@@bsllearningwithmel4459 Thanks Mel. Maybe you could do some more examples of sentances that could be turned into pictures eg. "She stood at the window of her flat" and then some more abstract ones eg "Science is John's favorite subject", "I will go to Canada next year". Thanks again :)

I’ve never tried to learn bsl I know little but it’s the order -time,location,subject matter (cat,human,boy),action of subject matter, question, doing ? - sorry I don’t rly know this was very helpful tho

A really great video, brilliantly explained.

This is a very thorough video and it really helped a lot. I feel like I may have missed one thing though. In the English sentence, you said you saw the black cat sitting on the bridge but I didn't see the part about it being you that saw it mentioned in the subtitles for the BSL ordering. Would it just be implicit from the context that it is something you saw yourself rather than something you maybe heard about or "Yesterday THERE WAS a black cat sitting on the bridge watching the fish." rather than "Yesterday I SAW a black cat sitting on the bridge watching the fish." Or would this kind of nuance not be important in the grand scheme of the sentence? Thanks for your videos, I appreciate you taking the time to help people learn BSL.

Hi Ant, thank you for your comment. I think if its just a statement like the black cat was sitting on the bridge watching the fish then it's fine. If you wanted to add in that you saw it, you could always start off, yesterday me saw....I wouldn't get to worried about it, I think set the time frame up first and sign it like your painting a picture. I hope that makes some sort of sense. Thank you very much for watching my videos!

This is such a great explanation video! I’m currently learning Makaton to assist my charity work, but I really want to learn BSL, too. Since Makaton uses the same syntax as English, this video is extremely helpful!🥰🥰

Great explanation. The way I've been taught is, you can't colour it in before you've drawn it. Just curious, in this example, you sign black cat, why wouldn't it be cat black?

this is so helpful! this may be a silly question but would it be the same for sentences with more than 1 verb? ie: “i hope to improve my sign language this year”- would it be: “this year my sign language i hope improve”?

Hi Sophie, you could sign in 2 ways-"Year sign language improve hope." The reason why I left out my is because with correct facial expressions I would know you are talking about yourself. "Year sign language hope improve." Hope that helps.

Just found these videos and they're great! I have (maybe) a really dumb question: should we mirror your actions, or reproduce them the same way round? In other words when you sign with your left hand, is that our right (mirrored) or our left? I assume it's the latter but thought I'd check!

Could you please just do a load of examples of comparisons between english and BSL for some more help. Maybe even do like a quiz type thing coz this is really confusing lol.

hi Mel, firstly, thanks for the video and taking the time to explain it. I'm a little confused by the inclusion of the 'WHY?' when the original sentence seems a statement rather than a question. Maybe you could clarify? Also, I wanted to know if you might know of any 'cheat sheets' or 'table mats' that I could use in an introduction to BSL sessions going on in my school, particularily that helps with simple communication building blocks. Looking to support others learning BSL with limited knowledge myself. ;)

Hi you’re welcome. The why or it could be another question, is added because it breaks up the sentences and makes it clearer to follow. It’s part of BSL grammar.This is not always used and if it was continually used it could become annoying or make the sentence disjointed. I think experience tells you when to use it and when to miss it out. Hope that helps. Sorry I’m not sure what you mean by table mats but there are some clear books for beginners which would appeal to children and adults by Cath Smith. All the best with your signing 🤗

hither should be a CC icon, press that subs should come up. If not, there are 3 vertical dots at the top of the screen, press that and it should give you the option of adding subtitles. Hope it works.

That grammatical aspect is almost the same as ASL.
