Budget gaming CPUs are back... Intel Core i3 12100F.

Ғылым және технология

It's been a while since we have really seen a decent budget CPU but since the release of Intel's 12th gen we have really wanted to get our hands on one of their entry level 12100F CPUs. Can a budget i3 perform well enough for gaming?

This is my set up. Was able to get a 12100f for $100 usd about 6 months ago or so, and just upgraded to an a770. I think this pairing runs better at 1440p

The Arc A770 seems to like 1440p more than 1080p

Nice video all around, but you forgot to post the CPU usage so we can see if the CPU is bottlenecking.

I built one: MB: MSI H610 WIFI (mATX) CPU: Intel 12100f i3 (4-core/8-thread) GPU: Sapphire 6600 Lite (8GB GDDR6) MEM: PNY 3200mhz (16GB DDR4) SSD: PNY 2.5" SATA (CS900 1TB) PSU: Thermaltake 500w (80+ White) Fans: Thermaltake 2x120mm (3-Pin) Case: BGears b-Vigor (ARGB ATX) It runs Death Stranding fully maxed out with AMD CAS on at 1080p over 100 FPS. Hmmm this CPU wasn't even on my radar, but definitely seems an option for budget builds!

It is unbelievably fast. We bought it to simply get our new test rig up and running and after playing for a bit realised it out paced all the CPUs we already have and it was only £100 :O

@@TechLabUK Anything more expensive has really bad diminishing returns. Your getting like 10% more performance at 50% more price. And that's mostly not even because of the increase in cores but the faster single core performance. Single core performance is still king for gaming and you should only increase the core count till you hit diminishing returns. I also don't believe in future proofing since the budget CPU of tomorrow will beat today's expensive ones.

@@TechLabUK 12100f with an upgrade path to the 13400f (or leaked 13300) should the need for more cores arise. Otherwise I'll happily ride out years with my current CPU. I have mine paired with an a750 which was at least least in my country to better option value wise. edit: This is considering the 13th gen series will have a drop in the future. Considering how 14th gen is delayed till 2024 and AMD is pushing really I hard; Intel will be forced to compete for as longer period of time with the current gen processors.

@@Ramontique i love full Intel builds on budget. i3 4/8 cpu will get the job done. Saying this when buying more cores(or more ram) you’re are getting smoother PC experience. This is something that gaming benchmarks won’t show. You will notice this when Windows is doing something in background, downloading, having couple apps open. In 2017 I started with r3 1200 4/4, upgraded to r5 1500x 4/8, 3500x 6/6 and just after few months to r7 5800x 8/16. I know this from experience. Whenever you can get i5 12600/13600 and you will realise what you were missing.

There's something odd with your audio (or is it the way you speak?); your voice keeps cutting down really low at the end of your sentences. Anyway, this little CPU is quite the surprise at its modest price. It just goes to show, it's not how many cores, but how fast each core is!

It is capable of doing some of that but obviously lower performance than getting a 6 core or something.

Amazing review. 12100F is a good CPU, but I think 8 threads is not enought for some areas in some games. And this review proves it in lot of scenario that 12100F can't push 100% workload from GPU.

Yes, it has it's limits. It just did way better than expected especially in those games that don't need it.

I believe it's some optmization problem with the arc gpu, the 12100f has been shown hitting 90+ fps on stronger gpus in Cyberpunk for example and can handle a rx 6600 and a rtx 3060 easily
