BSA Gold Star 350 short road test.
Apart from a ride or two up and down the lane beforehand, this was my first trip further from home. The machine ran and rode quite well, but didn't seem too practical for this neck of the woods, and 'Bantam Hill' would probably be out of the question with that very very tall first gear!
A bit of wind noise in this one, it aeems to happen on machines which put the camera about level with the clocks etc.

This takes me back to early Spring , 1964 , I had just passed my Test and rode my Gold Star for the first time .
Best camera angle ever! Love BSA singles. Thanks Paul for being bothered to show us

Thanks for that!
It might be a bit high geared, but I was surprised how well it pulled up the hill when you turned left off the A482 Paul. Bloody good for a bike that’s a year older than me!!
You should be very proud of the work you do to keep these classic bikes on the road. Excellent.

Amazing how the styling of the bike still looks modern, good job as ever Paul
For someone who wasn't sure about the head stock you didn't mess about 😂
What a fantastic video, Paul. It really gives the feel of the rawness of the Goldie. I couldn't be doing with that first gear, but hey ho it gives character to the bike that comes over in the footage. You don't need to be doing 90 to feel that you're really moving. Love it. Well done.

Sounds very willing to rev from what i expected. Nice.
That sounded a very gigh 1st gear, but the ratios that I could hear didn't seem all that close. Serious clutch issues with constant use, requires fettling to avoid wearing it out too soon. I've always had a soft spot for Goldies, but I mean the DBD 34. Wasn't aware of so many other types. New tyres on a wet road can be treacherous. Another lovely ride, thanks :)
Enjoyed this one. Good camera positioning.Thanks.

Sounds solid.
Brilliant Paul. Always been my dream bike, but would swap the box for an STD one.

I had a Goldie and the guy I bought it off swapped the RRT2 gearbox for a standard one.
Very long legs with that gearing. Back in the early 1970s, my neighbour had a DBD34 Gold Star - from a standstill, I remember him having to ride a couple of hundred yards before being able to engage second gear.
Best job in The World!!
G'day Paul, 350cc machine all show and not much go, but l love the look of this machine a bit of fine tuning and it will right, pity it's not a 500 model, your doing a great job on the bike, cheers mate, Neil.
hi Paul they were never any good around towns and like, them rrt2s gearbox's where nightmare and dammed hard work to live with kind regards.
Great job. Thanks.
Seems ok Very overgeared for its power I think if i were the owner id be looking at a bigger bore for it maybe 400cc many people have done it And maybe lower the gearing a bit or fit a STD box Its a lovely looking bike overall Its not a trailer queen And i really like that
Engine sounds pretty good, gearbox not intended for roundabouts or traffic (don't think I could put up with that). The test ride was worth waiting for.

Thank you!
It seems highly strung, like it does not like to run below 3000 RPMs at small throttle openings.. Almost like a peaky piston port two stroke, single dirtbike..this machine would be fun and require a firmilular hand at the controls..
Not a comuter Paul 😂
The BSA gold star clubmans, was never realy built as a road bike. It was highly tuned for the track, likewise the rrt2 gearbox. If you want a easy to live with bike buy a B31 or evan better a B33. For a fraction of the cost.

Really.. even, never could spell.
By the way…did you ever remember to look for the lost fuel cap on the Asbo 46? In the comments some people described the exact location
I was hoping you would do the 17 mile route. Shame about the over gearing as when in their element there is/was little to touch them. If you didn't fancy ear'oling all the time then a STD box brought daily use within reach. Those bars looked fairly comfy.
I can smell the Castrol R already..
The high gearing esp in 1st has me wondering if this bike has had a RRT2 gearbox fitted - same as on a DBD (if my failing memory is right). But then my biking days were late 60s to mid 70s - long time ago 😅

Yes, it has the dreaded RRT2 gearbox!
It would be great to see this well tuned CB vs the new liquid cooled BSA.

That is what I thought at least at top end, the 350 is nice without the twitter muffler too almost 441. LOL! It is great to see you enjoying and explaining the practical side of vintage bikes.@@paulhenshaw4514
I don't remember did you change piston and rings with this exhaust valve, but perhaps it needs some more "running in" to get more revs from this engine? Front fork looked much too stiff and this gearbox didn't help as well.

The piston, rings and bore were all like new. I will probably be taking some oil out from the forks, as I mentioned in the video.
I would back off the advance through the villages. Did you set the squish by the book? They run flat if it's not right.

I just used a copper head gasket. I don't think it has a very high compression ratio either. Not sure retarding the ignition at lower speeds would have helped much, if at all, personally.

@@paulhenshaw4514 To be fair I didn't hear it knocking. Not surprised it's not a strong motor if that's what you used. One is supposed to use a gasket that you peel sheets of almost foil off. If I remember correctly one places the head on the barrel, measure the gap betwixt head and barrel outboard of the spigot and then peel down the gasket till one has a set number of mm more than the gap. But then I'm 71 and remember all this from my youth. Perhaps the 350, being a CB motor, was different from the DBD?. I suppose if the piston isn't the correct one then none of the above would make much difference..
Looks a bit bumpy with that 20/50 in 😂😂😂
Is it the dreaded RRT2 gearbox?
