Building a DIY Overhead Camera Rig

We're building a DIY overhead camera rig for our new home studio/KZread filming room! If you attempt this project make sure you attach the rig into a stud. Very important, unless you want it to fall down... which you probably don't, that would suck. If you are using a heavier camera consider using a ball head or attachment that fastens the camera more securely to the friction arm.

Fantastic and looks neat. Could be a good idea to also tether the camera to the rig too. Would save camera from a distraction where the plate isn't on properly, etc. And maybe someone's head. Something like a short piece of Dyneema thin rope with a fixed loop on one end (like a figure of 8 on a bight) and a small karabiner on the other (anchor hitch attach). Loop over the rig bar, krab end through fixed loop and pull so attached to rig. The krab end, attach the karabiner to one of the strap camera lug rings. You could have 2, one for each side of the rig.

I literally just bought steel piping, nipples, and flanges yesterday from Home Depot! Making a sliding wall/door not an overhead rig, but now that you've mentioned it, looks like I need to get dressed and pick up some more pipe. The overhead I have been using is... held together with hope, dreams, and magic. I used Simple Green to take off the greasy dirt coating on the pipes. I kinda want to paint the pipes more black. But I can't decide if I just want to be lazy and accept the return on that time investment may not be worth it, or if I want to crank up my neurotic-ness and just do it. LOL! What's that sound? Oh yeah, my boyfriend deep sighing in the background again. Thanks for the tip guys!

9:32 "Frankensteined together". I'm working on a ceiling camera/light system for my garage, and my Frankenstein makes your setup look like something from the Jetsons. Black pipe jammed into an upside down piano stand. Super-clamps from my photography days, wires, wicked long carriage bolts (for 1/4" x 20tpi multitaskers), and gaffer tape. The next video is about dust collection, which can't help but reveal the setup-in-progress, so I'll probably go ahead and include a clip at the end. BTW... I just came across your channel this week. Your videos about your production process have been immensely helpful. You have also inspired me to bring my previous photography experience into future videos (as well as the unrecorded parts of the upcoming one), so I pulled out the 11 year old 5D mk II and am LOVING the change. Thank you for the inspiration as well as showing your processes. What mic do you use on your DSLRs? I plugged in a nice Sennheiser wireless lapel mic which works very well! But I'd be very interested to have one mounted to the camera.
