Brush Axe or Billhook, from a time when quality was the statis quo.
This is why I like many of the older tools. They come from a time when quality was the statis quo. I know there are tools of superior quality that can be had in our day but many of them are cost prohibitive to the ordinary man. If you are willing to put a little time into a tool as a project, you can have a very high-quality tool at a price that will beat the cost of the new junk that is available.

Lots of people don't understand old tools . I love them and I have one my grandfather had . I did a little research on it . They were made in the 1920's

I agree with you. A lot of people think mechanisms or mechanized tools are better and in some cases I understand. But the old one still have a place on the property. Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing. Have yourself a great weekend.
Beautiful work Sir. I like the orange. I agree with old craftsmanship being way better than today.

Thank you for your kind words and thank you for stopping by. You can get really good quality today, but it cost so much that it makes it difficult to attain. So I like to find the old stuff and clean it up and you have something to be proud of. Thanks again for coming by and I hope to see you again soon. Have a great day.
STIHL orange, nice touch 👍

Thank you. I was happy with the way it turned out. It’s great to have you stop by for a visit. Hope to see you again soon and have a great day.
Picked up one a week ago-Kelly Works’ T.T. With old broke handle. I Had a new short handle on hand. Easy to Mount/haft these. Great tools. I picked up a larger UN-marked one few years ago-it’s crazy massive-too big in reality. I like the smaller Kelly T T

That Kelly Works is really good. Good luck on the restoration. I’ll be watching to see it. Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend.
I have two beautiful billhook brush axes. One given to my brother. His lack of care shows ☝️ Mine is much cleaner and still durable to this day

That’s great. They are very useful tools when you gotta cut down, wild raspberry or blackberry bushes. They are my preferred tool when I go to work near the ground because I don’t like to stick my axe bit into the ground where it might get damaged. Thanks for sharing about your experience and have a great weekend.
Not just quality went into that handle, look how tight those rings are! Old growth like that is getting rarer and rarer. Good save. I just bought one. It had a pattern on it I recognized, but couldn't place... the blade used to be a MASSIVE rasp! Someone forged a big ole rasp into a bill hook, how cool is that?

That is really cool. If you’re inclined to share some pictures, send them to- toolscouter@gmail.com. I’ve been collecting pictures from viewers of tools that they have and have refurbished. With their permission. I will make a video one of these days showing all of the different pictures. Have a great holiday weekend.
Nice restore or a classic tool. Orange would not have been my choice but you do you.

Thanks for the comment what color would you choose?

Orange is easier to see against the ground and brush. Helps keep it from getting lost. Whichever goes on the blade, all it's going to be is a temporary rust preventative. The more it is used, the shorter the life span of the paint. Is it mopar orange?
this 1 was constructed like an axe so it can hit with much more percussive power than regular knife like 1s

That’s good to know, thank you for sharing. It is quite heavy, and can be swung with quite a bit force. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Hope you have a great weekend.
I have an old one myself. It was given to me by my father who got it in the70's when a fire camp closed. I have used one myself in the 80's when I myself, was a firefighter, although mostly it was chainsaw work. We called it a brush hook. I plan on sharpening mine and restoring mine also. Our tools were red and I will repaint it that way. Interesting way of linseed oiling. I have always just wiped on several coats. Do you keep oil in the tube ? How long do you leave it in? Thanks.

Always great to hear about those old tools that people have, and still use sometimes. I find mine has been very useful on several occasions. I do prefer this way of applying Linseed oil. I do just leave it in the tube, but I am sure to take a stick and stir it before each use. Some of it separates and settles in the bottom, so stirring helps. Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. Hope you’ll come back again soon and have a great week.
Enamels have a recoat time window. Rustoleum is horrible if you don't follow directions and even then it'll get you sometimes.

OK, I do remember that it’s been a while since I made that video. I’ll have to pay closer attention. What type of finish do you suggest? Thanks for stopping by and have a great week.

@@toolscouter For a go cut brush tool, what you did is perfect. High visibility and easy touch up. For a display piece I like sandblasted and linseed oil.

What are you wiping the bare metal with to protect it.

I used acetone to clean the metal before I painted it. Then I used the oil rag in a can to coat the edge. Here is the link for the oil rag I a can. Oil Rag in a Can. I'm surprised there isn't a pin through the top band or a wedge to keep the blade snugged up. I haven't taken a good look at mine yet.

I can’t remember right off hand, but there might be a wedge in it and the band at the top keeps it from sliding off. It is very tight. Thanks for sharing. Have a good one.

@@toolscouter oh, I coincidentally picked one if these up! My neighbor was having a yard sale and had an old one. It has a wedge, but the thing is homemade. With a good look at it I can are the blade won't leave the handle without a wedge because lower band is snugger than the upper so a wedge may not even be needed. It won't go flying into orbit like an axe with no wedge would. 🤷♂️ Anyway I'll post some imgur links or something so you can see this brush axe. It's kind of a trip
