How To Design a Small Space YouTube Filming Backdrop
I polled you guys on instagram for questions about designing KZread filming spaces and the most common question was "How do you design a KZread filming background in a small space?" So I took a tiny corner of a bedroom and some scrap wood, and threw together a small corner! Also, answering your questions!

Loved the video! Great tips! If I may chime in, we should also consider how your videos are rendered by KZread. Gradients will suffer from heavy banding, so be mindful of lighting an empty backdrop or wall. And darker areas are compressed more heavily than brighter ones. So if you're going to go dark, don't use gradients, and fill your background with stuff to break up the effects of the KZread compression. Basically, the worst thing you can do for KZread is shoot in front of a big dark purple wall with a gradient. 🤓🤣🤦♂️

Thanks so much! Yesss that’s a great tip! You can totally see banding in that shot of Chris and I against the white background with the plants! Stuff with texture and layers definitely help!

Do any of us really deserve Gerald? I feel as though he just pops up on my feed with a video "Everything You Could Want to Know About (Insert Topic Here)" and I'm all like "Thanks, Gerald!" Now he's helping me on OTHER people's videos! Is there no end to his knowledge...?

I've noticed this annoying gradient effect. Anyone have tips on fixing?
Bonus tip: have blue hair to separate you from the background 👍🏻

Haha this was interesting!!
I appreciate that this is the design of the space and not “what (typically expensive) equipment you need for a full blown studio”.

This was one of the most pleasing looking videos I've ever seen. I wasn't even looking for this, it just popped up and I watched the whole thing because I was so mesmerised! I love how moody and dark your set-up is and yet there's a perfect amount of light to see you. And also your awesome hair just absolutely blends in perfectly with the whole look 👏
Perfect timing As the days are getting shorter I am realizing I can’t rely on window light as much during the winter and I’ll have to make a make shift setup! Thanks for the video! -Sarah
We just moved to Japan and I've been trying to figure out the "space" here and this was extremely helpful esp. cause your my go to in the design space.
Love it. Thanks for the great tips! Moving from a shooting space that had built in elements that gave depth, texture and tone (and tons of natural light, too) into a spare bedroom temporarily as I build out the new space (which is a 7x18 closet) I've been struggling to really nail my background and get the elements the previous space just 'had'. This also gives me a ton to consider when designing the new space from scratch. :)
This is so timely! I've resumed filming for my channel and I'm testing different backgrounds for photos. Thanks Becki!
Really great tips! Thank you for helping us all to overcome this challenge. I think many of us are all in a very similar place here, starting in a small space, but wanting a great looking space to represent our brand! I’m excited to implement some of these tips!
Becki, you're awesome! I was just re-watching the "home studio" video yesterday & have been trying to think of something for my very small bedroom; thanks for this!
I could literally listen to you talk about probably anyting your energy that you bring through your video intoxicatingly mesmerizing
Great to see what can be achieved in a small space with minimal props. I’m excited to see what I can create this weekend to record some more videos for my channel, thanks
THE video I need right now! Starting to film indoors now winter’s kicking in, and have a very small space to work with... top info, thanks! 😍
Thank you. I came looking for tips in setting up impromptu backdrops (so small budget/small space fits into the mold) and the basic technical stuff and the examples were very helpful, thank you! Thanks also for showing your past setups for folks like me who haven't been following.
This was perfect. Undergoing a “studio reno” (aka living room) currently and this was very useful!
This video is perfect!!! I just moved to a studio apt. in SF and I’m in the process of setting up a mini studio space and a workstation in my closet.
I don't think I've ever hit the subscribe button so fast before in my life.
I was struggling for like a 6 months of how to set up a formal or at least functional to record space. As usual, you have open my mind to knowledge. I'm starting rigth know. Thanks for always sharing! I love guys, keep rocking! Saludos y abrazos desde México!! 🖤🖤👌🏾
I absolutely love your voice for explaining things. Such perfect tempo and soft enough to digest information. :) Thank you!
Nice to stumble on this video. Technically excellent and very appealing to watch. But mostly impressed with how naturally at ease you are on camera and how likeable. Wish you much success.
I've been meaning to upgrade the quality of my content and holy heck - your videos are so immensely informative. You break it down so that even complete beginners can understand. This video alone taught me so many useful tips I want to shout lol THANK YOU!!
Thanks for all this useful content! Decided to start a youtube channel this year because of creatives like you guys! Definitely utilizing this info for creating youtube talking head videos moving forward! Appreciate it! 🙏🏽
I'm always drawn to a flat background too.. very Wes Anderson especially with layers and depth.
Again, love you! Such good info and your personality is the best.
Thank you so much! I'm just about to turn my home into a studio. Starting a vlog in January. I appreciate the help!
Super appreciated this one, I'm literally working on a video of "revamping and organizing" some of my desk/ studio space and now I can see if any of these tips can be implemented before I finish!
I loved this video! So helpful! First KZread video I’ve watched in a long time that I actually enjoyed! Thank you⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Boy, that’s great timing! Literally what I’m finishing up at this moment. My big struggle is lighting! Going to binge some of your other vids. Thx
This is such a perfect Video! Love the tips and the honesty in this piece. Nuggets of Wisdom dropped for sure. Thank you for being so transparent & real in your content. Taking a lot from this video going forward on my content. Salute for creating this and keeping us in line.
this is a very helpful video. love how you shoot and your style. keep up the great work!
This video is suuuuuuper helpful. Thanks, I never even thought about focusing on skin tones to help pick colors. Thank you!

Got you!!!
Great video Becki, your a G at setting up those small studio spaces! So glad I found your channel! Thank you thank you
I've been wanting to watch this video since it came out, finally did, and loved it!!! We have a small office a short walk away from our apartment and have shot most of our KZread videos there. We were just chatting about perhaps moving one of our desks to the opposite wall (they're currently side by side) so that we can open the space up for either a KZread backdrop or small photoshoot space. This video gave me lots to think about and I'm looking forward to checking out the video you mentioned as well about finding your design style for KZread. Currently, there is *way* too much going on in the background of our videos, simply because it's our workspace. I loved how quickly you put together your tiny sample backdrop using the different types of wood and how you framed with some plants and the long tube bulb. It's great to know the F-stop you use, too. :) Thanks, Becki!
Thank you for this detailed tips! Just started youtube like 2 weeks ago. I was thinking about making my basement into a studio so this video will definitely be a great help for me to prepare my basement 😍
This was amazing! Thank you for contributing to our brands in businesses in this way. It is much appreciated!
Thank you for this video. 🙏 Not only great tips, but showing the space you shot from different angles really was helpful!

Soooo helpful I am using my bedroom for my KZread studio at the moment
Wow, this is the room design I always really wanted. I really adore the color and design.
Is it ok that I now look at every corner of our apartment as a KZread set?! 24 vids in... I’ve caught the creator bug! Ha. Great vid, thanks B&C. Hi from lockdown London. 😊

You guys are super cool. Personally, I liked the look at f4. The out of focus was still soft enough while still showing the depth and texture you worked hard to create. Thanks for creating and sharing!
Thanks for your professional advice. It's very practical and useful for youtuber whose filming background in a small place .
I always get inspired by watching your videos or listening to your podcast. Please keep up the good work cause you are deadly!

Super helpful video! And I can’t believe how easily you made a cool background out of scraps of wood! Can you make a series out of making creative and cheap backgrounds? Like my mind is seriously just blown with how well that looked! 🤯
