Brush Axe Tool Restoration | DIY

This old brush axe has been around a long time, and I remember uses this tool when I was a kid to chop up all sorts of things. I may even have been the one to break the handle and try to tape it back together with duct tape. When my mom moved and cleaned house, I grabbed this old tool, and it is past time it got a new handle and put to some proper work.
I used vinegar to remove the rust, and then a little elbow grease to clean the blade up and get the big nicks out and repair the bent tip. I didn't use and power tools, this whole restoration was done with very basic hand tools.
These tools go by a lot of names: brush axe, bush axe, brush hook, billhook. They are great tools for clearing through small brush and trees. The brush axe falls somewhere between an axe and a machete. It has a sharp narrow blade that can easily handle small branches, vines, thorns, and cut brush, but is has enough weight to chop through small logs and trees.
If you are clearing trails or just keeping the blackberry bushes at bay, a brush axe is a great tool. You can find vintage brush axes like this for pretty cheap online, and always keep your eyes open at garage sales.

Glad you enjoy the channel! Old tools are the best, there is just something about fixing and using an old hand tool that a new tool can't beat.
great video, thanks! I have an old NC Prison axe , cannot wait to get is back on a handle!
The Tool Police are going to arrest you for Screwdriver Abuse! That actually seems to work quite well, I wouldn't mind having one........Billhook and Brush Axe are now on my list of Farm/Lawn/Garden Tools I want to acquire.

Thanks!
it hits with a lot of percussion power due to how it was constructed.
I call it a sling blade, some folk call kisser blade, but I call it a sling blade

It sure is. I don't use it a lot, but every once in a while, it is just what I need to make clearing up way easier.
The head of the wood should be a little wider. But okay 👍
can white vinegar corrode your skin?

If you leave it on your skin, or soak your skin in vinegar, it could cause damage.
Not a brush axe ,called Billhook comes in various sizes /lengths ,used for coppicing wood and hedge laying .BTW you put it together wrong and have the wrong handle for it .

A billhook is similar, but I believe that name is generally used in the UK and European countries. In the US, this tool and similar style tools, including billhooks, are generally called brush axes, brush hooks, bush axes, ditch axes, ditch bank blades, sling blades, Kaiser blades, surveyors axe, and a whole lot of other things, depending on which part of the country. And the handle is installed correctly.

I am looking for the correct handle for a restoration on one of these. Can you guide me to the correct one?

It depend on the tool. This style uses an axe handle or very similar to an axe handle. Some styles use a straight handle. Often when I have an old tool, I will spend some time just searching online for vintage tools, looking on auction sites just so I can see what the tool was originally supposed to look like. That helped in this case, just Googled "vintage brush axe" and was able to find some pictures of originals with handles to compare to.
