Bubba Shobert vs Scott Parker - 1988 AMA Flat Track - Part 2 of 2

Спорт

This is a 1988 season review. It was a close battle for the championship and there is some great racing action. It briefly describes the changing AMA regulations such as carburetor restrictor plates and weight penalties, which hamstrung the Honda and enabled Harley to compete.

This last year(2021) I was fortunate enough to get to finally meet Scott Parker and talk to him about all of the races that I had seen him in and how big of a fan I am of him and his riding style. He signed a large action shot of him with both feet on the pegs crossed up and WFO out of the turn at one of the mile events in his career that he won. He was truly the Mile King and a fearless, ballsy racer that it was mine, and I know, many other peoples track favorite back I the AMA days. It was such a great experience to finally get to meet and talk to the 94 time race winner and 9 time AMA World Champion of the dirt. Scotty, you will always be the Dirt Track King to me even with the riders today (Mees aand the boys) coming after your title. Thanks again for all of the great memories on your swings through CA!

Bubba Shohbert a great run in grand national but you can't argue with Scott Parker and nine number one plates. From the first time I saw him at San Jose on perfect blue groove riding up by the hay bales wide open ( WFO) I knew he was going to be a great rider Period.

@ hondagurl2946 shobert did not get rear ended he rear ended fellow competor kevin mcgee after the 1989 U.S. grand prix mcgee was sitting smack dab in the middle of the track doing a butnout after he ran out of fuel on the last lap shobert rear ended mcgee on the cool down lap casuaing brain injury but he is far from a "vegetable" as you say he went on to become a succesful tuner and crew cheif for a few dirt track team and lives a normal life

Honda wins the title in '87 by a healthy margin- the AMA goes BALLISTIC because their beloved little HARLEYS got their ASSES kicked by a hand built bike with a homemade/ highly modified CRUISER motor (ascot 650), so THEN they restricted the carb size by 2 mills for the following year, increase the minimum weight and get their ASSES kicked AGAIN - BUBBA knows who REALLY won the '88 championship -

@@tommccallan8802 thanks - I was and are still close friends with Merlin Plumlee, Al Ludington, Ray Plumb and all the guys at Honda who spent THOUSANDS of hours building and developing that motorcycle, ESPECIALLY their incredible fabricator George Jobe- they built it from scratch with help from the CJ chassis guys - I remember Merlin telling me how many different camshafts they ground, (over 100) had the pistons custom made by JE when they first stated and they won the championship of their first attempt - pretty AMAZING

@@stevebigansky9372 thanks for the Post back the only thing I'm trying to push on to my buddy is Harley and the AMA and the NHRA has Harley with a huge advantage over all the competitors especially the Japanese bikes in my opinion Harley has been paying off to get the rules changed for their behalf

Shobert's Honda was less than 3 pounds under the minimum weight ?? Do u REALLY think that made the slightest of differences?? No, absolutely not - it just shows how PRO HARLEY the AMA is and has always been - and if u watch Peter Starr's interview with Bubba, he mentioned that the AMA's weighing process was using a couple of FOOT SCALES that they probably bought at K MART!! Bubba mentions that the AMA "officials" (JOKE) weighed his bike 3 separate times using BATHROOM SCALES and on all 3 occasions, the numbers came up differently- maybe the AMA staff could stop flying FIRST CLASS all over the country so they could have enough money to buy some REAL SCALES

AND team Honda weighed Bubba's bike pre race with worn out tires and the estimated post race fuel load (approximately 1 quart) and the bike was 5 POUNDS over the MINIMUM- so what happened to the scales from the beginning of the day until the post race weigh in - I can tell u EXACTLY what happened- they probably left the scales in direct sunlight and anyone who knows what happens when u heat up coil spring?? - in my unglorified opinion, Bubba got ROBBED of his 2nd grand national championship -

That is why he was done road racing!! He didn't ride short track in 1989 because of this bullsh*t 1988 season!! You better do some more research before you speak!!
