I was a fan of demolition and the road warriors. I was at the royal rumble in Houston when Ax and Smash came out 1st and 2nd then went at it. Probably one of my best wrestling memories ever. I'm 45 now so that was way back in the day. The demolition theme song was pretty damn cool too.

Have to agree with Bruce Pritchard on this one. Both teams look very similar in wrestling gear, but once the bell rings, you know you have two very different teams. Road Warriors were brawlers with very few wrestling moves. Demoilition were wrestlers that used power wrestling moves and brawled when necessary.

If anyone remembers the movie “the beast master” from the early 80’s, the look of demolition had to have came from that. The enemies from the movie would have a leach inserted into their ears and the mask would be locked on to their faces and they would go berserk. The costume was identical. Demolition was not a Road Warriors rip off. The only common trait was the make up. They did have a brawling style and both teams were big bodies. Road Warriors had the actual muscles and Demolition was big guys. Breaking them up was idiotic to me. When the Road Warriors had arrived the WWF tag team scene wasn't all that as it was before. The Demolition lost their toughness and edge when RW came. Never had a proper feud with the Road Warriors. Must was only on live events. That SS match was weird. Ultimate Warrior had no proper feud with anyone and he was the champion. I found it weird him teaming with them and no Demolition member was feuding with UW. Shame that Demolition after a good run will never be in the Hall of Famers with them in a law suit against WWE. Their longest reign as tag champions was purposely ended because of the law suit by the weak New Day!

Agreed. After Hogan & Warrior, Demolition was probably the most over act in WWF at the time. Just watch & listen to their crowd reaction at WM 6. It made no sense to turn them heel immediately after WM. Ax getting sick didn’t help, but the fans may have accepted Crush more if WWF kept Demolition as babyfaces w/Ax managing the team until he could come back. WWF didn’t need to immediately put LOD into a rivalry with Demolition, they should have instead pushed both teams as babyfaces for awhile before having them feud with each other.

And as a teenager back then, Demolition was and will always be Vince McMahon’s “Road Warriors”, until he could get the real thing. Also loved The Masked Superstar character. I remember a match between MS and Hulk Hogan shortly after Hulk won the belt. At the end of the match when Hogan started Hulking up and no selling, Masked Superstar looked disgusted and left the ring to be counted out. Demolition and the Road Warriors are similar in that they took the inspiration from the Mel Gibson movie Mad Max 2:The Road Warrior. Demolition took their inspiration from the villainous leader Lord Humungus while the Road Warriors took theirs from Wez, Humungus' lieutenant and right hand man. From there they each became their own thing organically. As has been said RW were legitimate brawling ass kickers while Demolition were polished wrestlers. I learned on this podcast how rich of wrestling history Bill Eadie has, very much an unsung legend. It is disappointing that Vince casted them aside once he could finally land the Road Warriors. But I think putting Ultimate Warrior in their feud did the rivalry no favors. Plus Demolition was in flux because Bill Eadie was slowly being relieved of his spot in the shape of Crush. That all being said, if anyone was a ripoff of the RW the Powers of Pain were, only they were muscled up in Vince MCMahon's vision.

Like the Misfits (not the real life band) were to Jem And The Holograms in the erappy 1980s cartoon. Ok let me tell you how an NWA fan looked at Demolition. We looked at them as knock offs of the Road Warriors for mainly 2 reasons. Both almost always had the tag team belts, being pushed hard. Both started their matches identical. Come into the ring and blitzkrieg their opponents and win fast. Sure the face paint didn't help to make the teams different. They sounded similar on the mic. The length of the spikes didn't make them different. Vince knew he only needed to change it enough to make it different. They were very similar.

@@ShadowAngel1860 But by the end of the 1980s there were teams bigger than them in WCW (Skyscrapers) and body guys just as physical as them, but also much better wrestlers (Steiners, Doom, etc). The 1983 gimmick didn't work in 1990. In WWF, how the hell could anyone believe they could overpower the Natural Disasters. Darsow and Eadie were actually good wresters, so could adapt to the opponents. Road Warriors couldn't. Remove them being bigger and stronger then everyone else and there was nothing there. That's why each return they did in the 1990s and early 2000s were worse and worse.
