Please stop apologizing to viewers for owning a domino tool. You're a professional woodworker. I personally tune in to see you create these awesome pieces the way you like to do them, with the tools you like to use. I don't get anyone who doesn't like your videos out of envy or whatever.

It’s a weird thing. It’s like watching a cooking show and the chef has a $10k oven and you think… I can’t make that bc I don’t have that oven… well… you do have AN oven… or a stove… or a grill… or a firepit outside… 😂😂😂 So yeah, I don’t get it either, but the comments definitely roll in as soon as I use it!

@@3x3CustomTamar people that complain you have a tool that's not at their disposal aren't professional woodworkers. If they were, they'd either have the tool themselves or would understand there are alternate ways to get the job done.

Agreed don't apologize for your tools.
Those dowels were seriously one of your best tips yet. In the past, I've solved similar problems by either using metal threaded inserts (and hardening the surrounding grain with thin CA), or going through the enormous effort of cutting in a bridle joint. This is so much simpler, just as effective, and can be done with a blind hole for an invisible result. Not only that, but they'd work well in a repair. Keep up the great work.

Another excellent build. Professional or hobbyest, I think what people have an issue with is the majority of youtube creators are given these expensive tools unlike 99% of others who have to pay for them. I don't care one way or the other. I bought my sawstop, domino and Mirka sander. I am saving up for the festool track saw. If you feel you need to apologize then do what you feel. I think its worse saying it can be done other ways if you don't have one. Everyone knows that it can as the domino wasn't around for that long compared to other methods. The best part for me was the "I care that it's even" remark and how much your children look up to you for your skill. Stay who you are, that's why you are where you are!!!!
I read a comment once not long ago that suggests, even if you are a hobby woodworker, the high end tools are worth it. The reason being, if you are a hobby woodworker, mostly like is because you just have less time. If you have less time then the better more efficient tools makes the most of that limited time and you get a lot more pleasure during that time enjoying your hobby. I decided to get the cheapest tools to start to get a feel of things. I am leaning to agree with the idea that the better the tools you have the better time of it you will have. I feel I have got the full set of cheap tools at this point and from this point forward I will get the best I can get. Lovely build btw, your work is always evolving and wonderful.

Yeah. Totally makes sense, but to each their own. I started off with all ryobi tools and cheap Amazon finds… and as I progressed I got better tools. Great video. One idea: I mark the inside rail every foot. The marks help ensure the slats remain parallel and at right angles to the stretchers. One more idea: IKEA sells bed slats for different mattress sizes. I think they are called Luroy and cost only $30. That’s cheaper than buying slat wood. The IKEA slats work very well. One spacer on each end (four in total) is all it takes to use these slats since they are attached with a semi-stretchy material.

Late reply ... I had more Maker time when my first was a baby than when she was mobile ... but she started walking at 8 months, so my time was short. One thing you can do is switch between hobbies. Little kids do not belong in the wood shop, but they're safe around sewing, knitting, making chain mail, cosmetic formulation (not soap) ... these are some of the artisan crafts I rotated through. Or go in a different direction and learn CAD software or building web pages. Also, many home maintenance things can be done around kids. I painted my house with my 5 year old son "helping". [He's a very calm person.] I assembled Ikea furniture around them. I even bought Shaker chair kits to assemble, finish and weave seats. You can't stop a True Maker.
I keep going down the list to previous bed builds and I'm sensing that they just keep getting better by how you always refer to a previous bed you struggled with😅😎👌🏿 It's amazing to see your progress

What a great project to test the new shop layout and tools.👍 I know you get a ton of comments about your addiction to the Domino, but it doesn't need to be surgically removed, so I don't really see the problem.🤪🤣 Besides, any trim router or typical router plunge or standard can do the same thing or even a drill and chisel if a person prefers. This project actually showcases the benefits of having certain specialty tools and why they are worth having. We all buy things that others would never pay that much for, so personal preferences are just that... Personal.😉 I prefer the drill and chisel method because most of my work is on the job without the luxury of shop tools or the protection that shop provides, not to mention the extra loading and unloading of those additional tools. Just consider the Domino your favorite comment generator because you know someone will always make a comment. 😁 The online material ordering is only as good as the company you are dealing with. The materials you received are far superior to anything I can get shipped here to Hawaii. Unfortunately most companies ship me their junk or seconds because the return shipping is not worth the hassle. 😒 If companies are even willing to ship in the first place. This is just the reality of living in a remote location. Personally I prefer hand selecting my materials unless it's a whole unit and then you get what you get. Wonderful project!👌 I'm sure this one will be in the family for a very long time. By the way, good seeing you find a bit of time for a project, especially with a full house.😉🤙

You know what. I was loosing my mojo in doing some woodwork but your videos always inspire me to make and improve. Many thanks for that.😊
Beautiful build, and that dowel trick is genius! Woodworkers source is the bomb. I'm fortunate to live near one of their warehouses and the folks there are so nice and helpful. I understand both sides of the domino thing. I don't think the people who are disdainful of the tool are necessarily envious or anything. It's more about the fact that dominos are so effective at a lot of things that they take a lot of the problem solving out of woodworking. Dominos eliminate M&Ts, dowels, biscuits, and a myriad of other joinery tricks. This is great for productivity, but it does put some distance between yourself and your audience, because the folks at home are solving a host of other woodworking issues that you simply don't have. Similar thing with the Origin or with a CNC. There's nothing wrong with using them, but I learned a lot more watching Mike Farington's tricks for using a router and hand tools to cut dovetails by hand than I've learned watching other people use CNCs to make similar joints. Again, there's nothing wrong with the tools, rock what you got. In my opinion it makes the content a bit less entertaining/informative, but you've got enough other stuff going that I'll still be watching.
Sorry Tamar, but only now I saw your new video. I like to watch when you post. Perfect. I like all your videos. Thank you so much

This video is perfect for me as I'm in the design process of building my own bed. The free-floating shelves are a great idea (1 that I will be incorporating into my design as 1 side of the bed isn't big enough to have a bed side unit). The bed rail hardware looks like a great idea, here in the UK most wooden beds require assembly with long carriage style bolts through the end grain which puts a lot of pressure on the wood itself and using the dowel to drill into is a great little idea.
Simple but efficient. Good work !
Please make that video about the bed rail hardware, as it would help a lot of folks. I'm in the middle of this task and it's not easy. I used a router guide bushing, a 1/4" spiral upcut bit, and a custom slotted jig to cut the shallow mortises for the mating hardware. It took several tiny depth adjustments and some chisel work to get those mortises just right. For the narrow, deeper slots that receive the metal hooks, I ordered a 5-mm spiral upcut bit and used the router table for extra control. Once again, the key was precise adjustment. Next time I'll order your adjustable jig.

The cost was a big hurdle or so I thought, but in the end a dealer sold me a new one for less than used ones were selling on Ebay. It is a great machine and now something I use all the time.
