The treatment of Dylan Mulvaney by Budlight after the conservative backlash is an excellent case study of the limits of corporate america's interest in the LGBT community. This is why it is so dangerous for lgbt events to become reliant on corporate engagement for success, like corporate sponsors for pride for example. As LGBTQ people, we must understand that these capitalist organziations are not interested in the outcome of our community but soley the rainbow dollar and becoming benefitiaries of the normalization of LGBT identies due the tireless advocacy of queer activist.

Yep. We shouldn't rely on corporation (because all they care is money), but pressure to state to include LGBT discussion in the classroom. Most teachers already do that from time to time anyways, so just have a national policy to organize these kinds of theme (and others, such as racism) in schools.

The way people mistreat Dylan makes me so mad. Like, if you don’t love her content that’s fine, just don’t watch it. The way that people act like she murdered their children is so out of line. I’ve seen people exclusively use they/them pronouns for her, because they see they/them pronouns as a way to avoid using her pronouns while degrading her supposed “manhood”, it makes me sick. Plus her March Madness ad is hilarious, but people aren’t ready for that conversation

The only difference is we didn't have influencers the same way we do now, so it seems like the only thing they've learned since then is to make sure to they have someone to shirk all the backlash onto. Dylan didn't deserve any of this. It was so nice seeing a trans woman documenting her fun adventures exploring her identity. It’s so sad how much these bigoted gremlins have harassed her, and even in TikTok the search bar on the video almost always says “Dylan mulvaney creepy”. Her only “crime” was daring to exist and have fun while being a trans woman. She now only very occasionally posts and despite trying to be positive, it’s obvious this stuff is obviously getting to her

Dylan's so admirable & she deserves only good things forevermore. I'm really glad Matt decided 1) not to have Dylan on this particular episode; while, 2) promising to have her on a future episode about different/more events + ideas. I really want to hear more from Dylan but not necessarily about this. I value not re-traumatizing her more than my curiosity, & I appreciate Matt will give her an opportunity to use her voice for more than being objectified + abused by bigots in a h8 campaign.

Hell, it should have come and gone if you weren't a subscriber to her, but it blew up and she became an effigy for the right to burn, even though they never knew about her beforehand. I don't even like Dylan Mulvaney (nothing against her, she's just the theatre kid type that I find insufferable), I'm not on tik tok, I would never have engaged with her after I'd heard of her if it hadn't been for mainstream media constantly showing this story, the GOP posting about her and the KZread algorithm pushing videos criticising her. She was unfairly sacrificed and it's like society was trying its damndest to go "hate this person." It was a pure witch hunt and I hope that she's living her best life now that the right have gotten bored.

Your point about trans peoples' existence being thought of as inherently political right now is so accurate and I hate that fact so much. It's honestly so exhausting because it warps literally everything I do. How I look, who I talk to, what I talk to those people about - it all has to be thought out because I'm not allowed to be a normal human like everyone else anymore. When conservative politicians are out here seriously saying how they "want to end transgenderism," my life is no longer in my own hands. I now have to rely on everyone else to make sure that one of those conservative lunatics aren't put in power and given the authority to remove me and every other trans person from existence. I think about this a lot and it's really scary.

Rainbow washing is crap, sure. But the fact that it has been going on is a statement from big cooperations saying that society values our lives enough to make our inclusion profitable. The fact that the greed is likely no longer in our favor speaks volumes about haw society values our lives at present - we are once again so oppressed that pretending we don't exist is beneficial for anyone* outside our community. *Obviously not saying that allies don't exist, only that they are doing something for someone other than themselves, and that we will likely see fewer allies in the future.

Anyways, found out there were only one and it made me sad.

lol I'm Canadian, I thought it was like when Coke came out with their Coke For Everyone campaign & all these bottles were released with various names on them, until the last vestiges were the really rare names eg Xavier, Beryl, Adolf, etc that went on sale. So I didn't think Dylan was on all Bud Lights, but I tried to get a 6 pack too, thinking it was like the Coke campaign. I expected B-A Co. had released a limited selection of cans with the various faces of every Content Creator included in the campaign, so I figured I could find at least 1 to buy with Dylan on it. I was shocked when I found out there was nothing but the 1 can. She's right when she says if she ever finds the can again it needs to be in a museum.

I will be the first to admit that although I know a lot about this story, I also wrongly believed there were more cans than just the singular can sent to Dylan. I really dislike the idea that corporations only remember we exist one month a year and I LOATHE all the rainbow washing, but I will also admit I have bought stuff in the past to wear or display from large companies who sold rainbow/LGBTQ+ stuff, and at the time those companies also acted as though they supported us and stood with us, and some even donated to worthy causes like the Trevor Project, GLSEN, etc. This past year I bought nothing, not even from Target. Our store did not move their display to the back like others, it was still proudly on display in the front, the first thing you see, but I just couldn't support them, especially when they told trans and queer artists they could not sell their collaborated merchandise. To go along with the Colin Kaepernick thing, one of those trans artists actually was completely sold out of items from their personal online store. It just goes to show you that we need to stop listening to the voices of the small minority, because it does nothing but make their small voices louder and make people think that what they're saying is what the majority thinks, or should think, and that they're right. I will be much more careful in the future when deciding to purchase rainbow stuff, but I will not stop being who I am just because Joe conservative thinks I should. I'm going to continue to be outwardly and loudly gay!

I am by no means a large trans creator. I make slideshows on TikTok that get a max 50,000 views, but usually more like 500. I have watched the platform become completely uninhabitable to trans people this year. My friends who used to get thousands of likes on every post now get like four. The fyp barely shows trans content at all. Everything we post gets immediately removed and most of the time doesn't get reinstated. I've gotten community guidelines violations for simply using the word trans in comments. It's been really sad watching the trans slideshow tiktok community be slowly eradicated. Especially because trans people on tiktok who post slideshows aren't exactly the most mentally stable people, and for a lot of us, it was our only outlet.

The Bud Light Boycott is a double edged sword. On the one hand, it was an incredibly stupid movement rooted in homophobia and hypocrisy, as well as being fronted by the live action cartoon character that is Kid Rock, but on the other hand, it did kinda shine a light on how stupid rainbow capitalism is. It really showed how stupid it is to just slap a rainbow on something and say "Oh, look. We're progressive now!", and showed how corporations are only willing to protect gay people when it benefits them. And honestly, we need to call that out more, rather than begrudgingly accepting token pandering because Billy the Homophobe got pissed at seeing 2 ladies kiss. So yeah, while the Bud Light Boycott was a stupid movement rooted in bigotry, hatred, and hypocrisy, it was a necessary evil to broadcast how stupid rainbow capitalism is to the world. Also, Greg Owen made a great video called "Anti-Woke Reverse Virtue Signaling", that does a great job calling out corporate virtue signaling on both sides. Definitely check it out!

Yes annoying, the majority of straight and religious conservative people who inhabit the area where I live formerly known from the 1970's -late 90's as the cities gayborhood now view streets lined with corporate sponsored rainbow and trans flags/ a tiny history museum as LGBTQ people having "special rights" and "ramming queerness down everyone's throats" When the few remaining in that area are either struggling small businesses/apartment/slum owners, quite a few there still rely on welfare and charities to get by, the corporations do nothing to make their lives any better, just the appearance that everything is o.k now.

Then Dylan and I would spend the next three to four years taking on new lives climbing the corporate latter at bush until one or both of us have an affair with some ceos and have tones of soap opera nonsenes until we gain control of the whole enterprise. Tragically we will have a huge falling out at some point, but that is a story for that soap opera time line.

The reaction really made me believe that this was some bigger statement and I genuinely thought that Budlight stood by her and that made them mad. But they kicked her to the curb. There was something so heart wrenching to see that sponsored TikTok of Dylan's for the first time in your opening. I have gotten into debates with people espousing trans hysteria or even entertaining the notion of MSM pushing the 'LGBTQ+ agenda' (whatever that is) and even though I'm not on TikTok, I'm still online (unfortunately), and there was no way of avoiding the fanatical weaponization of hate and the media campaign against Dylan, trans people, and LGBTQ+ rights and lives. That it all* came out of that innocent, silly, sponsored spot... I hate that my heart can still be twisted up like this. There has to be a better way for us all and your channel gives me hope in a world where there is more space for sincere, good faith discussions against the torrent of cynical, bare-faced bigotry. EDIT: I know that anti-LGBTQ+ hate and trans hysteria didn't begin there but the controversy was the fire-starter for much of 2023s flaming dumpster discourse surrounding trans people.

Maybe the reason Nike got less backlash is because their market was already younger and/or more diverse than Bud Lights? PS Im a broke grad student now but when I get a real job I'll totally join your Patreon!

and the clown show continues. i couldn't come up with a more ridiculous situation than this one if i tried. holy fleem the "fuck your feelings" crowd sure can't cope with a reality that hands someone they didn't even know about the world's least consequential W completely unrelated to fking anything they have going on in their own lives huh?

At the time when all of this happened I had some personal stuff going on that kept me particularly offline, so first of all thank you for this very informative catch-up; and the most insane thing to me is that this was all over Dylan Mulvaney simply existing as a trans person. From the level of outrage I was hearing of at the time, I really had thought that Bud Light had done a WHOLE campaign of her face on cans across the country... And to hear that it was literally just one single video of her with one single unique can with no political messaging whatsoever is absolutely infuriating. Not to mention all of the pride campaign bs. I cannot fucking believe that I live in a country so unabashedly fucking stupid and filled with ignorant hate.

Another difference between Colin capernick and Dylan Mulvaney is that Nike stuck behind Colin. They didn’t shy him away in the background and retract they’re statements about him, the fought to have him seen and showed that they supported him while Bud Light left Dylan in the dust. Idk maybe that’s another thing that made a difference.

The reason it was different than Nike's campaign is that Nike's core consumer base was not republicans, and they made sure not to alienate the people whose side they were seemingly taking by doubling down with the ad campaign. Whereas beer as a whole and Budlight in particular appealed for decades to a core right wing consumer base.
