Budget vegan family meal idea - Tofu fishless fingers & crispy kale.

Today I'm cooking my favourite fishless fingers and crispy kale, so I thought you may like to follow along.
It took my husband a very long time to even try tofu as 'everyone knows it tastes like s*** he said. I'm inclined to agree that restaurants have no idea how or the slightest motivation to produce tasty tofu dishes. When I visited Taiwan about 15 years ago, I realised what I'd been missing out on. Each day the locals would cycle to collect their fresh tofu and soya milk. It was simply delicious and that's why I make my own milk at home to enjoy this protein packed plant milk without all the additives and preservatives.
Tofu tastes of absolutely nothing, a lot like chicken. It will take on the flavour of any spices added to it which makes it a very versatile ingredient. The beans are cheap and if you subscribe to my channel you will be able to see all the amazing ways to use this cheeky little bean.
I get lots of comments from people telling me that vegan food is expensive, and this always puzzles me. The block of tofu I'm using in this meal is just over $2/€2, which I think is cheap as a protein source for a family meal. I served it with crispy kale, steamed broccoli, stir fried veg (carrots, green beans, onion and sweet red pepper).
I could talk about tofu all day, stay tuned for more recipes and chitchat. Thanks for stopping by, have a beautiful day.

Hi, I found your short videos a few weeks ago and have to say you're an inspiration. I am 59, I am getting back into the gym after having a replacement right hip Nov 2021, I'm now starting to get the same pain on the left hip. I gave up alcohol NYE 2023 and also gave up meat 6th Feb this year. I quite like the idea of intermittent fasting, so might give it a go. I did a 72 hour water fast in 2022 which was great. Xx

I swim twice a week one mile crawl for cardio and just started weight training with KZread Hasfit guys 3 x weekly 30 mins. Plus gentle yoga. Saw a nutrition specialist who says we need 30g protein 3 x daily to keep muscles strong. I use farmer petes pea protein in daily berry flaxseed beetroot juice smoothie as like you not eating meat. @lottiebrown999 Hi Lottie, I've been swimming and having saunas to hopefully build muscle and enjoy some warmth too. Not much fun getting older is it? I used to be a runner and go to the gym lots, but it's just too much to run, so I do pedal classes and use the Cross trainer. I'm seeing a Dr on Friday, so hopefully get on the waiting list for the left replacement. 🙏

I'm quite new to your channel and found it very inspirational. Most of your recipes look very yummy. However, regarding soya and soya products like tofu I will make a pass. The reason is that all soya is genetically modified and I try as much as I can to avoid anything which is genetically tampered with. That's personal choice, but it doesn't effect how much I enjoy your channel. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Yum. Going to try this one! 😊 I’m also encouraged to see you eat soy. I was mixed on tofu for awhile, because I had a hysterectomy and oopherectomy like yourself, and they told me to stay away from soy and other high phytoestrogen foods…YET…my menopausal symptoms were SO severe, I had to get on HRT for 5 years (and then they wanted me on tamoxifen for 5 years as a precaution, but that DOUBLED my post/menopausal symptoms, so I had to quit that, because it was a bloody nightmare.) Now I’m on bio-identicals and eating extra soy and other phytoestrogens. I figured if you’re going to let me be on HRT, I rather go “as natural as possible”…because…though the HRT works much better, it still doesn’t solve my terrible symptoms. Sigh. I hope you’re not having to suffer too much with post-menopausal symptoms after your surgery. Sure love your videos and suggestions. 😊 Take care! 🌹

WFePB (whole-foods, entirely plant-based) here. Five years now. I'm also cooking-oil free, as well. Baking and parchment paper are my good friends nowadays. Instead of deep frying those fishless fingers, they can easily be baked, thus eliminating all that unnecessary fat (1 tablespoon of oil equals 120 calories, and all of those calories are from fat -- cooking oils are nothing more than liquid fat). That aside, though -- your meal looks delicious! 👍

@@tinatee5577 Olive oil, as all cooking oils are, is one of the most highly processed foods known to mankind. You've squeezed out all the oil, thus ditching all the fiber and other nutrients of the olive, leaving nothing but fat, liquid fat. Plus, olive oil is not loaded with polyphenols. There are trace amounts. And you can get a much healthier source of polyphenols from foods such as strawberries, plums, all your greens, blueberries, and other food sources. Plus, you don't get any saturated fat in those foods either. Any trace amount of polyphenols you might get from olive oil is cancelled out from all the fat you're getting. Also, yes, we need healthy fats. But 1) we need very LITTLE daily fats (only about 10% of our daily calories should come from fat; and 2) we should be getting our fats from whole foods, such as about 1/4 cup of unsalted, unroasted nuts, preferably walnuts, or avocado (only one or less per day). Virtually all the whole food plants we eat have some fat in them, which is pretty much all you'll need per day. You want me to list all the medical doctors who agree with me, and absolutely don't agree with you?

No offence, but why would anyone want a substitute for fish, there is no substitute! There are no substitutes for meat eggs or dairy either, thanks. You look well on it though, I do wonder, have you always pursued a vegan lifestyle, or was it an ideological choice you made later in life, thanks?

I caught one of your shorts. You are so cute and so funny. I truly hope you do not do this vegan thing for too long. As long as it's working for you fine but, if you find yourself with any health issue of any kind, please consider carnivore. It's much easier, much healthier, and much more effective. And it's good for the environment. Where as a plant based diet is terrible for the environment. Also, a plant based diet kills far more animals and insects. And it kills us as well. In order to plant your corn and soy, you had to kill all the grazing animals. Research what happened to the Buffalo and the passenger pigeons in the US. PS, Cows don't eat soy beans. They spend most of their life on grass, and then some are fed some biofuel and soybean oil byproducts. (The left over waste products) The fact that everyone lies about this should tell you something.
