How You Build A Rocket Motor(Song): / how-you-build-a-rocket...
Backing track: A Brand New Sunset (Modern Version) - Joe E. Lee
Lyrics:
There are several parts you need to build a rocket motor
A nozzle and a closure and an insulator
You shove them in a case and then you fill it up with sludge
Don’t eat the sludge (it looks tasty!)
The forward closure’s made of 6061-T6
It gets an O-ring then another then a 3rd in case one splits
Tap the hole for the transducers
That’s how you build a rocket motor!
Now it’s time to make a nozzle and that comes in several parts
A graphite throat, a carrier, a whole lot of heart
These parts go on a lathe and then we make a lot of dust
Don’t breathe the dust (I love my lungs!)
The pieces go together and you seal them with ketchup
Just kidding it’s not ketchup it’s room temperature vulcanizing silicone
Now the nozzle part is over
That’s how you build a rocket motor!
And now it’s time, to make the sludge
Delicious sludge, don’t eat the sludge!! (It’s not worth it!)
You take HTPB, IDP, aluminum and mix
Then add the perchlorates, yum!
Now MDI, to cure the mix
And then you vacuum degas all the bubbles til the sludge gets thick
And when you’re ready pack the tube with 40lbs of cookie dough
And then you wait a bit, just a bit sec
Finally, remove the core
And that’s how you build a rocket motor!
Can we be done?
No! Now there’s one more step that’s left before we see if this thing works
We’ve gotta build a test stand and then work out all the quirks
Now we fill the thing with water, and pressurize it hard
69 bar (nice!)
The motor passed a hydro-test so now let’s light the match
But first we’ll get it polished to ensure that it looks snatched
And don’t forget the paint good sir
Cause that’s how you build a rocket motor!

WTG! Idea for liner application - slow 'roll' the case whilst spraying the liner via a high RPM nozzle that repeatedly dives and climbs through the case - think 'coolant thru end mill' but it's a spray nozzle on the end of a rod instead of an end mill. Also kind of like honing a piston engine's cylinder - but you're spraying material into the cylinder and the cylinder is rotating to hopefully avoid uneven thickening of the liner material as it dries/sets/doesn't explode 😝

I think that musical number is the best thing I’ve seen on KZread in the last 10 years. I was thoroughly entertained as well as educated. Wow. It made me smile with delight, just like the early days of the Internet. Thanks for that bit of sunshine, Joe.

I just came back to this video and realized that, while the song about the build process isn't exactly the kind of music I like listening to, u are most definitely not a bad singer. But part of that is that ur voice is pleasant to listen to in general. I almost never talk in my videos coz A) my spoken english isn't nearly as good as my written english might suggest and B) I don't think my voice is nearly as nice to listen to. None the less I've received multiple comments over the years asking me to talk in my videos, so I do have a few videos in which I did in fact talk instead of writing everything in text overlays. But u've got the perfect voice for KZread videos (and singing) so it's a good thing u are running a KZread channel.

Just leaving a note to congratulate you Joe @BPSspace on both your successful burn of that motor and the outstanding content of this video. Really glad you included the song - well written and performed - which just brought more humor and humanity to your always excellent work. Many more nominal missions ahead!

I liked the sing-along song at the beginning, singing about how to build a rocket motor. I'll never forget how to build a motor again!

Dude, that was a very slick video intro. Very well done. You've come very far over the years since you went through that rough patch where you needed a break from your channel. I haven't watched the previous episodes of your Simplex saga but the difference in production quality and effort since say a few years ago is like night vs day. Again, good job mate.

Amazing performance! Thanks for producing this series on solid rocket motors. While I studied them heavily in undergrad, there were a few extra things here and there that I learned which will certainly help me in future motor development.
