try thank you for your channel it truly soothes my mind I'm living vicariously through you

Music, it the language of creation and/or nature. A melody of vibrations creating the perfect harmony, the wolves sounded like they were singing in harmony at one point, very beautiful to listen to.
