Build your own 980Nm IR-stealthlight!

Hej guys! Me and a friend have made alot of different experiment with IR lights rated from 850Nm to 1050Nm. After the testing we saw that some lights was visible in digital devices but wasn´t that effective in analog nvgs. So i bought some parts and built my own light specially made for the Sionyx Aurora. After some of you guysd asked me if i could sell you one i had to say no due to not having that kind of time on my hands. However i came up with the idea of making a simpler version and film the process so you can make your own :-) Hope you like it!!!
Please leave a like, these kind of videos take alot of time and money to make :-)

These parts are out of stock sometimes and you may therefore need to find a alternate shop.
In the case of you having to find an alternative LED, Be sure to see that the LED is 970-980nm: 1.3-1.6V or else this example won´t work!!!

why not just put the filter over the regular white light led?

Good question, LEDs doesnt work quite like halogen bulbs. They got their specific wavelenghts that they specialise in. If you look closely in the video at one point an example of this is made in a diagram. Some LEDs have double wavelenghts but im afraid these will result in less pure 980nm wavelenghts after the filter

Look at 0:56 to see how narrow a 940nm LED is. White LED work the same way.

The listing for the LED is over. Could you update the description with a link to a new one?

These leds have a tendency to get sold out. So updating the links would be a very short time solution. The best way to find leds is to search for 970-980Nm LEDs and check the sellers spreadsheet for what voltage they are rated for. I think i mentioned that in the video. But anyway i will try and find a new seller for you 😉

I have looked on Ebay,Aliexpress and Banggood. Ive only found one seller that have them. Better be quick if you want them. They seem to be hard to find. There are a bunch of 980-990Nm Leds that use a voltage rated 1.8 to 2.2Vdc. I have tested those and they dont work. Hurry and buy one of these: www.ebay.com/itm/225004997842?hash=item346357ccd2:g:18sAAOSwTDhiPwEj

What's the purpose of removing the electronics on the battery terminal at 3:42?

  • @mattiasolsson1766

The reason is because im not sure of the purpose for it. My biggest guess would be that it transforms the supply voltage coming from the battery to match the donor LEDs Forward voltage. due to the fact that i dont´ now how the electronic would react to changing the LED i didn´t want to risk damaging the much more expensive 980Nm led. supplying a higher voltage than its rated at will burn it. If its the other way around and its lowering the voltage the 980Nm LED won´t work at all. The new LED is rated perfectly for one AA battery as it is so i figured that there is no need for any adjustment of voltage anyway. Better safe than sorry. As of now my modified flashlight still works and i´m actually going to make one extra for mounting directly to an airsoftrifle. Hope that explains it ;-)

@@mattiasolsson1766 thanks! Awesome instructional video by the way. I bought a 980nm led but already mounted on a 16mm pcb so i dont have to worry about reflowing the led on the chip. Have you tried that method? I have the same flashlight you showed in the video.

@@John-hs6cc thanks! I made it just to help people get into NVGs without going bankrupt. Also gen3 devices are hard to come by here in Sweden. I'm also standing in line for a Sionyx Opsin that I'm going to buy as soon as it's out. I'm going to test these lights with the Opsin too. Anyway regarding the presoldered PCB. I haven't got hold of any of those so i figured i would make a video were you use what you have. But if you get hold of those presoldered PCBs then that's off course the best option to go by. 🙂

@@mattiasolsson1766 sweet thanks! I'll for sure make a video on how it goes. Here is the item name in aliexpress for the ledi bought. "2pcs EpiLED 5W IR High Power LED Emitter 5050 4Chips 850NM 940NM 980NM 1050NM Infrared Lamp" I also built my own night vision using an nighttime fpv cam and a electronic viewfinder. Hopefully it has a similar spectral sensitivity as the sionyx.
