Bug Chasers: The Men Who Want HIV | Channel 4 Documentaries

Ойын-сауық

'It’s a Sin' actor Nathaniel J Hall investigates the world of ‘bug chasing’, an extreme and controversial sexual fetish where people actively seek to contract HIV.
The actor meets a 'chaser', a man who doesn’t take PrEP - a medication which prevents HIV from getting into the body - in his quest to contract the virus. He also interviews another man, a so-called ‘gifter’ with a detectable viral load, who is happy to transmit the virus to willing recipients.
More than four decades since the first HIV diagnoses, the virus still has the potential to cause serious illness, so why do those within the ‘bug chasing’ community embrace it?

This doco is just another way to demonize gay men and sensationalize sex. Personal responsibility is everything. "Bug chasing" is all about anger and self-loathing which certainly is not exclusive to gay men and is nothing new. Find someone else to point a finger at.

As a GenXer, I lost 5 friends to AIDS before I was 23. At least, thats what I tell ppl when I speak about living through the AIDS crisis. The truth is much worse. I actually lost 4 of those friends to suicide due to depression from their AIDS diagnosis. The Westboro Baptist Church added insult to injury by picketing some of their funerals, esp. a high-profile friend. Ppl were so scared in the 90s that they would end their life😞 So, I'm with Nathaniel. Absolutely gobsmacked.😩

I have been HIV+ for 20 years and my viral load has been undetectable all this time. This means that I can't transmit, and it is because I am VERY disciplined with my ARV regiment. I have never needed to change my regiment and have minimum side-effects. There is ABSOLUTELY no way I will ever stop taking my ARVs just because someone else wants to be infected! I take pride in how I have been able to keep healthy and my undetectable status and it's not okay for someone to ask you to stop your medication. Your body can build a resistance after two weeks, which is before you become infectious, and you can lose your undetectable status.

What about kids doing drugs that can kill them easily during an overdose? Junkies take a much higher risk. Not to mention alcoholics who sometimes die young due to intoxication or liver disease.... As for HIV, current meds can prevent the virus from decreasing life expectancy, up to 100%. Unlike drugs and alcohol that can cause death if overdosed, within minutes, not even hours later.... Junkies and alcoholics disgust me much more than those hiv fetishists because their behaviour is much more accepted than so called "bug chasing". Alcohol and drug chasers are more ill from a mental point of view, in my opinion.

The risk would become exciting. Unprotected sex would be an act of deliberate self harm. The idea of being given 'the gift' would suddenly give your 'worthless' life some twisted meaning. There's also the possibility they would adore to be cared for by health professionals or want to be seen as a victim, which makes me think of people who have a similar self-destructive kink about amputating their limbs

I have an autoimmune condition called rheumatoid arthritis which is a lifelong condition once it decides to develop. I have now had it for 30 plus years. It has literally taken my life away, and technically it can't directly kill me though eventually it may get into my heart and do that. This was caused by a malfunctioning immune system, Im on a welter of heavy drugs and a constant round of medical appointments. It breaks down joints and now I can barely walk despite already having had 2 replacement joints. What I'm saying is that conditions like these literally take your life away, please please don't contract a KILLER autoimmune disease deliberately because you cannot imagine the pain and loss. You cannot imagine what it is like for the people who love you. And yes, even having worked all my life and paid into the NHS my contributions to my treatments are a drop in the ocean and I feel that keenly. Because while that man can have the attitude that he has paid his taxes all his life so he believes his covered... he clearly has ZERO understanding about who much these medications cost and his "many years" of paid up taxes would cover only a very short period of the healthcare needs he will require and then the burden is on everybody else for his silly choice.

To knowingly give someone HIV in the UK amounts to the criminal offence of GBH (not sure if ‘with intent’ implies). It is my understanding that there are certain offences a person cannot consent to being committed on them under any circumstances. Sex with a minor is the most obvious example. Being murdered, assisted in suicide and GBH are some others. These ‘gifters’ are committing GBH every time they pass on the virus and if identified and apprehended, should be prosecuted.

We don't have to lift heavy things much these days, so we built gymnasiums, where we pick up heavy things and put then down again, repeatedly. It's so bizarre. More and more, people are into twisted and sick porn, only fans and Insta nudity etc. I feel the freedom pendulum over swung and the backlash isn't going to be pretty. The list of offences against our creator is almost endless. Despite this He wants us all to be saved and for our souls to spend eternity with Him in the light. To do that you must turn to Him with a humble and contrite heart. I strongly believe that there will be a warning for humankind in the next two years. This will be the last chance for humans to repent and believe. During this warning everyone will see themselves as God sees us. All our evil will become clear to us and we will be shown where we would go if we were to die then and there - heaven, purgatory or hell.

These extreme behaviours are my way of taking back some sort of control. When you are surrounded by kind and supportive people, your mind builds that you have value. However things like fixating on wanting a limb amputated out of the blue just baffles me, though. I can only think it's more of a mental disorder than thrill seeking addictive behaviour, some obsessive disorder similar to OCD. I’ve studied about psychopathy for years and dealt with one for much of my life, so I can identify them quickly (psychopaths or sociopaths). Both the gifter and the guy looking to get it who were interviewed here show clear indications of psychopathy. Psychopaths don’t care if you don’t want them to die or if you sob for them. The sooner you learn about that the less likely for you to be entangled by a psychopath. They don’t have love, remorse, fear, joy, empathy, or care really. I think they should be respected for their role in our society rather than vilified, but everyone should be aware of what they are dealing with when dealing with a psychopath. That said, something this doc maker left out of this film that he must have done on purpose is that if a psychopath has an infectious disease and feels jilted by his community, which they almost always do, then there is probably a very real possibility they want to use that infectious disease to purposely infect the unsuspecting.

As difficult & disturbing as this was, it was something I never knew existed. I've learnt something - again, highly disturbing - but yet another facet of human existence. Thank you for doing this documentary; it was obviously difficult for you too.

My adult daughter and I sadly did that. We couldn’t understand why we were the only women in the park. It was solely occupied by men, and this was during the day. No dog walkers, children or elderly couples. My daughter googled the park, and we found out what they were doing there 🤢🤮

@@jaijai5250Anywhere you go in life in any particular forest or wooded area it is a sentiment that there's going to be gay cruising most likely around because it's free. It's an atmosphere where's not much activity. And it's vibrating for the gay culture of men to explore their sexuality in public. Explicitly to the unknown. It's a common reality in urban and suburban settings. Nothing really knew about it.

@@michaeldoldron8444 it may be new to some of us, especially if our minds don’t resonate on that level, or those activities. Do you know all the activities and behaviours that groups engage in, when you’re not remotely involved with those groups? Therefore why should I know about gay activities and behaviours? They still shouldn’t be able to commandeer entire public spaces. That area was a space that all the local children would’ve played, when I was a child in the 1970’s, I guarantee it. Sadly children can’t use those spaces now.

What people may also wish to consider is as follows - To intentionally infect another with a communicable disease, be it wanted or not, would fall under the bracket of a section 18 wounding, under the offences against a person act 1861. It could come under a section 20 if done so unknowingly, but to knowingly infect another with HIV would find you being nicked under section 18 wounding with intent. This carries up to life in custody, with a starting point of around 7 to 9 years, although that exercise would be for the judge to decide upon. Culpability, aggravating factors, antecedents ect would determine the actual term of imprisonment, but for anyone considering this, know this, if you are caught, you will find yourself serving a significant term of imprisonment.

Very few people press charges when maliciously infected, (the shock, denial, hurt and shame it hard to deal with) in fact, a lot of hospital staff do not inform someone who might have been infected with HIV with intent that it is criminal offence even more so very few people are aware that *genetic sequencing* that can find the exact people who infected them with HIV a lot of people think you cannot trace and track HIV infection to the person who gave it to them
