// ABOUT THIS VIDEO
In this woodworking project, I'm designing and building a custom cabinet for a record player. This project features lots of angled joints and seems complex, but it really isn't, it just has a lot of steps and requires a lot of going back and forth to get the job done.

I'm working on a documentary right now, and I've never heard truer words. "My ideas are more advanced than my abilities". From one artist to another. I feel you. Keep up the good work man.

Such amazing work. I have my first table saw coming in at the end of the week and got a handheld router for christmas. I found your channeling looking for something to store my records in. This really blew me away. Your such a great artsits. I hope one day to be as good as you. Also thank you for helping us see we all have fears in doing new things.
I really love the idea of a parallelogram for record storage. Records naturally wanna lean to one side or another anyway. I think it works quite well. Awesome design.
The focus on the design and your thought process that goes into your projects makes your channel stand out.
I'm a listener on the podcast and this is the first video of yours I've watched....I'm hooked! Excellent story telling and the cabinet came out great! Nicely done! Subscribed.

A lot of the woodworking videos on you tube always come across as problem free efficient and smooth running. We all know in reality when we try to reproduce the projects we see there is a lot of learning that goes along with trying new things and a certain challenges create difficulties. I really appreciate your openness to talk about things like skill limitations and mistakes and aspects that are good enough. I think you have made some incredibly beautiful pieces and I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.

Thanks Bob! Yeah, this project was full of little mistakes. I go into more detail about them on a past episode of our Podcast (Modern Maker Podcast) but, in the end, they were all fine. :-)
Chris, I finally had time to watch the complete video. I agree with your comment about problems and how to solve them. Thanks for sharing a slice of your time and work with the rest of us!

Hey Matt, thank you for watching, and the support :-)
the dynamics of this piece is just stunning!
Amazing work Chris! I especially love the hardwood edge that just seems to blend right in with the plywood!
Thank you, Chris. You are an encouragement and not just in woodworking. Thanks again.
Well, y'know, the thing about the direction of the cabinet is that a right lean is just much more aesthetically pleasing. It may not be as functional in this application, but while a left-leaning cabinet would improve the function, the form would have a much different effect. It's like in film or photography, if you have objects moving across the frame from left to right, it feels very natural, whereas objects moving from right to left create tension, unease, suspense. This is mostly to do with the direction we read our written language, as these "rules" of composition are reversed in regions where they read right to left. But that all said, a right-leaning cabinet definitely elicits a different response from a person versus a left-leaning cabinet, and I feel like the response from a right-leaning cabinet is the one you'd actually want in your house.

Dave...it's funny, somebody else just asked about this. They were wondering if it could have to do with being right/left handed. I had never thought about it, but said this comes more natural to me because of the way we read (as you stated) and I also used side-scrolling video games as an example...with are overwhelmingly designed to move from left to right.

Yeah, exactly, video games is another medium that's heavily left-to-right-oriented, largely because of the reading direction of the regions games were developed in. It's surprising just how much impact that has on a culture.

Chris Salomone couldn't you just have flipped the piece around which give you the opposite slant, a left lean?
Another awesome build and all came together beautifully.
ALWAYS AMAZED that end narration tied it all together
You do some of the best videos on YT. I usually hate it when people blather on & on. You are so thoughtful and precise in your words, that you are a pleasure to watch and hear. This was a tough project, and I wouldn't put this in my house, but it was well done & I thank you for sharing it with me.

I love watching your videos. You are a woodworking poet. A craftsman philosopher.
Extremely impressive Chris. We all work through our intimidations in this way. Finding work arounds to compensate for what you don't know is how you get really good in the long run.
yes! this was what I've been waiting on. Hearing you, Ben and Mark (lol) talk about mistakes and finding solutions for em makes me feel at ease. Idk why I assumed everyone had everything figured out and builds should be super smooth. Def helps my confidence. Keep it going, I look forward to every video you put out!

Wow! Really loved this one, the project and the video. Excellent!

Your work, and the projects by the other gentlemen on the MM podcast, have inspired me to start designing and building my own furniture - slowly phasing out the Ikea, thrift store finds, and hand me downs. There is nothing wrong with knowing your limitations. As long as you've tried and found them. And are actively working on moving them away from you. I'd love to see another video of you trying the original design, just to see what it would look like and to see if your imagined limitations are real or not.

I agree with Dave Starr that a left lean would improve the function but I come from the point of view of the experience of pulling out a record. I'm a record collector, and I believe like most collectors, I place my records into the shelf with the spine facing out towards myself, making it easier to identity a particular record by looking at the colour or title on the spine. This also means that the cover will be on the right as well. If you have a left lean, it would make reading of the spine easier. And when a record is pulled out, the cover would first be seen rather than the back. Just a thought for your consideration, otherwise it's a damn gorgeous cabinet!

Hi Chris. I have just become a patreon supporter of yours. To be honest, your channel, work and character has inspired me to try my hand at woodworking. I have always appreciated good quality, hand made objects and secretly wished that I would be able to build something myself. I think it stems from my father as he was so talented with his hands. He had built every house I had lived in single handed; from foundations to brick laying to cabinetry. Unfortunately, as a young guy, I didn't pay enough attention to what he had done. I always appreciated the detail in his work, especially the brick work, but I never got to learn from him as he passed away as I was finishing up in high school. Twenty odd years later, its time for me to get stuck into this. Interestingly enough, I hope to make a record / stereo cabinet in the future as there were many nights as a young kid when I would listen to an LP with my father in front of his cabinet. I have been going through your channel over the last week or so, and others like Rob Cosman. You may not have time, but are there any other channels / sites / books you would recommend? I want to read / research more before spending on the tools required. Thanks again Chris. Love your work.

Hi Stephen, First off - thank you! That's really great that you're just starting to get into it, and that you found me. A few years ago when I started my journey I was on your side of things, so I definitely remember what it was like. I'm happy to give you as much help/guidance as I can. I just sent you a thank you message over on Patreon. When you have a chance, reply to that so that I know you're seeing it, and we can have this conversation over there. It's a lot easier for me to keep track of things as compared to in the YT comments. BTW, might not be as responsive today with it being Mothers' Day and all :-)
