Having a blue LED was a _big deal_ in the early to mid 2000's. They were expensive and quality varied hugely. I remember paying something like $12 for a 3mm blue LED in about 2000.

In Russia we had a huge wave of cheap chinese gas lighters with leds between 2000 and 2004. I can remember blue 5mm led price in local radioshack - it was around 50-60 rubles. And lighter with exactly the same blue led was around 20 rubles. So it was much more profitable to buy lighters with blue leds.

I remember being impressed that my PS2 had one. That was the first time I saw one outside of the main beam warning light on cars. These days, a super bright blue LED on a product is usually a sign of low quality.

Stripping it into pieces and having the case anodized is an option... but I'm thinking it looks better plain. One could add drives with practically any color bezel, and provided the bezels were all the same color, they would look just fine. It's very versatile in that regard.

I'm still using this exact case, but in black powder coat, for my gaming system almost 20 years later (nothing crazy, GTX 970 SC ACX2, i7 860 Zalman CNPS8X Optima, Ripjaws X 16GB 9-9-9-24 T1, on ASRock P55 Extreme), and the cooling performance still beats almost every case from 2019. Part of the problem today is all of the badly done glass and mesh fronts (because RGB), but this old case is still high performance. Great static pressure and bottom to top air flow. Nice to see air cooling getting some more love from the reviewers in 2020. Can confirm, it's timeless in function as well so far.

I had a hell of a headache trying to get a similar thing to work with my W98SE system because I just ended up with a load of errors and crashes happening all the time. I don't know if it's because the adapter I received just happened to be not working (I've checked it over and nothing appears to be visually wrong with it, and I know the SSD itself is working just fine) or it's because (and I suspect) that it only works with the last revisions of PATA.

I always found it interesting this project box setup you've got going, nicely era appropriate but with some nice ideas that make for an all round enjoyable experience which in turn have fed back into my own late 90s setup. Have you ever considered using a more modern power supply to run the system? I remember that Gameshark video with a dead PSU and its something that seems to help reliability if the +5v rail is up to the task. Either way, keep up the awesome work. 👍

I'm pretty sure you can directly plug a PWM 4-pin fan into a 3-pin header without any sort of interface. The little alignment notch on the fan connector is aligned in such a way that it would cinch up to a 3-pin header even if the fourth pin isn't present.

I had that identical Lian Li case, a Mid Tower and Full Tower version. Sadly both perished in a fire this year. One had a P4 Extreme Ed & the other was running a P4 Prescott, both 3.4GHz.

Looking for just a build list to build a retro gaming pc that can handle anything in windows 98. Do you happen to have a build list for this machine?

I'm still using my Lian Li case like that. Very plain looking compared to most cases these days but I love it. Mine is a PC-7a Plus II case instead of the PC-66 like yours. I like the larger single case fans on the 7a.

The IDE to SATA thing might be a good idea for my 98 project box. I was going to go with an SD slot solution but that sounds more interesting and homogenous.

I use a Sata ssd with an adapter for an old Pentium 4 box and it works great. Just be careful as the connection between the adapter and the actual drive can be kind of loose depending on what type of drive and all.

You should use the IDE-to-SATA adapter, I'd love to see that. I'm rebuilding my childhood PC and I'm considering using that adapter and putting a modern SSD into a 486 system and just the thought of that is hilarious to me, but also awesome.

I'm dreaming of one of those Megaluminum cases, turning it into a pre-Windows MS-DOS 3.3H machine (8088-1). I'd finally have 5.25", 3.5", and CD-ROM all in one machine. My Vendex Headstart LX-CD didn't come with a 5.25", which at that time wasn't always convenient; my uncle had to copy a driver for something (either the printer or the hand scanner) from its original 5.25" disk to a 3.5" HD floppy. When we upgraded to a 486, we finally had a 5.25" drive, but about the only time I used it was to transfer the _Wolfenstein 3D_ Shareware installation disk to 3.5" floppy. Now, I'm finally reacquiring the proper boxed copies of games rather than the pack-in shovelware CD-ROM, and I need a 5.25" drive again (this was that other question I mentioned in email).

I’ve used a lot of those sata-pata bridges for putting ssds in to older computers. Some older motherboards do not like SSDs at all. Something about ata commands specific to ssds. Those promise pata controllers have a good bios of their own and handle ssds just fine.

  • @Mini-z1994

Worth installing that ssd, perhaps together with one of those 5.25 sata drive bays & then that ide to sata converter behind that or a pci sata card so you can use the ssd on a windows 98 compatible sata controller for some more speed.
