Building a full sized 48" wooden wagon wheel from 2x6 and 2x4's!!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I have always wanted to build a full sized Halloween Hearse, but each time I wanted to build it, I kept hitting the same wall, buy the wheels, make the wheels from plywood or support the hearse from the underside. None of these appealed to me, so this is the result. These wheels are built like an old red river cart wheel, no metal banding needed just a really clever design that allows you to build a full sized wagon wheel that will hold weight!

    Can't wait to see your hearse build .. I cut all my wheels with a jigsaw what a pain but it was all out of 3/4 plywood.

    I had meant to mention that if you did not have the tools/want to build the full fledged wheel, cutting it out of plywood and laminating them is a good viable option, So I will make sure to pin your comment telling people to check out the plywood option on your hearse build! :) So please check of Monster Misfits video to see them (And an awesome hearse build) at kzread.info/dash/bejne/fadszc1siradmtY.html

    Great job. I have been looking for a good template for a while. The wheel looks great. I am making a covered wagon for a neighborhood thing I host every year.

    Mr Samhain you are an artist, I cant do this. I bought 4 wheels from a garden center. They are wood but meant for a garden display.

    I know the exact wheels you speak of! It was part of the reason I designed these, as I wanted to have a wood wheel that looked authentic and could still hold some weight so you don't have to support a prop from below when it is on wagon wheels. They are not meant for many kilometres of driving, but moving a prop around the yard is where these shine!

    This wheel IS the wheel deal, Samhain!💥😲👏👏👏 So there's no doubt that the complete hearse will be incredible! Even the doghouse is beautiful---with its stained glass windows.😄✌

    I'm starting to draw up plans for the hearse, just have to build 3 more of those pesky wheels! The stained glass in the doghouse has really held up well actually. It's been in there since I did the video and I have not yet had to touch it up! I know as I do videos, props of videos past will continue to make cameos! lol. Thanks for your support Fraidy and the video I mentioned on the Patreon is coming, but for some reason I had a sudden need to make a wagon wheel. lol

    As I have nowhere to store it, I'm sure I'll stash it away somewhere out of the weather! I'll move my graveyard from the side yard and just turn my house into a modern version of the Adams family.

    Actually, this one is more about the time. You need 3.5-2"x6"x8' (About $22 worth) and I think it was 2 - 2"x4"x8' ($7 worth) which comes out to about $29 in lumber for each wheel. There is the dowel pegs, glue and the such to purchase as well. But at around $35 per wheel, it's a great way to build a very authentic looking prop. :) Don't get me wrong, $140 for a whole wagons worth of wheels is not for everyone, but it's hard to find an alternative that's even close to a similar price for a load bearing wheel :). Thanks for watching @stuffyteddybare

    Lol, the shipping on those wheels would be killer! They weigh about 40lbs and are huge! I don't know if I will be building the other 3 this year, but I know I wanted to get this mental hurdle of the wheel build out of the way! The good news is this build inspired another idea which I will be building this year! Thanks for watching MM!

    I don't think I set the exact number you needed but you can calculate it pretty quickly just breaking down the instructions in the video. When you do buy the lumber buy extra to make room for potential mistakes and errors as this wheel is fairly complicated when it comes to a wooodworking project. Thanks for watching! -Samhain

    Are you planning to insert bearings in the hubs?

  • @SamhainPropworks

    @SamhainPropworks

    Ай бұрын

    Not really, these wheels are great for display purposes, and they will take the weight of whatever prop you put on the axle. A bearing would allow easier rolling but would be overkill as these wheels may hold up to a ton of use but they would need the metal band around the circumference to ensure the wheels holds up to many thousands of revolutions that a bearing allows. Regardless, I hope that helps! Thanks for watching :)

    Thank you for the quick response. Yes it makes sense that they won't be used as road going wheels. I was just thinking for cool factor, especially if raised off the ground and turned by hand. Thanks again for the great video and instructions 👍👍👍

    Can The template be adjusted to make a 36" Wheel? or do have Template for 36" size?

  • @SamhainPropworks

    @SamhainPropworks

    6 ай бұрын

    You know, I have been thinking on this. I am honestly not sure, the hard part will be finding the scale to reduce the template to have it print out at a 36" diameter. I have wanted to build a 36" wheel, but maybe I will at very least go build the template for it. I usually like to test and build anything that I create, but right now I am in the dead of winter and I won't be able to get outside to build one. Though the fact that the 48" design works, I'm pretty sure if I use the same principals I can make a 36" wheel. If I design a 36" plan, I put it up on my website and let you know! Thanks for watching.

    Ask and you shall receive! I spent a couple hours last night redesigning a 36" wheel. This is not a scaled version, but an exact matching version of the 48" wheel. Same hub size, same rim thickness. You can find it here samhain.ca/product/36-wagon-wheel-template-file/
