BSA B31 replica Gold Star short test ride to evaluate.

I thought this might be shown as a 'before' clip to compare with another run after I made adjustments by raising the carburettor needle from its lowest setting, to the middle one, ditching a rather restrictive looking bellmouth which had a gauze over the intake and also advancing the ignition timing a little, but I only got to ride the machine up and down the lane afterwards, as the owner wanted to head for home. I think and hope I managed to wake it up a little, but there is no video footage of an 'after' ride, unfortunately.

Pls leave everything alone. I had one in the late 50’s and it took me from Birkenhead to Sheffield when I was in Uni. Put a fairing on it to keep me somewhat dry and in my ignorance I can’t remember ever servicing it. The ignorance of youth! Treat it as the Gem it is. Cherish what you’ve got as a part of history as I do with my present 1953 GS 500. I have fitted an electric start. In heaven I fully expect God to have my bike waiting for me to take that gorgeous Snake Pass from Manchester to Sheffield twice daily.

Probably a lot nicer to ride day-to-day than the "real thing", no clutch slippping starts or whiskered plugs. Sounds great too!

My mate has several B31 and B33 Beezas and at least one B31 is fitted with Goldie scrambles cams and a Triumph T140 piston. He says it goes Quote, Like stink!!! So if the lucky owner wanted more ooomph that is an option I suppose. A lot of the lads back in the 60's couldn't afford Goldies so these were regular fare around our way, Poor bikes certainly withstood a lot of misuse!!!

Like it. Sounds solid if a little slow, but probably a nice ‘tea room racer’. I think if it were mine, apart from waking it up I would fit a tacho, just for balance….

Bike sounds quieter than a Honda would look more the part with proper pukka clip on bars & matching Rev counter . All in all though a nice tidy period looking bike ,for summer country lane rides & stopping off at a nice country pub for the odd shandy or two . 👍

I bought a new DBD500 in 1961 they all came fitted with a23t engine sprocket which you would have used if you were to race it in the IOM tt this would have given you a top speed of around 115 mph and 70 mph in first gear .we had a set of sprockets from 18 to 23 which we could use depending on where we going if it was up to N wales we would use a 20 this would allow for the climbs and keep the speed up on the flat straights the smaller ones were probably used for trials and scramble bikes. PS for racing they could be tuned up to do 130 mph.'

@@paulhenshaw4514 It's very easy to criticise a bike like the B31 because you'll always be comparing it to later machinery. When I had my B31 in the sixties it was a 1949 telerigid fitted with a dual seat. It was I thought at the time quite a quick bike. My brother owned it before me and it had balanced flywheels, high compression piston, two teeth bigger engine sprocket and I think different cams. I was sent down to the BSA spares to get valves by my brother and they wouldn't fit. When I took the originals back the bloke scratched his head a bit and had to rummage through the back to find matching size. I think it must have had some work on the head or something. Anyway with five star fuel it used to go like the clappers. I remember some of the cafe lads taking the piss because of the rigid rear, but I wiped the smile off a few faces especially a lad with a new Tiger 90. He went off and I started in second slipping the clutch and wound it on. His face when I passed him was priceless. That bike is beautiful as it is and the roads and traffic are so different now I'd enjoy it as it is.

Hi Barry, it really should be quicker than in the video, although it sounded fine mechanically. Most British RE Bullet 350's I have ridden in standard form have been a fair bit more lively than this, Indian examples less so.
