Budget COSTCO COBRA Irons vs $1,000 Cobra LTDx Irons!? SHOCKING!

Budget COSTCO COBRA Irons vs $1,000 Cobra LTDx Irons!? SHOCKING! When buying new golf clubs we always want the best golf clubs for us... but does that mean you have to buy an expensive new driver? do you need the best driver of 2022? the longest driver of 2022? maybe you need the most forgiving driver of 2022... none of which sound like they will be cheap golf clubs? What about buying golf clubs from Costco? we have all seen the Kirkland golf clubs. Kirkland golf balls, costco golf clubs and costco golf balls have been a huge hit, now you can even buy Cobra golf clubs from costco in a package set. budget golf clubs could well be the future of golf...cheapo package sets especially... but what is the difference between an expensive 2022 Cobra LTDX irons, vs a budget package irons? let's find out... and let's do it now!

another great comparison, I would certainly buy the Costco clubs based on what you have shown. When I bought a set, trying to get more serious with my golf, I tried a ton of 6 irons. The guy selling them was of the same mindset as you....... he made sure I didn't know what brand I was hitting, as I said "I like the feel of this one" he would put it aside and on we would go until we had exhausted the complete range. At the end of the day I had selected 3 clubs that I liked, I could not separate them. I ended up buying a full set of PowerBilt clubs. These were supposed to be to get me going. I am still using them 10 years later and still love them. Saved myself a stack of money, needles to say I continue to support the company where I bought the clubs, they could have taken me for lots more as I didn't know any different, honest salesman (not too many about)

Love the budget videos....I am still playing my wilson set from 2007 but I think I have the confidence to build my own bag next summer and I am really leaning toward going with graphite shafts. The cobra set is still in play just because the price is just so good. I will probably also consider putting new grips on anything I get....Good stuff.

10:06 The distance difference is likely due to the loft on the Cobra LTDx being stronger which is to be expected. It did not show up in results on the course.

I’m an 18 h’cap and my distance control is such that a 10 yard difference in carry is not something that would worry me. I doubt it would be a serious consideration for a newer golfer. There is always the option to club up? Good, informative video which clearly showed that any difference in performance is not necessarily the result of high tec expensive clubs but more in the skill of the player. Money saved on clubs could be used on lessons which should lead to better skill levels.

Replaced my cobra F-Max irons with LTDx and am finding plus 20 yards at the top end and plus 10 at the bottom (GW), to be expected with stronger lofts. I think the benefit comes in the forgiveness, or at least that’s my experience so far. Less distance drop off from bad hits, and as a high handicapper I get plenty of those!

I purchased the Costco Callaway Edge Set and for me they are perfect as these would be. I only play for the enjoyment to try and stay active, sneak 9 holes in after working in the office or with friends for a social day on the weekend. It allows me to have a good quality set of clubs that play well without spending a fortune. The only thing I "may" upgrade one day if I find myself wanting to play a bit more is I might upgrade a driver. It is great that Costco are getting into golf and making it more accessible to everyone. Great video loved it

It is great that companies now are looking into putting together quality affordable sets. I give lots of lessons to new to golf players and the sets that some are using don't help there enjoyment or improvement. The package sets do at times get bad press, but I think they are a good way to get going.

I want an 8 iron to stop quickly on the green, so the extra loft and spin would make the costco club a far better option for me. More loft on your standard iron set also stops you having to buy so many expensive wedges to fill gaps in your distances

This is your 1st iron comparison video while wearing your new shiny ✨ wedding ring! Congrats again and best wishes. I am basically a rookie golfer; started last year. I bought a starter set of Top Flight clubs at Dick’s. I am very interested in upgrading to a premium set, but wouldn’t want to spend the money on another set I was NOT fitted for. If it was my 1st set, then yes, I would jump at the opportunity to get the Costco Cobras. But I really want to play this year to figure out how to hit the ball better, then get a fitting for all my clubs. Am I on the right track?

This is the classic intersection of the business of golf and the game of golf. Lower prices to attract newer players, then higher prices to promise improvement. 60 years ago a set of beginner irons were 3, 5, 7, 9. Woods 1, 3. Over time, wedge(s), more woods, steel, titanium, carbon, etc. plus tv. Now it’s big box marketing added in. Progress.

For me being a beginner, I care most about knowing my own distances with the clubs I’m using. I don’t care if I hit my 7 iron as far as my buddies or pros, but I want to know when I have a distance to carry, will it do it. With that mindset, extra yardages doesn’t matter to me, performance (dispersion), feel, and cost matters. If the budget option checks those boxes… that means I have a lot of extra money to spend to play rounds of golf at the course!

I am a proud owner of LTDx irons, and I can definitely confirm how strongly lofted they are. In essence the irons are one whole club stronger than traditional lofts. When you hit them, they launch hard. The budget irons have a more soft launch, and yes, my wallet would not mind the XL clubs. The key thing that I have learned over the last few months is the golf ball that pairs with my clubs needs to have very specific characteristics - the Tour Response has become that ball because it matches up very nicely in terms of flighting.

  • @brianmcpeake2509

In the end all you really need to know is the distance you hit them. If the set is gapped enough to suit your game it is totally worth the $. Idk if the hybrid and woods would be as close but as irons go they are good looking and perform.

As a senior golfer, my mizuno forged irons were bought 2007. So I needed some modern technology to regain my distances. These LTDx clubs have lots of weight in the sole. therefore if loft not strengthened, the ball would effectively go too high and not far enough. I tried many irons using trackman. The LTDx's gave me best consistant loft, spin, forgiveness and distance performance. These along with the stealth 22deg hybrid and Wilson D9 driver (no I wouldn't have gone for Wilson but trackman and physical results...) at my age will be my forever clubs. You can show me many different irons much cheaper. But go get properly fitted and you may be surprised at results, in comparison to what brand of clubs you want. I wanted Srixon ZX5's,or Mizuno JPX 921. But when I hit them I could not generate spin or loft so distance not great. same with Stealth and ping irons. Am I happy with all my purchases.....You bet! As a starter set these Costco look to be a good deal. See people buying cheap (not these) sets and they are awful. Result being person believes they will never get good and chuck them in the garage. Sorry!! Waffled a bit 😁😁😁

I'm not a good enough player to reliably get the 10 extra yards out of those premium irons, and it probably wouldn't matter if I did. So for me the clear winner would be the XL Speed set. I was actually in the market for a new set this year and for some reason Costco did not have a set available. So I ended up ordering a MacGregor DCT3000 set which gave me more clubs for less money than even the Cobra set. I've just unboxed them and initial impressions of quality, fit and finish and overall value are very positive. I'll take them down to the range and compare them against my ancient rustbucket Powerbilt Fuzzy Zoeller set (yes, they are that old) and see how we get on.

Even a budget set can play well if you come close and hit sweet spot or near it. Most higher handicappers can't do that so most of them need larger sweet easier to hit in the air and low budget clubs are not easy to hit, so if you are good golfer it doesn't matter.

Random question James, I love these videos, but do you ever feel like your ball striking and game is a bit off when you go back to your normal clubs after testing all the budget / lighter / high handicap clubs? Went back to my normal set the following round and my ball striking was so off it was actually embarrassing.

I've noticed that in the recent club (and ball) "tests" that you don't show swing speed. Could there be an (unconscious) bias for one or the other clubs (or balls)?

1400 more revs with the Costco iron? Means more stopping power which was the biggest problem I had with Cobra Speedzone irons. Always hitting off the greens.

The Costco Callaway Edge set was truly worth it for a budget set. Mostly, because it was a re-issue of the X2Hot that was an older Callaway premium club issue and one of their most successful irons released (same with the Odyssey putter in that set). I am not sure about the driver and woods, but they are also excellent (and possibly similar to the X2Hot). I don't know the Cobra set, but there is a sports store version in Canada at the moment that has even more than the Costo version - Driver, 3W, 3H and 4H and 5-PW and includes a premium Cobra cart bag for about 750$CND, which in Canada means the whole set is 100$ more than JUST the LTDx driver (which is 650$), 50$ more expensive than a Rogue driver (which is 700$) and the same price as the Stealth Driver! So yes, likely definitely worth it. Add a set of Costco wedges to the sports store version and for about 900$CND plus tax you have a complete 14 club set with bag! I am curious to see the Takomo options for the driver as their irons with a good driver would be the only other budget option to consider...

Hey, good comment !! You sem to know your info !! Would you take the callaway Edge set over the Cobra XL set (both from costco) ?

@@JDDD33 If I had to pick between the Callaway Edge at Costco and the Cobra XL, I would personally go for the Edge. The reason is that with the Edge you are getting a re-issue of older model top-tier clubs, whereas the Cobra is more entry level. The shafts are better in the Callaway. And the big difference it the putter which is a true, again re-issue of an older top model Odyssey putter, with White Hot face and a proper Super Stroke Grip. The putter in the Cobra is the weak link. Hope that answers your question... Cheers!

At the end of the day it does not matter one bit if you have the most expensive clubs ever created…… if you don’t put a proper swing on it….you don’t get the result.

The studio numbers are significantly different as the XL Speed 8 iron is 35 degrees v 31 degrees in the LTDx, that's effectively a whole club different. I think this should've been highlighted further not just glossed over as the bare numbers without any context implies that the cheaper club, has less technology and doesn't perform as well as the expensive club so you get what you pay for, where, in fact, the 9 yards difference in carry distance and less spin is most probably down to the 4 degree loft difference. Based on the fact that the XL Speed set is significantly cheaper, performed better on the course & differences in the studio are solely down to different lofts - the XL Speed set is a steal for any beginner golfer or anyone wanting to replace a set of 'hand downs'.

Thanks for doing the research on the lofts of the two irons. So, yes, you are completely correct, the 4 degrees of difference would equal about 8 yards of carry distance normally. Usually, the half inch of difference in club length between irons accounts for about 3 yards of difference. Those numbers are a little different depending on club-head speed of the golfer, of course. It would be best if testers focused on comparing irons of similar lofts, not whatever club number is put on the sole.

You advocate that you want to make golf accesible for ALL pockets (my interpretation of your claim). However, as in this review, you talk about Costco's buget irons costing £400. I hae asked if you would review beginner sets for less, which include full sets plus bag. There are such items for £239 up to £390. I have asked about the Prosimmon clubs in the past because that was my first full set of new clubs. I would still be using them if they had not been stolen. The point is that someone starting out in golf can get complete sets for a lot less than just a set of irons. Some of the clubs I have seen at these starting points are beter named clubs than Prosimmon and may well last the 'virgin' golfer for many years without them feeling the need to upgrade when they start to reduce their handicap.
