Building A Guitar Neck - Making A Guitar From Scratch Part 2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is the second installment of my series on building a guitar from scratch. This video covers how I built the neck and fretboard of this guitar. I think it's important to note that this series is not a "how-to" on guitar building. There are far more experienced luthiers than myself who could better teach guitar building. This series is simply a lighthearted and fun documentation of how I'm attempting to make a guitar starting from the tree. I hope you all enjoy! God bless you!

Peter .....you had the idea in front of you all this time ! To cut your Truss Rod channel is more like the same as the Boxed JIG you build to side the RADIUS BLOCK ! Only this time you assemble the 2 side woods a bit closer for to glide your router over them and build 2 extra side woods a step higher so the router keeps aligned same like you did when doing the fretboard radius ! Next time you will have the satisfaction of knowing that the job was perfectly done like the pro luthiers do them !! Just love the passion you have of doing this luthier craftsmanship!!! Thanks for posting these videos ! Keep them coming !

I have found the easiest way for me to route the truss rod channel, is to do it while the neck blank is still a rectangle. I run it on the router table against the fence. Looks like a fun build! Enjoy!

I definitely saw that you made a few rookie mistakes during the body and the neck build, however that’s how we learn. I’ve been building custom electric guitars for about 15 years now and I remember making those mistakes when I first started, so no big deal. I do have 4 EVH guitars that I’ve built in the past and I know from experience that it’s a really fun guitar to build so have fun. P.s good luck with the paint job. Lol I had to sand my first EVH paint off a couple of times and start over.

Hello Peter, I am glad that you are built this guitar, it is exactly what I am looking for, how to build Edie Van Halen's guitar. Did you happen to make a list of the thing one would need if one want to build a guitar and what pick-up does it go with this guitar? I am going to build the whole guitar with Rose-Wood. Did you finish? I hope you can tell me what I need. Thank you and have an awesome day.

GOOD JOB. It's always been my dream to build my own guitar. I just don't have enough space in my garage for woodworking (my wife is a glass artist and she spreads fragile stuff all over). I am looking to make my FrankenStrat look more like a strat. Namely, move the input jack to the front rather than the bottom. How did you do that (if you did)? I think I can manage to make the carving for the Boat jack but it'd be nice to see it done at least once on video.

if you're spending hundreds on tools it might be best to just buy a prebuild neck that has better construction

This was a bit painful to watch. 🙂 Kudos for the work and effort! It's important to know steps in such a built. It's easier to install frets when the neck profile is not yet shaped so you have a flat chunk of surface beneath. Always glue the fretboard before installing frets. Also, cutting the fret slots when your fretboard is still flat makes it easier.

You should have given the disclaimer about not being a luthier and instead just being some dude trying to figure out how to build a guitar in your first video. A lot of people were looking to your video as a guide. You have some decent basic skills in woodworking (and a lot of expensive equipment helps) but you have a long way to go before anyone should be watching your videos to learn guitar making from. Keep up the practice though and do more research! Lots of books out there that answer the questions you’ve had and techniques you don’t know!
