Me too haha
Great video! The up close camera angle of the movement really helps.
Not to correct the goat, but you did explain ankle technique a little wrong. Check out Marthyn for some insane double bass explanations, but to do the ankle technique away from the kit correctly, you do NOT lift your heel up then tap your toe. This activates the shin muscle in the front of your leg. And its why doing this away from the kit for an extended period if time will start feel like burning on your shin. The movement is qctually like lifting the heel up, then placing it back down. The beat on your kick drum will come from your heel going up instead of when it hits the ground. This action contracts you calf muscle instead of your shin muscle, and the quick contraction then release is what forms the basis of the technique. Only practice ankle technique away from the kit WITHOUT a reference to a beat, it can confuse you when you get to the kit and the beat happens at a different part of the movement than when it did away from the kit. This part of the explanation is what helped me actually learn the ankle technique, for a while I was stuck only stomping or moving my ankle from the shin contraction.

Thomas Lang, James Payne, JoJo Mayer, the list of drummers who would disagree with your advice (who give tutorials online for free, or in-person lessons, or clinics) continue. I've taken lessons from james payne in person, and also taken the drum technique academy; Marthyn's techniques are based on tension and targeting a triggered pad, while often not even caring about the metronome. HIs training video for the 170bpm workout has errors in it which is weird that he wouldn't re-record something that takes 3 minutes. It's odd. There's errors in this training video iteslf (I could timestamp them if you want) - but Marthyn's techniques aren't better than the control or logic presented in this one.

I agree with @midinerd … I bought both the bass drum mastery from Marthyn and double bass course from James Payne 2 years later… I must admit that the Marthyns way did not work for me at all and I just kept being frustrated… But the James way you gain the control over at lower tempos which makes you more confident when going faster, etc… So in conclusion, you must train both shin and calf to have full control over your ankles…
Great information. I'm still trying to get my heel, toe down fully. This always comes in handy. Make sure you get on the list everyone. Gabe is an amazing teacher. You can not go wrong. This is my second year in, and I love it. Can not wait to see you play in KC. Hope I can get front row.

Keep up the great work my friend!
I just got my first drum kit, V drums. and I've been watching your "training" videos I transcribe your drum notes and take them to practice with. Last night I was using your "3 best beginner exercises" video. Last night I felt like I was smashing or mashing the kick pedal and thought I'd watch a kick pedal technique today, and boom you were the first to pop up. But yes, someone is using your techniques, please know that. Peace...
Thanks that is exactly what I need

I like it, I started doing something similar with my electric kit at home, since it had a single kick pedal and my acoustic kit thats in the bands space has my double pedal (joys of living in an apartment) good stuff Gabe, tell the guys in Iprevail to book a show near Dayton Ohio so I can finally see you live lol
You have no idea how we always await your posts mr Gabe… such an inspiration❤️

My pleasure!
I be using my legs. Gotta get better now! Thanks! 🙏🏼
yo gabe thankyou so much for everthing Ilearned a lot from your vids(philippines)
Thanks man for video. What eliminator pedal settings have you tried before? how did you come to the current(cams, spring footboard, chain position)?
Hey gabe what spring tension would you say works the best for both speed and control
Just dropping by to say thanks for this tutorial. Take care, Gabe!
this vid is a key of success, btw man, what kind of nike shoes on you?)
Gabe is in the ad for KZread premium which is awesome
Glad it’s not just me that finds slower tempos much more fatiguing. If I get warmed up and go for say 190bpm I find it comfortable and can do it for ages. If I drop to say 150-160 it’s so brutally hard!
Utilizing the Kick drum at different speeds can make it settle for so many genres alone! Cheers man!

Those avatar is awesome 😂🔥
Does the Academy have a notation Library, I have to see it, playing by ear is not my forte.
Is top of your thigh soppused to hurt or am I doing it wrong?
I always played using the lowest foot because if I use heel up the sound ends up being too loud

@@DrumBeatsOnline No problem friend. I joined you last year, but haven't been able to get too far since my wife got deathly ill right after. So I'm still at level 1. But love your lessons. I wanted to tell you HOW IMPRESSED I WAS TO see you take up RDavidR, on his request to record a song for him. Even though you're so swamped you still took that little job on. That's why I joined you. See, you never know what a small job can lead to. Bless you friend.
What happened to the Falcons?
Marthyns explanation is better
Bro has seen James Payne videos... Seriously the main missing element is the startg motion, since ankle muscles are weaker, the goal is not to be pushing the pedalboard with full power each time, but just giving a little energy boost at each movement What you actually want to do is a full leg motion for the first stroke and then using the ankle to keep the movement going doing the movement off the pedal, and without spring help to dévelop the motion And it's totally possible to use ankle technique for double kick
4:01
I was taught the angle technique is when you basically lift your heel and bounce your foot. This seems way more physically demanding
lately i’ve been feeling like my right foot is just super weak and playing sequences of 3 or 4 has been so difficult. im not sure if it’s a speed thing or a control thing :(
It looks so easy but my foot always sakes 😖
hello this is me from the "future", I am confused that he is using his old set, BUTT he ever said he will NEVER use it again. GABE HOW COULD YOU?!?!?!
0:42 that was actually too slow🤣🤣🤣 Watch El Estepario Siberiano

It's true!
Why do you leave that toe stop thing on your pedal? Can you show us less talented folks, how to do the heel/toe combo double but even. So it's not da-da pause, da-da pause, but da-da no pause even space da-da.
that isnt even fast at all lmfao
