Get help with a project! practicalpreppers.com/consult...
Using your vehicle to fix itself! If you are out four wheeling and break a drag link or tie rod, could you repair it and get home? If you were bugging out and need to make a repair using only the equipment you have with you could you do it? This was a fun little project that might come in handy one day!

we do allot of welding that way in when we are in Zambia. We all so use the quick connect ends for a forklift so we can disconnect the battery from the truck then connect a modified pair of jumper cables to the connection and then we weld. Its crude but it works when your 50 miles from anything. When we go back Im going to mount a connector on the front and back bumper so I dont have to pull the batteries out anymore. Love the videos God Bless

Interesting idea, although my son will remark on the penetration depth of a 3/32 rod. For some vehicles load via a #6 tied to the bolt of the battery clamp. Alternator on these vehs fed through the 00 coming via the starter. Disconnecting the starting battery while running, will cause these vehs to stall immediately. My VW has a starting battery, plus 2 aux batteries to run the fridge and camper. I added high current Anderson PowerPole connectors which make pulling them out, a breeze.

I've heard about people rigging a secondary alternator into their pulley group that does nothing but act as a welder. Avoids having to pull the battery and gives you current for larger projects. I've only heard about it, but have never seen one. Maybe build something like that.

Car battery weld is a neat idea - one worry I have about your scheme is the part about removing the battery WHILE the vehicle is running. The battery absorbs voltage spikes, etc. and removing that while the engine is still running could EASILY fry the engine control computer, charging system, etc. Likewise leaving the battery connected to the vehicle's electrical system in any way could induce voltage spikes from the welding operation into the vehicle's electronics. I'd personally say remove the battery with the engine off, try to conserve power when welding - understanding you are taking chances of not being able to restart. One could do a little welding, pop the battery in the truck and run the engine to recharge, then take it back out to do more welding, etc. until the job is done.

It is not documented, but it is rumored that welding in the field is one reason the military switched to 24v in the M38 jeep and other vehicles of the Korean War era. I've met more than one soldier who has told me I can weld with my jeep.

@MrDrichey - normal wire of 3/32 or 2.3mm would 'fuse or melt'- yes. However, welding rods are coated to provide a flux & slag/debris coating the weld, which also prevents immediate oxidation of the 'melt' between all parts & the electrode...so a cleaner, uniform & contigeous weld can be achieved. The overall / sustained wattage ( volts x amps = circa. 1875w) will only cause fusion of wire of a certain diameter, as the resistance is inverse to ts CSA.

Sure, care batteries can deliver up to 500 amps, for bigger ones -- but the circuit resistance limits a 24 volt welder to between 85 and 100 amps with 3/32 rod. Wire in one more battery (36 volts) and you can go up to 5/32 or even 3/16 rod and 150 amps or so, if you need to weld heavier metal (you'll need more cables, too, of course).

Thank you very much, I've recently become interested in developing my welding skills for prep purposes, my first real project will be a gasifier, I'm in the research phase. Here are a couple of dumb questions from someone with no experience. what could be used if you don't have a welding rod? If you're not traveling with someone else, you only have one battery, is there a way to boost the battery to make it hot enough?

He does say "in your bug out vehicle", and any vehicle you intend to use as, and prepare to be a BUV, should always have a few extra batteries charging while running. They serve for many things, besides these emergency repairs, also for light, and other emergency gadgets. In many minivans (which make excellent BUVs, if 4WD) have space under the floor, where extra seats would fold into, that fits a couple extra batteries. Connect them to a charger, and you got plenty power, always.

For battery welding after making your 24v (series) connection between the two batteries put the positive (red +) clamp to your work and the negative (black -) clamp to the welding rod, it is just backwards then what you think and it does work better!! It is DC electrode negative welding. A 12v battery by itself just won't work, not enough voltage! Always disconnect the battery cables on the vehicle that is being welded on! And since you have TWO batteries and jumper cables you can put the batteries together (parallel) connection to jump start the vehicle at 12v! Having Dual batteries in a Bug out or back country vehicle is always a great idea and simple to do.

You spoke about using (2) 12v batteries in series. What I am interested in (based on other comments also) is whether or not the same repairs could be made with a single 12v battery. The only vehicle that I own that has 2 batteries is my superduty ford diesel which is not the ideal bug out machine. Thank you!

If you are doing small welds like electronics lights radios, or welding batteries. One 12 voltage will be ok but you need a second because the power control is not on the lines or batteries you spike once you can blow the battery and fry yourself or damage your object needing the weld So the second battery works for spikes and as a secondary measure of protection

  • @staym925

12 volts wont be high enough voltage, and won't get good welds, unless your very thin metal, using two batteries is better, also using two batteries will give you a deeper weld, won't be as hard on batteries and allows you to weld for a longer duration. when welding with batteries, clamp positive to work piece and negative to stick. One important issue is, you should carry two batteries in you BOV, if one goes bad, you have a back up.

Most welders are converting to DC any way ( depends on what you are welding & the model welder you have ) . I WOULD NOT unhook the battery on a modern car while running. It's finr on this old jeep, but not advised on the newer stuff.

Be careful about sparks around DC batteries. The fumes inside the battery case can be explosive, I'd do this with long cables away from batteries. I've exploded a battery by accident, and it will get your attention. Battery acid all over the area.

This is obviously a "desperate measures" type of activity. Shorting out a battery (which is essentially what you are doing) could cause the battery to fail 'spectacularly'. Do the welding in short bursts rather than all at once. Removing the battery from a running vehicle can cause the Voltage to spike very high and damage components. If the car is a manual transmission consider bump starting it instead.

Be careful. Pulling the cables off a running car can cause the alternator to surge blowing out the regulator, diodes and with computers can blow them. My family had an auto electric shop for 70 years. You can do this with anything running a generator. Its an old farm trick to se if your tractor was charging.

So...lol funny story I live 100% off grid husband gone so me alone 8 miles from anyone and the nearest paved road. I have my 4 year old with me and 5 miles to go my passe ger tie rod breaks and well if I had a welder handy lol wow thing girl would have fix it enough and not Leave her 2011 F250 in the desert to get to her broken down honda suv(Trans was slipping I know what I'd wrong with it) so we get home the biggest storm is headed for us the next day I can't go faster then 28mph in the honda. And I have to drive to Dayton Nevada for the part. (Bottom passenger upper tie with pin) get thr part from my brother in law (owns a shop he's a mechanic) get the part let my daughter run around a little and we get back just to have every store closed not good at all. I go up the hill to my place sleep and go down to the truck very early get the part on to get this find the lower piece twisted and I had to crawl in the wheel well (mind you it's jacked up) the truck slipped off the jack due to my 4 year old jumping in the truck. Ya where was I at...ya my shoulder was given a f-you tap by the F250 for leaving it in the wild. Got it fixed but sadly I am a girl that didn't have all her tools with her. Lol yep had to figure out a few fun things on my own and MacGyver my way home with rope, bailing wire, an open door and a turning colors shoulder with numb fingers as the swelling won't stop. I get home change my greasy, muddy, and now arm in a sling self to the door and we have a total white out. I have been stuck home alone for 2 months with a 4 year old, great truck that I fixed on my own no help at all, my suv is still 2 miles away (I am worried someone will take it or light it on fire) I have gone through way more since and lost over 20 pounds due to shoving my truck out of snow 4 times and mud 3 times. The 4th time I was stuck for over 7 hours. I had broken chains and no welder. So I get to make one like I made my own sets of chains
