Building a Better Windows 98 PC! The Megaluminum Monster
Ғылым және технология
In 2019 we put together the Lazy Green Giant: a Win98 Pentium III computer with Voodoo 3 and Aureal Vortex 2 cards. Can't say I was ever 100% satisfied with it so it's time for a rebuild! Now with a SCSI2SD hard disk replacement, 360k floppy drive, and dual sound cards. AWE yeah.

@@GeckonCZ But the polling is so fast that it is not noticeable. The only thing that I can think of is in an old server room. KVM switches using PS/2 are still around because replacing them is pretty expensive. IDK for sure, I've setup virtual servers but never setup the host hardware.

@@GiSWiG Polling will never be as fast as hardware interrupt. But yeah, unless you actually measure it, the delay won't be noticeable at all in most situations. PS/2 keyboard will however be more reliable, the USB stack can and sometimes tends to crash, which will render your USB peripherals unusable. But that's only relevant in the server environment really. And even there it matters less and less, thanks to virtualization and other factors. Oh and then there is also the placebo effect :)

Though not always very well designed ones. The fit and finish is usually first class and the prices tend to be in the upper range of what you'd expect, though not outrageous.
I love that you put so much effort on that sound aspect. 🎶🎵🎶 You really put a nice touch on that Clint. 👍 I had that Soundblaster AWE 64 back in mid 1990s by the way. Really liked that one.
I know it was a while back, but this was a total joy to watch. So many memories with a really nice modern twist. Very cool!
Ahh the memories of those motherboard mounting clips, the amount of cuts I got assembling pc's with them when they bit you :-D
Oh yeah, I remember that Lian Li case. Wanted one of those back in the day. Nice video as usual!
What a great video,i have just repaired an old Dell and updated with an SSD,and more ram,but yours is fantastic, thank you.
I have that same folding box cutter knife and I LOVE THAT THING. Seriously. I love it to the point where I'm just happy to see somebody else owning and enjoying it.
Miss the Windows 98 days. Thanks for keeping it alive for everyone.
YES! More Clinty goodness!

Still love this case. I will have to get it out of the garage some time soon to see what I last put in it a couple of years ago. Nice build!
Awesome Project again LGR!! and a late happy new Year!

"Clint!" Lol
As always great video! Actually shined some light on older 8/16bit sound samples for midi music. Didn't know the differences lol
Man, i love yous videos. It make me to remember when i was a kid and used windows 98.
11:58 & Clint starts 2020 off with some fine British innuendo, “now the shields in place we can get to screwing”. With the shield in place there won’t be any STDs or unplanned pregnancy.

I just realized that I used to have this exact same case. It’s a really good one! Very well built!
I find myself leaving closed captions on for your things like "[box slicing noises]" and "[synthy disassembly music]". Great stuff (and good video too, I guess 😉)!
As beautifully nostalgic as it is, I never want to go back to using the computers of that time-period again. We really have no idea how fortunate we are that computers evolved so quickly.

I know. I've tried a few times in the past to relive old computing a bit. It's just not really that fun or enjoyable. The amount of cool stuff that comes built in to a motherboard now is just astounding, and plug n play is truly plug n play now. I'd never go back.

@@morsteen you have to look at retro computing like one looks at classic cars. You wouldn't want one as your "Daily driver" but it's fun to refurbish/restore and take out on the weekends. I enjoy playing with retro hardware just so long as I have a modern pc as my main machine.

@@Charlesb88 very good analogy. I however have used classic cars as my daily driver ever since my first car I got in high school in 1997 lol. So I may not be the best one to tell that to. I can understand the analogy. But I find older computers more cumbersome and harder to work on sometimes, whereas classic cars are usually easier to work on than newer cars. Less weird tech in the way.

I’d like to see a vintage pc build on Window ME. Truly the darkest of all windows builds
