    As you grew up from a baby and surrounded by all the gear in our house, you spent so much time asking me n yer mom 'how do you?' ... Now the tables have turned and we are scratching our heads looking at each other asking 'how did we produce such a beast?' ... in a loving way - of course ;-)

    if you use the "tape mode" in grain, you can use it to play back the samples without stretching - no need to use another sampler device. the benefit to this approach is, that f.e the envcs in grain as well as the modulation capabilities are of much higher quality than with the other samplers like nn19 or nnxt. also the filter in grain is way better than the one in the other samplers.

    Incredibly cool & useful tip. It seems so simple and obvious in retrospect since, as you say, Reason gives you the tools to answer these kinds of needs; but short videos like this to get you thinking about problems in the abstract really help transfer that knowledge to tackle future obstacles. Either way, I know what I'm going to be doing this evening. Thank you!

    Thanks Radd! I had intended to show at the end a device I'd made before Grain came out, that was basically a synth. But I ran out of time and had to get back to my actual work haha. But yeah, most things are possible in Reason. I sometimes forget that I can do more than just load sounds and sequence notes!

    Goddam it I wished I'd have found this method out a few months ago. Would have saved me endless hours of resampling drum kits through akaiser. However the fundamental principles of this are brilliant. So thank you so much for sharing! I can now template this and speed up production no end. Genius.

    That drum beat is sick, I got a habit of starting off the way you have here Paul with creating a combinator and then Line Mixer and what instruments I want. It's the main way to create customs sounds and settings and I've got this so down pat that in few seconds I have something cool started easy.

    This is a very cool way to use Grain, I have one question however; at about the 2:20 mark you make a comment that you can play it like a drum kit, and then we can see/hear a drum set being played... Does that mean you are playing each of the sounds by using the keyboard and triggering them that way, no other device is used to trigger the sounds being heard?

  • @PaulOrtiz

    @PaulOrtiz

    Stewart Robson Hey! Thanks :) yeah that’s right, it’s just played in with a MIDI keyboard.

  • @Funkspace

    @Funkspace

    There are various ways to trigger the grain drums, ranging from playing the keyboard to trigger the combinator’s Gran synths, or basic notes on a sequencer track in reason DAW, to using player devices, or using drum machines/rhythm sequencer rack devices such as Reason’s stock ReDrum if you feel like going old school and programming rhythms with its 808 style layout -in which case you’d flip the rack and connect the CV outs for each drum part on the ReDrum and connect them to the respective Grain Synth. The ReDrum doesn’t need to be connected to an output as a result since its being used for the rhythm programmer and doesn’t need to be heard itself. Each of the four Knobs on the combinator could be set up to alter multiple parameters on any of the Grain synths with start and end ranges. So a patch could have knobs that will alter the sounds dramatically each knob could focus on whole different sets of manipulations. And then all four knobs movements could be automated or recorded as a performance and perfected by editing the automation. It’s a powerful system.

    Is there anyway to do mute groups like in Kong with these samples in the combinator? I tried to use kong as to control these grain synths but mute groups didn't work.

  • @PaulOrtiz

    @PaulOrtiz

    4 жыл бұрын

    Very good question! The answer might be no? I’ll have a think about it but I think if you needed muting hats in a kit like this you might have to make them normal samples and use something like NNXT or anything else with muting.

    @@borisbagnara7678 Ahh okay yeah I see what you've done wrong; if you watch the video closely I'm putting the devices inside the combinator. You've just put them underneath, so they're not controlled by it. Make sure you've pressed "Show Devices" on the combinator. This will reveal an area where you can drag the devices and they'll be triggered by Combinator input. Let me know if you figure it out.
