Bruce Prichard on The End of nWo in WWF

Спорт

Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard is an audio podcast that discusses topics, events, wrestlers and memorable moments through the lens of former WWE executive Bruce Prichard co-hosted by Conrad Thompson.
The show was launched in August 2016 on MLW Radio. The episodes typically range from 2 hours to 4 hours in length, and include discussions about previous WWE pay-per-views and former WWE wrestlers.
When Scott Hall and Kevin Nash jumped to WCW creating the nWo, they changed the face of wrestling forever, they strapped a rocket to WCW, and sent the WWE reeling, so what went wrong when they invaded the WWE? In this clip from award winning podcast Something to Wrestle, Bruce Prichard breaks it down.

They didn't really botch anything. Why didn't the nWo work? Because first Nash injured himself, the fans turned Hogan face, and then Hall gets fired. How do you work with that? All you have left is Nash who can't wrestle, gets better, then tears his quad his first night back in the ring. They try to throw in Pac, HBK, Booker and Big Show with an injured Nash, and no one wants that.

yep. The whole nWo as everybody remembers it is Hall, Nash and Hogan. And then they added a bunch of other guys after that which made no difference to the group or benefited them in anyway shape or form. Just a bunch of guys clinging onto something.

The problem with the nWo was that Hogan was getting more pops from the crowd than anybody because they we're happy to see him back. Nash was hurt all the time, Hall had too many problems, Xpac was just another name in the nWO, HBK wasn't ready to perform again and the whole group just wasn't going to work out.

They should have had Hall and Nash return as Razor and Diesel and like you said slowly hint at then coming together with Hogan to reform the NWO. It was stupid and contrived for them to come together right off the bat. But that was WWE writing in 2002. Stupid and contrived. Also, having Hogan come back separate would have solved the problem of the fans turning him face. The fans and Hogan could have had their moment of welcoming him back and cheering the shit out of him. Then a major heel turn and teaming up with Hall and Nash again would have gotten so much heat and the Nwo could have gotten so much momentum again.

That made no sense though. Literally the whole entire POINT of the nWo (even though threats of a lawsuit forced them to downplay it) was that they were WWF stars that Vince had personally sent down south to invade/infiltrate WCW and destroy them from the inside out, bringing the Monday Night War straight to them and ratcheting it up to 11. THATS WHAT THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE! That's why all the members at first were former WWF superstars and why the secret "third member" was revealed to be none other than Hulk Hogan. Hogan literally WAS World Wrestling Federation! He was not only a WWF superstar, he was _THE_ WWF superstar. So who better to lead this invasion of WCW by insurgents sent by the WWF? And even beyond Hall, Nash, and Hogan, the initial members who joined them were folks who were former WWF superstars and were best known for their tenure there. Ted DiBiase, Rick Rude, Syxx (aka The 1-2-3 Kid aka X-Pac), Vincent (aka Virgil, DiBiase's manservant in WWF during the peak Hulkamania years), Randy Savage & Miss Elizabeth, Michael Wallstreet (aka IRS in WWF), Big Bubba Rogers (aka Big Boss Man in WWF), "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig, Rick Rude, Brian Adams (aka Crush/Kona Crush in WWF), The Disciple (better known for his WWF run as Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake...and also for being Hogan's biggest groupie/ bottom bitch/coattails-rider), Jeff Jarrett (an argument can be made for him being a WWF guy), and of course Bret Hart. So it doesnt logically follow for Vince McManon to FINALLY WIN the Monday Night War by beating WCW and ECW to death and then buying up what was left of them and absorbing it into the growing (and now publicly traded) WWF conglomerate, leaving WWF as the last remaining TRULY major league pro wrestling organization in the WORLD, a victory that was made possible in no small part by the nWo, the invaders/insurgents/saboteurs that they had sent to help dismantle WCW from within, and then - rather than bring the nWo boys back home to celebrate their victory and congratulate & reward them on a successful mission and job well done - he proceeds to bring them into the WWF (HIS ABSOLUTE BABY, HIS MOST CHERISHED CREATION) while acting as if they never had anything to do with WWF before, and orders them to systematically destroy WWF from within the same way they did to WCW for no discernible reason. Ridiculous. If anything, Hall, Nash, and Hogan should have come back to the WWF as the nWo, celebrate a mission accomplished at long last, and promptly disband the group as they had successfully done precisely what the group was explicitly created to do. Hogan goes back to being his old self (to a degree) now that he's back home in the WWF, and Hall and Nash do the only logical thing and join D-Generation X alongside their fellow Kilq-mates HHH and Shawn Michaels and X-Pac (once the latter two finally made their WWF/WWE returns shortly after Wrestlemania X-8, that is). And then you go from there. I'm sorry, but that's the best thing they could have done. Because you cant do nWo in the WWF! And why? Because that flies in the face of the nWo's central reason for existing in the first place!

  • @sampiHBK00
    @sampiHBK00 Жыл бұрын

Nash has said that the original plan for WM was for Hall to beat Austin (with help from Nash) and then the Rock beats Hogan, but the NWO beats down Rock after the match. Then WM ends with the NWO standing tall over a beaten up Rock. I liked Hogan’s face turn, but I would have loved to see the original NWO & Hollywood Hogan have a longer run in WWE before Hogan turned face.

It would have been awesome for the original NWO Hall, Nash, and Hogan to split up like they did because of the popularity of Hogan but instead have HHH, HBK, and X Pac to help Hall and Nash beat down Hogan and form a clique/NWO/DX stable and have that group feud with Hogan, Austin, Rock, and pretty much everybody else for at least a year. That would have kept Hall in check to be with his buddies once again on the road, maybe Nash doesn’t get hurt, HBK starts wrestling again. It could have been great.

It was already WWE at that point. In my opinion, WWE died the day the got the F out. Anything that says WWF, i can watch and enjoy. Once hunter became head of creative with his wife, and controlled his own push, the show became unwatchable, even to a KLIQ fan like myself. It is kinda like 2000 wcw, when i see that new logo, i know its probably shit. When i see WWE, i know it isnt very good. That isnt to say that everything they did after they made the transition was bad, it wasnt. Just the overall product wasnt very good and it started with the botched invasion.

I don't think they thought that Hulk Hogan would have been over with the fans as much as he was. It was a last-minute change to turn Hogan baby face at WrestleMania because of the receptions he was getting from the crowd. I think NWO definitely still could have worked if Scott Hall didn't get fired and Nash tearing quad. The Original Wolfpac with Big Show would have worked. Booker T should of never been in the NWO.

Hogan getting pops doomed the nWo but WWE was so desperate to keep business afloat that they jumped right on the face turn. They could have slow played it by hinting that Hogan's heart wasn't 100% into it and Nash and Hall were pushing him along. Then when they try to push Hogan to put the death blow on a big name like Rock or Austin, he refuses and they attack him and kick him out.

that possibly could have worked. When all seems dire, Vince is about to lose his company to Ric Flair (WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooo) suddenly the nwo arrive and start running rough-shod... seeing that he can exploit the situation he chicken-shit heels his way around the legalese always giving the nwo an advantage and punishing other wrestlers for similar infractions. i.e. stuff like coming up with excuses as to why he can't eject the nwo from the arena, while having police escort other wrestlers off premise. claiming he can't suspend nwo guys because the 'attacks' took place 'outside a sanctioned match' or outside of 'working hours', while suspending wrestlers for various other things to give nwo an advantage. Basically, have the nwo operate as a heel faction, but Vince is not directly involved as their 'leader' but is going above and beyond to 'help them' to get back at flair/shane/Stef etc.

WWE never got what the nWo was! The nWo wasn’t just a stable. The nWo was an entity built by ex-WWF guys, that wanted to take a over a company (WCW) and start their own company with their roster. Therefore it could never be just 3 guys, or even 5, or even 7. You wouldn’t be able to reign in a company with only 3 or 7 guys. That’s why the nWo had a big roster! The main angle was to have an entire roster split in two, nWo and WCW and have them wrestling each other for supremacy and for the show’s control! So when I hear these WWF guys like Bruce Prichard, and even Vince, talking about how the nWo shouldn’t have been the way it was etc… It really gives me the whole clue on why the nWo failed in WWE. Just like WCW didn’t know what to do with a Bret Hart, WWE didn’t have a clue on what to do with the nWo.

I was there the day the NWO ended with Vinces opening RAW promo & that is where the dreaded concept of " The General Manager " was created & Bischoff debuted. *Fun Fact* the main event to that RAW was RVD & Flair vs Undertaker & Lesnar. Flair was a bump machine that night & the finish involved Brock turning on Taker starting their legendary fued. Also it was the first time ever over many months since his debut that Brock himself actually spoke. - Now NWO didnt work from WWE from the get go. First, Kevin Trash was always hurt & couldnt work. Hall was still a fall down drunk & couldnt hack even his super light travel schedule. And of course they turned Hogan face too soon for the group to have legs. Next then introduce Booker effin T in the NWO which was absolutely preposterous knowing his WCW history. Then with HBK coming in as NWO it just make the whole thing a total joke. Waltman & Big Show were great additions to the WWE NWO but it was far little too late. Also to debut Bischoff AFTER The entire NWO angle was completed was totally perplexing timing as why not bring him in early as the groups defacto figurehead as he was prior in WCW. Vince was talking about injecting poison & there is no greater poison than Eric Bischoff.

Hall had actually gotten sober before they were brought in. He got back into wrestling form and was ready. It wasn't until the finish for Mania was changed last minute that hurt him and he slipped. To say he was "still a fall down drunk" is not correct.

They should have kept them away from actual in-ring matches for a while ... and just had them screwing around back stage and messing with other matches and individuals ... The story was Vince seeing them as a 'poison' ... so it would have made more sense to use them as annoying pests ... each week create some funny and cool videos of them destroying stuff, or jumping other wrestlers just to beat them up ...

You're an idiot. Hall wasn't drinking during his time back in the WWE in 2002. He was taking medicine that would make him sick if he drank alcohol. WWE lied to him and promised him on his contract that he would work 10 days a month because he had sole custody of his two kids but he ended up having to work 20 days. The WWE also told him he'd be going over at Wrestlemania and work a longer program with Austin but they lied again and obviously he lost and the program ended at Wrestlemania. WWE didn't treat Hall right in 2002. He was a known alcoholic and they had him work with a dude whose gimmick is a beer drinker. The WWE were major assholes.

The nWo was dead Hogan was jumped and turned face after Wrestlemania. Yes Nash getting hurt and Hall's problems would have killed it but booked a different way where Vince doesn't worry about the cheers and lets Hogan stay heel and the frontman and he's using his henchmen even if they were different people to go after Austin and the Rock and anyone else getting cheered they could have gotten a solid year or 2 out of it. That said the Hogan nWo bit had long ago staled in WCW so it couldn't be him dominating the show again but I would argue why did he go nWo heel in 96? People had had enough of the red and yellow. His run in WWF\E was never the same either. Just nostalgia matches but nothing serious. He and the nWo died the same night.
