Thank you for producing this video. I'm BSL level 2 and having mulit-channel signs presented in these bite size chunks is fabulous. Your instruction is very clear and the multi-channel sign examples within and sentence is really good. Thanks again.

This was really helpful, thank you :) I'm learning BSL in Manchester, and I know that the signs can change depending on where you are in Britain, so I was wondering which dialect you are using/where you learnt to sign?

Hi Ella, thank you very much I'm pleased the videos are useful. Because I'm Deaf I've grown up signing but I am from the south east of England, not too far from Ascot area. Some of my signs can vary a bit from region as I mix quite a bit with Deaf people from the north and have deaf friends in Derby and Scotland. With the multi channel signs though you wouldn't really find that much variation. It's more colours, numbers where you find a huge amount of variation, and words like shop, mum etc... I hope that's helpful 😊

Hi Desmond, it's grea you're learning BSL! Level 1 covers greetings, how to understand basic finger spelling, meeting people, simple questions such as where, when, how etc...Chat about family, pets, directions (for example describe your work building in basic terms), how to ask if someone is Deaf or hearing, food, I don understand please repeat, numbers and money, weather. You would also learn basic BSL order such as Name me or Your name what? Quite a lot really but don't be put off. 😃

@@bsllearningwithmel4459 Sorry to hear about your illness, I wish you all the best with your health. I've only been studying BSL for a little over a year, but I've found your videos immensely helpful, especially for a beginner like myself. I would say that you and Dan (Commanding Hands) are the 2 best teachers that I've found on youtube. Regardless of whether or not you continue to make these, just wanted to express my heartfelt thanks.

BSL learning with Mel Hi Mel, thank you for your reply. I only asked you that because of something you said. It's clear you are level 6 and maybe interpreter level, so please don't think I'm doubting what you say... But you've confused me on something. You say that you can't speak and sign at the same time. And if we do, that's SSE. BSL is BSL, no question. SSE is SSE, again, no question. But BSL with SSE isn't English... Using BSL with SSE isn't solely English. Basically, what I'm asking you is, do you mean SSE without the inclusion of BSL is English? Hope you don't mind me asking this, I've just never heard that said before. Cat

Hi Cat, I hope I've understood you correctly 😃. As you BSL is a recognised language in its own right. It has its own grammar, syntax etc...I am unsure what level you are so sorry if you already know this, there are many signs that cannot be directly translated into English and vice versa. Also with BSL facial expressions, eyebrows, head nods are all part of BSL grammar and just raising the eyebrows can change the meaning of a sign from a statement to a question. I could go on for ages as I do like BSL linguistics. So there just a few key reasons why it's not possible to sign and speak at the same time. As for SSE, it is signed supported English, which means using BSL signs in English word order. So SSE is not a language in its own right and it's not the language of the Deaf community. Rather it just an assisted form of communication, often for those where English is their first language. But often this is a personal choice for each individual. Hope that helps. Thanks mel

BSL learning with Mel Oh bless Mel, I'm really sorry, you've done all that typing!! I'm deaf, I'm also level 6. So everything you've typed (so sorry about that) I know... I just feel awful that you've typed all that out! I should have thought! It's just how you said it, I've never heard it said that way before, unless I've miss-read that? I'll have another look. But please accept my apologies for all your trouble!
